RESUMO

Background: violence against women is a global phenomenon

Aims: to estimate and forecast cognizable crime against women in New Delhi, India, from 2016 to 2020

Methods: reported cognizable crime against women in New Delhi for 2009-2015 was extracted for statistical analysis, synthesis and modelling. The cognizable crimes reported are rape, attempt to commit rape, kidnapping and abduction, dowry deaths, assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty, insult to modesty of women, cruelty by husband or his relative, importation of girls from foreign countries, abetment of suicide of women and indecent representation of women

Results: the actual number of registered cases of crime against women ranged from 4251 [2009] to 17104 [2015]. The projected number of cases ranged between 18991 [95% confidence interval [CI]: 13092-24889] in 2016 to 28663 [95% CI: 22314-35013]] in 2020. A rising trend in crime against women was noticed in New Delhi, ranging from 204.6 [2016] to 308.8 [2020] per 100000 women. After witnessing a substantive increase [116.2%] in reported crime against women in New Delhi in 2013, the subsequent actual and projected rise appears to be incremental in nature, with an annual percentage point change ranging between 9% and 18%

Conclusion: within limitations, it is concluded that the safety of women will continue to be a concern in the near future

RESUMO

Alopecia areata [AA] is a nonscarring, autoimmune hair loss on the scalp, and/or body. Etiology and pathogenesis are still unknown. The most common site affected is the scalp in the form of solitary or multiple patches of alopecia. Histopathology is characterized by an increased number of telogen follicles and presence of inflammatory lymphocytic infiltrate in the peribulbar region. Corticosteroids are the most popular drugs for the treatment of this disease. This review precisely outlines the etiologic and pathogenic mechanisms, clinical features, diagnosis and management of alopecia areata

RESUMO

To determine level of HIV/AIDS knowledge among first-year MBBS, nursing and pharmacy students of a health university. A pre-designed, pre-tested, anonymous self-administered, semi-structured questionnaire was circulated among available 129, 53 and 55 first-year MBBS, nursing and pharmacy students during Oct' 09. Data entry, management and analysis were carried out using MS excel and software statistical package. Out of the total 237 students, there were 123 [51.9%] female and 103 [44.0%] students from rural native place. A majority of students were able to correctly write the full form of AIDS [95.8%] in comparison to HIV [72.6%] and the difference between two terminologies were known to 87.6%, 81.1% and 70.9% of MBBS, nursing and pharmacy students, respectively. All four common routes of transmission of infection and methods of prevention were known to majority of the lot. However, injecting drug users [IDU] and truck driver as a risk category was correctly reported by 67.5% and 55.3% students, whereas 35.9% incorrectly mentioned that smoking is a risk factor for acquiring infection. A statistically significant [P <0.05] proportion of MBBS followed by nursing and pharmacy students were aware that infection neither spreads by social activities like handshake/playing nor by mosquito bite. However, low level was ascertained with regard to items related to non-curability of infection [57.4%] and availability of anti-retro viral therapy [27.4%]. Overall high level of knowledge was recorded in the present study with a difference noted among students in three professional streams
