RESUMO

Background: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder [ADHD] is one of the most common mental diseases in children. Fatty acids are important components of nerve cell myelin. Essential fatty acid deficiency leads to behavioral abnormalities similar to nervous disorders, such as ADHD. The purpose of this study was to determine the composition of fatty acids in plasma phospholipids and whole erythrocyte in the ADHD boys


Methods: This is a case-control study in which 36 boys with ADHD and 37 boys without ADHD -aged 6-12 years- were participated. ADHD children were diagnosed with clinical diagnosis and psychiatric questionnaires by a psychiatrist. Then fatty acids of plasma phospholipids and whole erythrocyte were extracted


Results: The mean content of sum of saturated fatty acids [P=0.004] and arachidonic acid [P<0.001] of plasma phospholipids were significantly lower and mean concentrations of oleic acid [P<0.001] and sum of monoenes [P<0.001] were significantly higher in the ADHD group compared to the control one. However in the total RBC, the mean concentrations of stearic acid [P=0.003], arachidonic acid [P=0.04] and alpha-linolenic [P=0.02] acid were significantly lower and the mean content of linoleic acid [P=0.01] was significantly higher in the ADHD group compared to the control one


Conclusion: Fatty acid composition of plasma phospholipids and RBC in the ADHD children differed from that of the non-ADHD children

RESUMO

Introduction and Aims: toxoplasmosis is a usual infection caused by the intracellular protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Primary infections during pregnancy are usually asymptomatic for the pregnant woman but can cause severe neonatal problems. This study designed to determine seroprevalence of IgG and IgM and its related factors among first trimester pregnant women referring to health centers of Razavi Khorasan Province, Iran


Materials and Methods: in this cross sectional study 786 serum samples were collected from pregnant women aged from 15 to 46 years in Khorasan Razavi province, during 2013-2014. The seroprevalence IgG and IgM antibodies were measured by using of commercial kit in both urban and rural areas and data were analyzed using the SPSS v.19


Results: the seroprevalence of IgG antibodies to T. gondii was 31.17% while IgM seroprevalence was 5.47% and 1.65% were positive for both IgG and IgM antibodies. The seroprevalence of T. gondii is directly proportional to the age, but inversely proportional to education and there was not any significant difference between urban and rural areas


Conclusion: sero-prevalence of T. gondii-specific antibodies is nearly high among pregnant women in Razavi-Khorasan province with a significant ratio of women at risk of T. gondii infections. Screening of T. gondii infections during antenatal care should be considered in this area as the chief strategy to diminish congenital toxoplasmosis

RESUMO

Studies have shown different types of RAS mutations in human bladder tumors with a wide range of mutation frequencies in different patient populations. This study aimed to assess the frequency of specific-point mutations in the RAS gene family of a group of Iranian patients with bladder cancer. We examined the tumor specimens of 35 consecutive patients with transitional cell carcinoma. The DNA samples were evaluated for the occurrence of HRAS, KRAS, and NRAS activation using a polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism technique. None of the patients had mutations in the RAS gene family "hot spots" including codons 12, 13, and 61. We failed to find RAS mutations in our bladder tumor samples. These observations may reflect the involvement of different etiological factors in the induction of bladder tumor of which RAS mutation might not be present in all populations
