RESUMO

This paper aims to assess the prenatal breastfeeding intention and its predictors in Odisha, a state in India. Data were collected from 218 rural pregnant women of Angul district of Odisha, India in 2012. About 33% of the women lacked the intention to exclusively breastfeed their babies for 6 months. Prelacteal feeding was intended by one-third of the women while 61.5% of the women intended to feed water during the first 6 months of birth. Women of an older age [odds ratio (OR) = 1.30; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.09-1.55], with more education (OR = 1.14; 95% CI = 1.08-1.32), belonging to lower castes [other backward caste (OBC)-OR = 21.33; 95% CI = 4.29-106.0, scheduled caste (SC)-OR = 22.77; 95% CI = 2.47-199.1, scheduled tribe (ST)-OR = 26.16; 95% CI = 4.10-174.8), and lesser number of living sons (OR = 0.59; 95% CI = 0.22-0.94) were more likely to have a higher intention for optimal breastfeeding than those of a lower age, with less education, belonging to a higher caste, and with more number of living sons. Awareness generation programs need to be strengthened to educate pregnant women with appropriate and recommended breastfeeding guidelines to establish optimal breastfeeding practices.

RESUMO

Effects of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) both alone or in combination on the binding of LH and FSH on isolated granulosa cells were studied. Granulosa cells isolated from proestrous rats were incubated (in vitro) with lead acetate and/or cadmium acetate (0.03 microM of Pb or Cd) for 1 hr. LH binding was dropped to 84% in Pb treated cells, 72.5% in Cd treated cells and 74.8% in combined metal treated cells compared to control. FSH binding dropped to 85.5% in Pb treated cells, 71.16% in Cd treated cells and 72.5% in combined metal treated cells compared to control. Activity of 17beta Hydroxy Steroid Dehydrogenase (17betaHSDH), a key steroidogenic enzyme was reduced by 52% in Cd and 37% in combined metal exposed cells whereas Pb exposed cells showed 31% reduction in the enzyme activity. Pretreatment with SH groups protectants (glutathione [GSH], dithiothretol [DTT]) and zinc caused an ameriolation in enzyme activity whereas Zn pretreatment showed an increase in gonadotropin binding in metal exposed cells. These results suggest that both Pb and Cd can cause a reduction in LH and FSH binding, which significantly alters steroid production in vitro and exerts a direct influence on granulosa cell function.

RESUMO

We report two patients with obscure GI bleed in whom we performed intra-arterial contrast-enhanced spiral CT scan of abdomen with the angiography catheter in the superior mesenteric artery (SMA). The technique localized the lesions to the mid jejunum and distal duodenum.

RESUMO

Toxic effect of metal cations on female reproduction and gonadal functions was studied. Adult synchronized female rats were treated intraperitoneally with lead acetate and cadmium acetate separately and in combination (0.025, 0.05 and 0.1 mg/kg body wt) for 15 days. The metabolizing enzymes (17beta-hydroxy steroid oxidoreductase and UDP glucoronyl transferase) activities decreased with increasing dose showing significant change compared to control. Also, significant decrease in cytochrome P450 (CYP450) content was found after the treatment. Displacement of zinc bound to metallothionein was more in cadmium treated rats compared to other groups. In all these parameters, treatment in combination of lead and cadmium showed intermediate results indicating some kind of competition between the two metals. But the histological studies showed that combined treatment caused more cytotoxic effect than cadmium and lead alone. These results indicated that metal cations tested did have a direct inhibitory effect on metabolizing enzyme activities.
