RESUMO
In a survey carried out during summer and autumn of 2004, for snails of medical importance, nine species were recovered. They were Biomphalaria alexandrina, B. glabrata, B. pfeifferi, Bulinus truncatus, B. forskalii, Lymnaea natalensis, Bellamya [=Vivipara] unicolor, Physa acuta and Hydrobia mesaensis. Parasitological examination revealed that B. alexandrina, B. glabrata and L. natalensis harboured immature stages of their concerned trematode parasites. Moreover, P. acuta harboured the immature stage of the nematode parasite Parastrongylus cantonensis

A field survey was done in Ezbet El-Bakly [Tamyia Center], El-Fayoum Governorate to determine the magnitude of Schistosomiasis haematobium and mansoni and to evaluate the efficacy of Mirazid [the oleo-resin extract from myrrh of Commiphora molmol tree, family: Burseraceae] in the treatment of both types of schistosomiasis. Among the 1019 individuals parasitologically examined, the prevalence of S. haematobium and S. mansoni was 4.2% and 2.4%, respectively, and the geometric mean egg count [GMEC] was 33.2 eggs/10 ml urine and 113.3 eggs/g stools. It was concluded that mirazid proved to be safe and very effective in the treatment of S. Haematobium and S. Mansoni infections under field conditions

A field survey was done in Ezbet EI-Bakly, El-Fayoum Governorate, Egypt to assess the efficacy and safety of mirazid in the treatment of human fascioliasis. Among 1019 individuals examined for parasitosis, the prevalence of fascioliasis was 1.7% and the geometric mean egg count [GMEC] was 33.2 eggs/g stools. About 23.5% of the fascioliasis patients were asymptomatic. It was concluded that mirazid [or myrrh extract of Commiphora molmol] is safe and effective in the treatment of human fascioliasis under the field conditions

A cross sectional survey was conducted in two Egyptian villages [El- Shoara Village, which is famous for obesity and Alexandria Village, where obesity was not so prevalent] including 2000 subjects aged 20 years screened by an estimation of body mass index [BMI]. A case control study was adopted. The study included 201 obese cases from the El-Shoara and 201 non-obese ones from Alexandria Village. Both cases and controls were subjected to a questionnaire interview covering the sociodemographic data and KAP about obesity. Dietary data were collected by a standardized 24-hour dietary recall and a dietary assessment was carried out by the software program World Food Dietary Assessment Version 2.0. History taking, thorough clinical examination and blood analysis for lipid profile were done. The levels of total physical activity were assessed

This study evaluated the efficacy of mirazid [Commiphora molmol] in the treatment of parasitologically and clinically and ultrasonography confirmed cases of Schistosomiasis haematobium in Tatoon Village. A total of 70 out of 885 individuals of both sexes [>15-60 years old] screened for S. haematobium infection was selected. They had a light infection [1-10 eggs/10 ml], moderate infection [10-100 eggs/10 ml] and heavy infection [>100/10 ml]. They were subjected to urine and stool analysis, renal function tests, clinical examination and abdomino-pelvic ultrasound. They were treated with mirazid as 10 mg/kg. However, eight of them were unable to swallow the drug. Out of the 62 Schistosomiasis haematobium patients, 57 were cured after two-month follow up and the cure rate reached 95.2% on the 3rd month post-mirazid treatment. The cure result was evaluated clinically, parasitologically and ultrasonographically

A total of 455 children were chosen randomly and surveyed for giardiasis by stool examination using several techniques. A case control study design was adopted, where 91 cases of giardiasis [symptomatic and asymptomatic] and 101 children giardiasis free were examined. ABO blood groups and HLA typing were investigated. It was concluded that blood group A was more susceptible to giardiasis especially asymptomatic form, while blood group B was less susceptible to giardiasis. On the other hand, there was no association between AB or O and giardiasis. But, there was a strong association between HLA A10, A11, B5, B7 and B17 phenotypes and symptomatic giardiasis and an association as well between HLA B7, B17, Bw14 and Bw40 and asymptomatic giardiasis
