RESUMO
A simple and rapid method for dosage calculation in patients with renal impairment by the aid of computer is described. This method is based on the linear relationship between creatinine clearance [ml/min] and the constant renal elimination rate [Km]. This good correlation between creatinine clearance and creatinine concentration allows the direct prediction of drug dosage from estimation of serum creatinine concentration. In this paper we can calculated drug and creatinine clearance [ml/min] for some important drugs like antibiotics, antihypertensive and hypoglycemic drugs and can determine the drug dosage for patients suffering from renal insufficiency or renal failure

A therapeutic carbamazepine [CBZ] monitoring was carried on 8 pregnant epileptic patients. CBZ serum concentration was measured by a gas liquid chromatographic technique. Pregnancy appear to be associated with an increased requirement for CBZ dose in order to maintain serum CBZ concentration required to achieve seizure control. Thus routine therapeutic CBZ monitoring is essential during pregnancy

The therapeutic effect of orally administered zinc sulphate was evaluated in 16 patients with acrodermatitis enteropathica [AE]. Zinc serum levels in these patients and apparently healthy close relatives to patients [the control group] were estimated by atomic absorption spectrophotometric technique. The present study was found a low zinc serum levels in all patients with AE compared to the control group [p<0.001]. Oral zinc sulphate therapy resulted in rapid and complete clinical response. The study concluded that zinc therapy could be used as a diagnostic test as the basic treatment of AE

The effect of ranitidine on the steady state concentration of phenytoin was studied in six epileptic patients. Serum phenytoin concentration before and after the administration of 150 mg ranitidine twice daily for two days was measured by radioimmunoassay. The present study found that ranitidine had no significant effect [P>0.l] on phenytoin steady state concentration We, therefore, suggest using ranitidine in preference to cimetidine in patients who need H2 receptor blockers and who are concurrently on phenytoin for their epilepsy

A simple technique, using solvent extraction and thin - layer chromatography for the detection and separation of a number of commonly prescribed drugs which may also be taken in overdose was studied. It has been found that this method was able to detect and separate many drugs, and this can be achieved in a very short period [less than 1 hr.], which makes this method very valuable in checking compliance and drug overdose in clinical practice
