RESUMO

Introduction: The detail understanding about discrepancy in anatomy of glenoid cavity like different shape, sizeand dimensions are important for orthopaedicians and prosthetic designers. Studies concerning glenoidmorphometry among south Indians are scarce. Present study aims at obtaining anthropometric data of glenoidcavity in south Indian scapulae.Materials and Methods: A total of 72 dry adult unpaired scapulae of unknown age and sex were used in the study.Shape and diameters of glenoid fossa in each scapula were recorded and analysed statistically. Results: The average vertical diameter of glenoid fossa was 37.1mm on right side and 37.3mm on left side. Theaverage transverse I and II diameter was 23.3mm and 17.4mm on right side, 23.3mm and 17.7mm on the left side. The average spino-glenoid depth was 16.9 and 16.3mm on right and left side. The average Coraco-glenoiddistance was 25.1mm on both sides. The average acromio-glenoid distance was 32.2 and 32.6mm on right andleft side. Glenoid index was 63.2% on the right side and 62.4% on the left side. Conclusion: The findings of this study would assist to design proper size of glenoid component to be used in totalshoulder arthroplasty among south Indians

RESUMO

Context: Ayurveda propounds that diseases manifest from imbalance of doshas. There, have been attempts to indicate biochemical basis of constitutional types described in Ayurveda. Aims: The study was intended to assess the association of constitutional types (Prakriti) with cardiovascular risk factors, infl ammatory markers and insulin resistance in subjects with coronary artery disease (CAD). Settings and Design: Hospital based cross sectional study. Materials and Methods: Three hundred patients with CAD >25 years were studied. Assessment of Prakriti was done by using Ayusoft software. Biochemical parameters, infl ammatory markers (hsCRP, TNF-alpha and IL-6) and insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) were measured. Statistical Analysis: Was done using EPI INFO, version 3.5.3. Results: Mean age of patients was 60.97±12.5 years. Triglyceride, VLDL and LDL was signifi cantly higher (P<0.0001, P<0.0001 and 0.0355, respectively) and HDL cholesterol (P<0.0001) signifi cantly lower in vatta kapha (VK) Prakriti when compared with other constitution type. VK Prakriti was correlated with diabetes mellitus (r=0.169, P=0.003), hypertension (r=0.211, P≤0.0001) and dyslipidemia (r=0.541, P≤0.0001). Infl ammatory markers; IL6, TNF alpha, hsCRP and HOMA IR was highest in VK Prakriti. Infl ammatory markers were correlated positively with both VK and Kapha group. Conclusions: There is strong relation of risk factors (diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia), insulin resistance, and infl ammatory markers with Vata Kapha and Kapha Prakriti.

RESUMO

Betel nut and betel quid chewing are from major etiological factor for oral cancer. They also increase the risk of systemic diseases such as asthma, diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome, myocardial infarction, hypertension, and other cardiovascular diseases. Sixty three patients of oral cancer in our institution during Jan. 2007 to May 2011 were included in our study. This study included 14 cases of lip carcinoma, 41 cases of buccal mucosa carcinoma, 7 cases of tongue carcinoma, and 1 case of carcinoma of upper alveolus. Duration of use of betel quid, pan masala, and gutkha were studied as well as management. All patients in our study have been chewing betel-quid for 6-31 years [mean19.42 years]. All of them quit betel quid and used easily available panmasala and gutkha for 4-13 years [mean 8.28 years]. Nine cases of lip carcinoma, 13 cases of buccal mucosa carcinoma and 3 cases of tongue carcinoma were treated with surgery. Seven cases of lip carcinoma, 30 cases of buccal mucosa carcinoma and 5 cases of tongue carcinoma were treated with post operative or palliative radiotherapy. Betel nut chewing with or without tobacco and lime are proven to be carcinogens in human. Direct relationship between oral cancer and betel quid, gutkha, and panmasala use has been shown in our study. As betel quid, panmasala and gutkha chewing were proven to be carcinogens, a permanent ban on manufacturing and sale of these products should be implemented

RESUMO

Closure of the rhinostomy opening is a major factor for surgical failure in endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy. Silicone tube stent improves surgical outcomes of endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy. We used 1-0 prolene suture wire stent which is a cheaper alternative. A comparative case series analysis study with random patient allocation done in Department of ENT, Head and Neck Surgery, KVG Medical College, Sullia. Endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy [EnDCR] were done in 150 patients who were randomly allocated into 3 groups with 50 patients each. Silicon tube stents were used in group B and prolene wire stents were used in group C. No stents were used in group A and were taken as control. In our study, 90% success in syringing patency was seen in group A, 92% success in syringing patency was seen in group B and 90% success in syringing patency was seen in group C. No significant difference in success rates were recorded in patients where no stent was used when compared with those with groups with silicon or prolene stent used. 1-0 prolene suture wire is commonly available in all operation theaters and is used as a possible substitute for silicon tube stents

RESUMO

Plaster of Paris [POP], thermoplastic splints, and self-adhesive padded aluminium [Denver] splints are the most common splints used to stabilize fractured nasal bones and to support external nasal framework after rhinoplasty. All these splints are efficient but may have disadvantages like being cumbersome, time-consuming, bulky, conspicuous and expensive. K VG Medical College, Department of ENT, Head and Neck Surgery. A comparative study involving 122 cases of nasal splinting done during the study period of 51 months from Jan 2007 to April 2011. 122 cases of nasal bone fractures and rhinoplasties were splinted using POP and Denver splints to stabilize the nasal framework. 15 cases of nondislocated nasal fractures and 16 cases of internal augmentation rhinoplasties were stabilized by Denver splints. 77 cases of displaced nasal fractures and 14 cases of external rhinoplasties were stabilized by POP splints. POP splints give the best stabilsation for nasal bone fractures as well as for rhinoplasties hut are bulky and conspicuous. Denver nasal splints are not bulky and conspicuous but cannot be used for fractures with lacerations and external rhinoplasties

RESUMO

Elongated styloid process causing Eagle's syndrome is a rare clinical entity and the diagnosis is often difficult as result of its vague symptomatology. However, palpation of tonsillar fossa with radiological demonstration of the elongated styloid process confirms the diagnosis. This is a report of a retrospective study conducted at the KVG Medical College, Hospital, Sullia, Karnataka, India where 15 patients who were surgically treated for Eagle's syndrome in the ENT department were retrospectively studied. Fourteen patients became symptom free after surgery within three months of follow up. Tonsillo-styloidectomy is the treatment of choice for Eagle's syndrome with a high success rate

RESUMO

Zoxazolamine paralysis times have been used as a probe to measure the activity of cytochrome P450 1A1 in mice in vivo. The results indicated that male and female mice of the BALB/c and CBA/J strain did not show altered paralysis times if infected with less than 4 worm pairs. Alterations were observed only in animals harboring more than 5 worm pairs, irrespective of sex or strain of mouse being used. The study has extended the findings of other workers showing that mice infected with fewer than 4-5 worm pairs of S. mansoni do not show any alteration in the metabolism of pentobarbital in vivo
