Agnathia of maxilla and zygoma with a comment on first arch syndrome

A case of an infant with severe oro-facial anomalies is presented. The presence of a normal mandible and the left total absence of the maxillary and zygomatic bones on the left side in the present case, support the hypotheses presented by various other workers that the maxillary process doses not arise as a dorsal prolongation from the first mandibular arch but from the mesenchyme of the neural crest in the head region which give rise to the mid-face structures
