RESUMO

Halitosis is a universal medico social problem in all communities. It refers to the unpleasant odor that originates from the mouth or elsewhere. Halitosis is multi factorial and may involve both oral and non-oral conditions. Many adults suffer from genuine halitosis occasionally, whilst an estimat-ed 10-30% of the population suffers from this problem regularly. More than 75% of all cases have an oral origin and the most frequent are poor oral hygiene, tongue coating, periodontal disease and decreased salivary flow rate. At least 50 % of the population suffers from halitosis and around 25 % of these individuals experience such a severe problem that it affects their social life. This Descriptive Cross Sectional Study was carried out in patients attending the dental OPD at Private Dental Hospital, Gadap Town, and Karachi. The data were collected by self-structured questionnaire related to personal information regarding knowledge, attitude and practice related to halitosis and convenience sampling technique was used. The written informed consent was taken from participants. The SPSS 20 version software was used for analysis. 56.3% [214] were males and 43.7% [166] were females. Out of 380 study participants, 208 [54.7%] had the knowledge about bad breath while 172 [45.3%] subjects were unaware about it. 209 [55%] individual cleaned their teeth with toothpaste and miswak [wooden stick], 141 [37.1%] individuals did not use toothpaste / miswak and 30 [7.9%] used occasionally. Knowledge, attitude and practice about halitosis among the studied groups were not satisfactory

RESUMO

Objective: To evaluate the knowledge, attitude and behavior of private schools children regarding oral hygiene status of Gadap Town Karachi, Pakistan


Materials and Methods:This descriptive cross sectional study was carried out in two private schools of Gadap town UC- 2,Karachi Pakistan. A self-structured questionnaire related to KAP of oral hygiene was used and data was collected through questionnaire. This research was conducted in 290 school children aged 11-19 years who were examined and fullfilled the inclusion criteria. Questionnaire was designed and three house officers were trained for obtaining the data. The knowledge about oral hygiene and gingival index was determined and recorded from each student. Data was analyzed using SPSS vession 20


Results: There were 67.9% male and 32.1% female students. About 81.4% of students had the knowledge regarding oral health, 12.8% individuals had no knowledge and 5.9% students reported Idon't know about oral health. Students with knowledge of brushing of teeth twice daily was 81.7%, and without knowledge were13.1% and 5.2% individuals said I don't know.73.8% study participants had the knowledge of sweets / candy as harmful for oral health


Conclusion:Private schools children of Gadap town Karachi Pakistan had knowledge of oral hygiene practices but oral hygiene instructions should be given to further improve the present status

RESUMO

Objective: To assess caries and oral health status of disabled individuals of special school in Gadap Town of Karachi, Pakistan


Materials and Methods: This descriptive cross sectional study was carried out in 94 participants. The study was conducted on special persons, aged between 4-33 years, who were examined for caries and oral health status and were then included in the study upon fulfilling the inclusion criteria. A self-structured questionnaire related to the DMFT and plaque index was developed and data of each disabled individual was collected by trained house officers. Data was analyzed using SPSS software 20 version


Results: In this study males were 72.6% and females were 26.3%.Study participants with mental retardation were 41.1%, being highest in frequency, followed by cerebral palsy 9.5%,autistic disorder 3.2% and Down`s syndrome 3.2% respectively. Study results clearly indicated that oral hygiene was inadequate in all conditions of special persons who were studied. The group with lack of motor skills did not have significantly better oral hygiene than the group who had good motor skills. Overall both groups had poor oral hygiene


Conclusion: Oral health status in disabled individuals is found to be poor.Adequate follow-up of daily oral hygiene, even in self-sufficient special persons is needed. There is a strong need for enhanced education on mechanical as well as chemical plaque control to the parents/ guardians/ care givers of the disabled individuals

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge, attitude and behaviour of hepatitis B and infection control of dental and medical undergraduates of private medical university. Karachi. Pakistan. It was the cross sectional survey study. 227 clinical students were approached. A self-structured questionnaire related to KAP of HB was used and data collected through survey questionnaire from each individual. Response rate was 100%. Data were entered and analyzed using Stata software. There were 84 [37%] students from dental college and 143[63%] students from medical section. There were 92[41%] male and 125[59%] female students. The mean level of knowledge, attitude and practice of HB in medical and dental graduates was 58% and 65% respectively. The dental graduates had overall high KAP score than medical undergraduates and the results were statistically significant. Description of the frequency of knowledge, attitude and practice of hepatitis B and infection control has revealed that dental students follow preventive guidelines of transmission during treatment procedure and were more cautious during practice than medical students
