In 2013, the first dengue fever (DF) outbreak in central China was reported in the central of Henan province, northern temperate regions, although they have been sequentially recorded in Southern China. 106 suspected DF cases were reported and 73 patients were confirmed dengue virus type 3 (DEN-3) infections. 62/392 (15.8%) local health persons showed DEN antibodies positive. To this day Henan is the northernmost province in China which has been reported about outbreak of DF and what is important is that it warns us the endemic range of DF has been expanded geographically in China.

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To evaluate the diagnostic value of serum angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2) level in pancreatic cancer patients.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Serum Ang-2 level was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) in samples from 116 patients with pancreatic cancer, 50 patients with chronic pancreatitis, and 50 normal control subjects.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The serum Ang-2 level in patients with pancreatic cancer [(1539.0 ± 449.3) ng/L] was significantly higher than those in patients with pancreatitis [(1044.6 ± 246.1) ng/L, P < 0.01] and normal control subjects [(1075.6 ± 228.2) ng/L, P < 0.01]. There was no significant difference of serum Ang-2 levels between patients with pancreatitis and normal controls. Pancreatic caner patients with lymph node metastasis had a significantly higher serum Ang-2 level [(1890.1 ± 354.9) ng/L] than those without metastasis [(1212.1 ± 224.2) ng/L, P < 0.01]. The area under ROC curve of serum Ang-2 level for diagnosis of pancreatic cancer was 0.819.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>The serum Ang-2 level can be a useful indicator for diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.</p>

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To explore the anti-atherosclerosis effect of Taizhi'an Capsule (TZA) for providing a theoretical base of its application in preventing coronary heart disease (CHD), by way of observing the effects of TZA and pravastatin (PVT) on vascular endothelial function in senile patients with CHD.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Seventy-eight Senile patients with CHD were randomly divided into the TZA group and the PVT group, 39 in each group. Changes of carotid arterial intima-media thickness (IMT) and brachial arterial endothelium dependent diastolic function (FMD) before and after treatment were observed by non-invasive ultrasound test technique, and levels of serum nitric oxide (NO) and plasma endothelin-1 (ET-1) were determined as well.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>After TAZ treatment, IMT decreased from 1.21 +/- 0.17 mm to 0.91 +/- 0.13 mm, FMD increased from 5.02 +/- 0.58% to 8.97 +/- 0.39%, ET-1 lowered from 95.93 +/- 19.41 ng/L to 49.35 +/- 53.27 ng/L, and NO enhanced from 42.56 +/- 14.12 mumol/L to 69.84 +/- 21.96 mumol/L; after PVT treatment, the corresponding changes were 1.25 +/- 0.21 mm to 0.88 +/- 0.32 mm, 4.90 +/- 0.37% to 8.12 +/- 0.25%, 89.35 +/- 10.02 ng/L to 47.96 +/- 11.05 ng/L and 51.71 +/- 9.39 mumol/L to 72.93 +/- 16.51 mumol/L, all the changes were statistically significant.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>TZA can obviously improve the vascular endothelial function in old patients with CHD, which has the anti-atherosclerosis effect similar to that of PVT.</p>
