RESUMO

Background and Objectives: Opportunistic mycotic infection in pre-existing lung diseases like tuberculosis, lung abscess, COPD are overlooked by chest physicians due to the paucity of mycological investigation facilities. Methods : one hundred and fifty sputum samples were studied for opportunistic mycotic infections from inpatients of pulmonary disease in a tertiary care hospital. Sputum were subjected to Gram’s staining and culture on SDA with Chloramphenicol. Results: 99 fungal isolates were recovered from these samples. Out of these 99 fungal isolates 56(56.57%) were Candida species and 43(43.43%) were of Aspergillus species, of these Candida albicans was the predominant isolate followed by Candida tropicalis. Conclusion: Aspergillus fumigatus was the predominant isolate among Aspergillus species.

RESUMO

Background: The numerous structures within the mediastinum, make it prone for development of various congenital cysts, benign & malignant neoplasms. Cystic lesions and small tumors are asymptomatic in half of the patients and symptoms develop as a result of compression or invasion. These tumors are thus discovered at very late stages, which proves fatal, or, are diagnosed incidently. Methods: We analysed all resected mediastinal tumor specimens received in Department of Pathology & from few other private laboratories in Rural and Urban areas, in & around Bareilly region of North India. In 10 years duration, a total number of 38 cases were examined. Information was collected from detailed gross & microscopic examination and correlated with that of previous studies. Results: Mediastinal tumors occur more in males, with higher frequency of malignant lesions than benign. Predominant tumors are thymomas occurring in middle age group(20-29yrs), followed closely by neurogenic tumors. Conclusion: This study stresses upon the importance of early screening of all patients with suspicion, with help of radiological modalities along with FNAC & mediastinoscopy. Possible causes of increasing incidence of thymomas in children younger than 16yrs age should be further evaluated.

RESUMO

The following case report describes an incidental finding of a pericardial hydatid cyst in a patient who was hospitalised for amoebic liver disease. Although serology was negative for echinococcus, in an endemic area possibility of pericardial hydatid should be considered in differential diagnosis. Considering the potential danger of rupture, with its disastrous consequences, surgery was performed and the cyst successfully enucleated. It is emphasised that multimodality imaging plays an important role in dealing with an asymptomatic but potentially serious lesion when laboratory findings are not helpful
