RESUMO
Se realizó un estudio descriptivo, transversal y retrospectivo para determinar las causas de muerte y los motivos por los cuales los pacientes con cáncer en estadio terminal, fallecen en los centros hospitalarios, a fin de disminuir el índice de mortalidad en estas instituciones, que específicamente en el Hospital Provincial Dr Joaquín Castillo Duany de Santiago de Cuba resultó ser de 66,3 por ciento en el 2008; mejorar la calidad de su atención médica, comparar la mortalidad en el hospital con la del área de salud y precisar las razones que obligaron a estos pacientes a concurrir a la unidad asistencial en la fase final de su enfermedad, cuando debieron permanecer en sus hogares, atendidos por el equipo de salud en la comunidad. Entre las principales causas de muerte figuraron la bronconeumonía y la insuficiencia multiorgánica
A descriptive, cross-sectional and retrospective study was carried out to determine the causes of death and the reasons why patients with end-stage cancer die in hospitals, in order to reduce the mortality rate in these institutions, which specifically in the Dr Joaquín Castillo Duany Provincial Hospital of Santiago de Cuba was found to be 66,3 per cent in 2008, to improve quality of health care, to compare the hospital mortality with that of the health area, and to specify the reasons that forced these patients to attend the care unit at the terminal stage of their illness, when they should stay in their homes, served by the health team in the community. Among the leading causes of death were bronchopneumonia and multiple organ failure
