The hypoglycemic effect of ethanolic extract of Bougainvillea spectabilis was investigated on glucose loaded and streptozotocin induced diabetic rats. The blood glucose levels were measured at 0, 1,2 and 3 hrs after the treatment. The ethanolic extract of B. spectabilis [300 mg/kg] reduced the blood glucose of normal rat from 85.33 +/- 1.79 to 65.17 +/- 3.67 mg/dl, 3 hrs after oral administration of the extract [P<0.001]. It also significantly lowered blood glucose level in streptozotocin induced diabetic rat from 330.67 +/- 3.27 to 132.17 +/- 4.49 mg/dl, 3 hrs after oral administration of the extract [p<0.001]. Anti-inflammatory activity of the ethanolic extract of the aerial parts of Coldenia procumbens Linn. was studied in wister rats using the carrageenan induced left hind paw edema, carrageenan induced pleurisy and cotton pellet induced granuloma model. The ethanolic extract [150 mg/kg, p.o.,] produced the inhibition of carrageenan induced rat paw edema. It also showed an inhibitory effect on leukocyte migration and a reduction on the pleural exudates as well as reduction on the granuloma weight in the cotton pellet granuloma method.
