RESUMO

With the aim of defecting the potential hazard of air embolism, end tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO2) was monitored in 238 patients undergoing neurosurgery (in the sitting position), for early detection of venous air embolism (VAE). Fifty six episodes (26.3%) of significant fall in ETCO2 were observed in 41 patients (17.2%). Haemodynamic disturbances occurred in only 26 patients (10.9%) and were always preceded by a fall in ETCO2. Thirteen patients had positive air aspiration and cardiac murmurs were heard in only six. One patient suffered severe hypoxaemia (PaO2 = 55 mm Hg) whereas two had severe haemodynamic disturbances, but could be promptly resuscitated.

RESUMO

Out of 3001 salmonella received during 1984-85, 2985 strains were tested for antibiotic resistance and R-pattern transfer. Multidrug resistance was observed in 73% of diarrhoeal and 43% of non-diarrhoeal isolates. Antibiotic resistance markers were transferable in 46.6% of diarrhoeal and 41.1% of non-diarrhoeal isolates. Two out of 4 salmonella sero-types isolated for the first time in India during this period were multidrug resistant.

RESUMO

The inhibitory effects of aflatoxin B1 were found to be related to the gram character in procaryotes, used in this study. Ethylene diamine tetra chloroacetic acid (0·05 % w/v) or Tween-80 (0·05 % v/v) addition accentuated the aflatoxin B1 growth inhibition in Salmonella typhi and Escherichia coli at different pH values. The inhibition of lipase production was only 5–20 % in Pseudomonas fluorescence ca. 25–48% in Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus at different aflatoxin B1 concentrations (4–16 μg/ml).However, inhibition of α-amylase induction was complete in Bacillus megaterium whereas the inhibition was partial in Pseudomonas fluorescence (27–40%) at 32 μg aflatoxin B1 concentration. An increase in leakage of cell contents and decreased inulin uptake were observed in toxin incubated sheep red blood cell suspension (1 %) with increased aflatoxin B1 concentration.
