RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to analyze the smoking prevalence among dental students and to assess the need for promoting tobacco education and intervention by exploring their knowledge about smoking related risk factors. The study also examined the attitudes and practices of the students toward tobacco consumption, and their responsibilities toward the community. METHODS: In total, 53 male students participated in the study (21 juniors and 32 seniors). The training program was divided into three modules, and the questionnaire was administered before and after the counseling sessions, which provided the comparative data on the students' views about smoking cessation. RESULTS: The most commonly practiced mode of tobacco consumption was found to be cigarette smoking (90.6%), while a few consumed Gutkha (9.4%). All the junior students (100%) reported to have been benefitted by the counseling program, while 68.8% of the students from the senior group reported the same. Bivariate statistical analysis was conducted using the Pearson's chi-square test for testing the difference across the age groups. P-values less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant. CONCLUSION: Curbing tobacco influence on dental students in their initial days can ensure a smoke-free life for them, as well as prevents them from feeling embarrassed or experiencing a lack of confidence while seeing their patients. Thus, tobacco education and intervention programs can motivate the students and increase their potential to be credible advisors regarding smoking cessation.

RESUMO

Context: Overdentures are the choice of treatment for most of them, but the only snag is its cost. In India, the rural areas are still deprived of quality treatment. This manuscript is showcasing a study, which is a cheaper, but effective way to provide the best to the patient. Aims: The aim of this study was to develop a custom made system, which can be used as an alternative treatment for the management of patients who need overdentures. The primary objective of this study was to provide a cost-effective attachment with the best functional efficacy. Materials and Methods: The semi-precision attachments were made by using the conventional technique of preparation of post space. The patterns were prepared by using the pattern resin material and the rest of the male and female attachments were fabricated by using innovative methods fulfilling the criteria. Results: The attachments were successfully used in patients with remarkably good function and comfort. Conclusion: It was a successful attempt to provide the specialized treatment in affordable cost. There is a need of innovative work to make the sophisticated systems more economical and readily available.

RESUMO

Since 1987, 560 patients have been treated in our department for carcinoma of thyroid with radioactive Iodine-131. Recently, we have come across a patient with bilateral pulmonary concentration of Iodine-131, that is visualised on Iodine-131 whole body scintiscan, whereas chest radiogram was negative. Respectively, the files of 560 patients of carcinoma of thyroid were analysed. It is found, out of 560 patients treated, 16 patients, had pulmonary concentration of Iodine-131. The chest radiogram was normal in six out of these 16 patients. Details of both chest radiogram and scintiscans are presented in this study.
