RESUMO

Background: Renal anemia is associated with increased cardio vascular morbidity and mortality and decreased quality of life. It may worsen the preexisting heart disease and consequently may accelerate the progression of renal dysfunction in a vicious circle.Renal anemia related mainly to decreased production of erythropoietin [EPO] by the kidney, decreased it's response by bone marrow and disturbed iron status

Aim of the Study: Was to evaluate the relationship between HCV infection and erythrropoietin in patients on regular HD

Patients and Methods: This study included 50 hemodialysis patients [25 patients +ve HCV and 25 -ve HCV], 16 were male and 34 were female, and their ages ranged from 20 to 67 years, with a mean +/- SD of 50.5 +/- 12.7 years, 15 apparently healthy individuals with normal kidney function and not anemic were included in the study as a control Group

Results: The patients were divided into two groups as the following: Group I consisted of 25 hemodialysis patients were positive for HCV antibody, which was confirmed by PCR, and their ages ranged from 27 to 67 years, with a mean of 47.28 +/- 11.91 years. Group II consisted of 25 hemodialysis patients were negative for HCV antibody; their ages ranged from 20 to 65 years, with a mean age of 46.32 +/- 11.50 years. In contrast, 15 patients served as age-matched and gender-matched; their ages ranged from 20 to 55 years, with a mean age of 44.13 +/- 10.76 years, and were used as controls

Conclusion: Serum levels of erythropoietin correlate with chronic hepatitis C infection, which was associated with an increased number of RBCs and higher values of hemoglobin and hematocrit, which Result in lowering of the necessary erythropoietin dose and iron therapy

RESUMO

Two new metabolites, a diglyceride ester, corticaglyceride [1] and a sphingolipid, corticaceramide [5] were isolated and characterized from the Red Sea sponge Negombata corticata [Carter]. Other previously reported compounds including nervonic acid [2], 24-methylene cholesterol [3] and cholesterol [4] were also isolated for the first time from this genus. GLC analysis of the unsaponifiable matter revealed that it contained a high percentage of hydrocarbons [89.474%] with n-hexacosane as a major component [10.979%]. Furthermore, the identified sterol represents 7.162%. GLC analysis of the fatty acid methyl esters revealed that nervonic acid is the major fatty acid [73. 782%]. Compound 3 showed anti-inflammatory activity, while compounds 1 and 5 showed mild anti-oxidant properties

RESUMO

Seventy patients [55 males and 15 females] with benign lower ureteric strictures were included in this study. Six patients had bilateral stricture. The strictures were due to inflammatory process [40 patients], ureteroscopy [12 patients], ureterolithotomy [7 patients], hysterectomy [6 patients] and ovarian cystectomy [5 patients]. Two groups were studied. On failure in one technique, the patient was shifted to another one. In group I, 33 ureteral strictures were treated with balloon dilatation. In group II, the strictures were treated with endoureterotomies. The strictures of group II were subdivided into three subgroups according to the method of endoureterotomy whether cold knife [n = 28], uretero-resectoscope [n = 30, 21 patients of them had failed balloon dilatation] or Acucise cutting balloon [n = 10, 2 of them had failed endoureterotomy by cold knife and 5 patients had failed endoureterotomy by uretero- resectoscope]. Double-J stent 7 F was left for 6-9 weeks in all cases. A postoperative follow up was done in all cases by repeating ultrasound and excretory urography after three months and once every six months, thereafter. The results showed that the overall success rate of balloon dilatation was 36.4%. Only 12 of 33 ureters were patent during the follow up. The success rates of cold knife, electrocautery and Acucisendoureterotomy were 57.1%, 83.3% and 90%, respectively
