RESUMO

This is a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controled, parallel study of the use of dried horse chestnut extract (Venostasin Retard) inchronic venous insufficiency of the limbs. Fifty-one patients were enrolled, divided in two groups, active (N=25) and placebo (N=26), and received treatment fortwenty days. The following parameters were evaluated: telangiectasy, perimaleolar oedema, disestesy vascular congestion, blood ebling, ocre dermatitis, ulceration, burning, lead-footfeeling, effort incapacity, and others like pains or itching. Almost all these parameters showed a statistically significant improvement or a strong trend of improvement in the active group, except telangiectasy, perimaleolar oedema and ulceration. Adverse effects were unfrecquent and mild. In conclusion, the dried horse chestnut extract (Venostasin Retard) was efficaciuos regarding to the treatment of chronic venous insuciency of the limbs, and presented hight levels of safety and tolerance
