RESUMO

Purpose: To investigate the quality of discharge teaching, readiness for hospital discharge (RHD), and post-discharge outcomes (PDO) of cataract patients in a day ward and to explore the relationships among these three variables. Methods: This cross-sectional study used an opportunistic sample from the ophthalmic day ward in a general hospital in Sichuan province, China. Data were collected using four questionnaires. Results: The total average score on the Quality of Discharge Teaching Scale was 192.95, and the dimension with the lowest score was “guidance obtained practically.” The total average score on the Readiness for Hospital Discharge Scale was 175.51, and the dimension with the lowest score was “knowledge of disease.” The total average score on the Post-Discharge Outcome Questionnaire was 77.08, and the four dimensions with the lowest scores were “compliance behaviors,” “avoiding excessive use of eye,” “avoiding strenuous exercise,” and “regular check-up.” Pearson correlation coefficients indicated low to moderate correlations between discharge teaching quality and PDO (0.245, P < 0.01), RHD and PDO (0.271, P < 0.01), and discharge teaching quality and PDO (0.559, P < 0.01). Conclusion: The quality of discharge teaching among cataract patients who underwent day surgery was relatively high, and patient preparation for discharge and PDO were good. However, medical staff should focus more attention on patients' individualized needs for discharge teaching while emphasizing the importance of compliance behavior.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to examine hepatitis B virus (HBV) subgenotypes and mutations in enhancer II, basal core promoter, and precore regions of HBV in relation to risks of liver cirrhosis (LC) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in Southeast China. A case-control study was performed, including chronic hepatitis B (CHB; n=125), LC (n=120), and HCC (n=136). HBV was genotyped by multiplex polymerase chain reaction and subgenotyped by restriction fragment length polymorphism. HBV mutations were measured by DNA sequencing. HBV genotype C (68.2%) predominated and genotype B (30.2%) was the second most common. Of these, C2 (67.5%) was the most prevalent subgenotype, and B2 (30.2%) ranked second. Thirteen mutations with a frequency >5% were detected. Seven mutation patterns (C1653T, G1719T, G1730C, T1753C, A1762T, G1764A, and G1799C) were associated with C2, and four patterns (C1810T, A1846T, G1862T, and G1896A) were associated with B2. Six patterns (C1653T, G1730C, T1753C, A1762T, G1764A, and G1799C) were obviously associated with LC, and 10 patterns (C1653T, G1730C, T1753C, A1762T, G1764A, G1799C, C1810T, A1846T, G1862T, and G1896A) were significantly associated with HCC compared with CHB. Four patterns (C1810T, A1846T, G1862T, and G1896A) were significantly associated with HCC compared with LC. Multivariate regression analyses showed that HBV subgenotype C2 and C2-associated mutation patterns (C1653T, T1753C, A1762T, and G1764A) were independent risk factors for LC when CHB was the control, and that B2-associated mutation patterns (C1810T, A1846T, G1862T, and G1896A) were independent risk factors for HCC when LC was the control.

RESUMO

Electrophoretic studies were carried out on isozymes of 3 populations of Anopheles minimus collected from Guangxi and Yunnan Provinces of the People's Republic of China in 1993. Eight proteins were analyzed by 5% polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The most variable population, Y-F, was highly polymorphic at 14 of 20 loci (P=0.700) with an average heterozygosity H of 0.340. P values of 0.500 and 0.700, and H values of 0.220 and 0.210 were obtained for each from 'Guangxi-Lab' (GX-L) and 'Yunnan-Lab' (Y-L), respectively. Nei's genetic distances (D) between Y-L and GX-L, Y-F and GX-L, and Y-F and Y-L were 0.1131, 0.1946 and 0.1069, respectively. These results suggest that GX-L is distant from the 2 other populations, Y-L and Y-F, and that this genetic differentiation between the 2 populations of Yunnan and Guangxi Provinces corresponds to the forms A and B, which were morphologically classified by Xu et al (unpublished).
