RESUMO

Laboratory scale experiments were performed to evaluate the feasibility of biofilters for the removal of H[2]S from wastewater treatment plant waste air. The effects of changes in air flow rate and contaminant concentration on biofilter performance treating H[2]S odours were also assessed. Compost was used as media in biofilter. The study was carried out in six different phases, by increasing H[2]S concentrations gradually. In the first phase only humidified air was supplied to acclimatize and develop the biofilm, within the biofilter conditions. In the second phase, inlet H[2]S concentration was kept up to 10 ppm with the humidified air, H-[2]S removal efficiency was very high around 98%. It was concluded that the biofilter, used in the study, was more efficient [>95% removal efficiency] for low contaminant concentrations [up to 30 ppm]. However, as the concentration of H[2]S was increased to 50 ppm the removal efficiency decreased to 85%. The study results showed that biofilter could withstand longer starvation period and required less time to recover to its full efficiency. The effect of operating parameter such as moisture content was also assessed. The study revealed that the compost biofilter may be successfully adopted for various industrial operations where a reduction in emissions of H[2]S is required

RESUMO

To study the consequences of a medical emergency among Emergency Room patients, at a teaching hospital in Karachi, Pakistan. Design: A questionnaire-based survey Settings: Emergency Room of Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi, Pakistan. Main outcome measures: Consequences of a medical emergency in terms of impact on employment, financial position, family life, social life, recreational life, self-confidence and psyche. A hundred patients were surveyed. Emergency Room patients feel that they will not have a major impact on their job or employment, as a result of the medical emergency but it will have adverse financial consequences. The respondents in our study perceive the consequence of the medical emergency to have a variable impact on their family life, social life, recreation life and self-confidence. It is important to note with concern that a major impact on "Psyche" is expected by the emergency room patients, as a result of a medical emergency We have documented the consequences of a medical emergency among Emergency Room patients, with implications for medical practice and policy makers on health

RESUMO

To identify the Leishmania species being responsible for cutaneous leishmaniasis in Multan. Parasites were isolated from clinically and parasitologically confirmed lesions of cutaneous leishmaniasis from 30 patients by fine needle aspiration [FNA]. The bioptical materials were then cultured in Evans Tobie's medium and parasites isolated were identified by isoenzyme electrophoresis technique. Successful Leishmania isolates were obtained from 16 patients. All strains were identified by biochemical techniques as belonging to Leishmania tropica zimodeme MON7 variant PGD. The causative species was identified as Leishmania tropica
