new approach to develop a vaccine against capripox infection in sheep and goats using a new strain of sheep pox virus in Iran

This report describes the preparation of a safe and immunogenic single vaccine against capripox disease in sheep and goats using two different types of cells [primary lamb kidney and vero, a bovine turbinate cell line]. This used the 0240 pox strain isolated from sheep during an outbreak. The prepared vaccine was administered subcutaneously and induced complete protection against an experimental sheep and goat pox challenge virus. For the final evaluation, the efficacy of the prepared vaccine was used in a field trial under the supervision of veterinary clinicians. This vaccine was proved to be more efficacious than the routine vaccines that are currently produced

[Orbital echinococcosis with two different features; hydatid and alveolar cysts]

To present two patients with hydatid and alveolar cysts of the orbit and to present their clinical, imaging, pathologic and therapeutic features. Two young children from rural areas were referred for progressive proptosis. Imaging showed intraorbital cysts. They were operated on with a clinical suspicion of hydatid and alveolar cysts. Pathologic evaluation confirmed the diagnoses in both instances. Clinical findings and imaging before the operation help the diagnosis of orbital echinococcosis. Knowing the nature of these lesions can prevent surgical complications. Alveolar cysts are much more invasive than hydatid cysts and their treatment is more difficult

[Adie's tonic pupil following chicken pox]

To report a case of Adie's tonic pupil following chicken pox. A 7-year-old girl with history of chicken pox manifesting one week ago presented with loss of near and far vision in her right eye. The right pupil was larger than the left in room light and abnormal iris configuration was seen with pen light illumination. After instillation of diluted pilocarpine [0.1%] in both eyes, miosis occurred only in the right pupil and a diagnosis of tonic pupil was established. The patient was treated with bifocal glasses which resulted in relief of the visual symptoms. We recommend pupil and refractive evaluation in children with chicken pox. Bifocal glasses can help reduce symptoms of tonic pupil until recovery of the disease

[Comparison of a local made temporary cement [P-cem], with an imported brand [Temp Bond] using ISO 3107 criteria]

The local made eugenol-free temporary cement [P-cem] has been used by considerable number of Iranian dentists. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the physical properties of this cement and compare it with Temp Bond of Switzerland using ISO 3107 criteria. In this laboratory investigation we used 6 samples of each cement type, in order to test and determine the average setting time, compressive strength, film thickness, as well as solubility and disintegration rate according to ISO 3107 standards. After conducting data analysis, Student T-test was used for detection of significance level. The average setting time was 4.57 and 4.03 for P-cem and Temp Bond respectively. The average compressive strength for P-cem was 5.7 Mpa and 9.6 Mpa for Temp Bond. The average film thickness for P-cem was 20.16 micro m and 5.83 micro m for Temp Bond. The 24-hour solubility and disintegration rate for P-cem was 1.03% and 0.9% for Temp Bond. Analysis of data showed significant statistical difference between the two cements with regards to setting time, compressive strength and film thickness [P<0.001]. However, there was no significant difference between the two cements in relation to solubility and disintegration rate, although the values for both cements were within the standard range according to specifications of ISO 3107. Based on the findings of this study, both cements can provide valuable clinical applications, although biocompatibility test for P-cem is highly recommendable
