An analytic case-control study was conducted with those patients who suffered from tuberculosis in the «26 of July» District, in Santiago de Cuba, during 1995. 3 controls were chosen per each case, according to sex, age, race and place of residence. No association was found with age, in spite of the fact that it was stratified with other factors. A causal association was observed among respiratory disease history, faulty nutrition and basically nutrition disorders, whereas the relationship existing between tuberculosis family history and heaping was not causal. If the risk factors susceptible to modification were eliminated, the incidence of this disease in the exposed groups and in the population in general would decrease. It was concluded that the risk approach was not applied to tuberculosis carriers, and that it is necessary to do it in every case with respiratory manifestations, as well as to take measures as regards faulty nutrition.
