RESUMO

OBJECTIVE@#The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the facial skeletal patterns and the shape of the mandibular symphysis in adults with malocclusion by using a structural equation model (SEM).@*METHODS@#Ninety adults who had malocclusion and had records of facial skeletal measurements performed using cone-beam computed tomography were selected for this study. The skeletal measurements were classified into three groups (vertical, anteroposterior, and transverse). Cross-sectional images of the mandibular symphysis were analyzed using generalized Procrustes and principal component (PC) analyses. A SEM was constructed after the factors were extracted via factor analysis.@*RESULTS@#Two factors were extracted from the transverse, vertical, and anteroposterior skeletal measurements. Latent variables were extracted for each factor. PC1, PC2, and PC3 were selected to analyze the variations of the mandibular symphyseal shape. The SEM was constructed using the skeletal variables, PCs, and latent variables. The SEM showed that the vertical latent variable exerted the most influence on the mandibular symphyseal shape.@*CONCLUSIONS@#The relationship between the skeletal pattern and the mandibular symphysis was analyzed using a SEM, which showed that the vertical facial skeletal pattern had the highest effect on the shape of the mandibular symphysis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study constructed a partial-least-square path-modeling (PLS-PM) model and found the pathway by which the postsurgical vertical dimension (VD) affects the extent of the final mandibular setback on the B point at the posttreatment stage for the skeletal class III surgery-first approach (SFA). METHODS: This study re-analyzed the data from the retrospective study by Lee et al. on 40 patients with skeletal class III bimaxillary SFA. Variables were obtained from cone beam computed tomography (CBCT)-generated cephalograms. Authors investigated all variables at each time point to build a PLS-PM model to verify the effect of the VD on the final setback of the mandible. RESULTS: From PLS-PM, an increase in VD10 was found to decrease the absolute value of the final setback amount of the mandible, which reflects the postsurgical physiological responses to both surgery and orthodontic treatment, which, in turn, can be interpreted as an increase in postoperative mandibular changes. CONCLUSIONS: To resolve the issue of collinear cephalometric data, the present study adopted PLS-PM to assess the orthodontic treatment. From PLS-PM, it was able to summarize the effect of increased postsurgery occlusal vertical dimension on the increased changeability of the B point position at the posttreatment stage.

RESUMO

Mites in the genus Chorioptes cause a mild form of skin disease in both domestic and wild ruminants. In July 2006, dermatitis characterized by alopecia, marked lichenification, accumulation of crust, and fissuring was recognized in 14 out of 200 Holstein dairy cattle raised in the cattle farm of the National Institute of Animal Science in Cheonan, Republic of Korea. Skin lesions were distributed mainly over the tail base, and sacral and perineal regions. Microscopic examinations of skin scraping samples from severely affected areas revealed numerous mites of all developmental stages. Morphologically, pedicels of the mites were short and unjointed. The tarsal suckers occurred on the pedicels of all the legs in the male worm and on the first, second, and fourth pair of legs in the adult female worm. A single long seta at the tarsus of legs III and the length of legs II being about twice as long as legs IV in adult male mites were observed. Arising anterior to the inner-most spatulate seta was a short seta with an average of 26.4 +/- 5.8 micrometer in length. Also, the length of setae #4 on the opisthosomal lobes was relatively short. Based on these observations, the mites were identified as Choriptes texanus. Although the chorioptic mange may not influence the mortality rate in the affected farm, reports indicate that a decline in milk production can be observed. This is the first report of chorioptic infestation in a cattle farm from Korea.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Polyglutamine diseases are a group of diseases caused by the expansion of a polyglutamine tract in the protein. The present study was performed to verify if polyglutamine disease transgenic Drosophila models show similar dysfunctions as are seen in human patients. METHODS: Polyglutamine disease transgenic Drosophila were tested for their climbing ability. And using genetic methods, the effects of anti-apoptotic gene bcl-2 and chemical chaperones on neurodegeneration were observed. Also, spinocerebellar ataxia 2 (SCA2) transgenic Drosophila lines were generated for future studies. RESULTS: Expanded forms of spinocerebellar ataxia 3 (SCA3) transgenic protein causes characteristic locomotor dysfunction when expressed in the nervous system of Drosophila but the anti-apoptotic gene bcl-2 shows no evidence of ameliorating the deleterious effect of the expanded protein. However, Glycerol, a chemical chaperone, seemed to reduce the toxicity, at least in the eyes of the transgenic flies. The level SCA2 expression is too weak in the transgenic SCA2 Drosophila for evaluation. CONCLUSION: SCA3 transgenic Drosophila show ataxic behavior as observed in human patients. Chemical chaperones such as glycerol may prove beneficial in this class of genetic disease, which has no current method of cure.

RESUMO

Acute pancreatitis is an uncommon complication of CAPD. The clinical diagnosis of acute pancreatitis is difficult, since the presenting features are similar to those of dialysis associated peritonitis, and a high index of suspicion is necessary. Serum amylase values three times greater than the upper limit of normal and effluent amylase greater than 100U/L are helpful in diagnosing acute pancreatitis in CAPD patients. We report a case of pancreatitis in a patient on CAPD in whom diagnosis was made by serum amylase, effluent amylase, abdominal sonogram.

RESUMO

Isolated ACTH deficiency is a rare cause of secondary adrenocortical insufficiency. Adrenal crisis in isolated ACTH deficiency is less common compared to primary adrenal insufficiency, but isolated ACTH deficiency is an important cause of hypoglycemia. Recently we experienced a 41-year-old man admitted because of mental confusion. On admission, plasma glucose and sodium concentration were 1.7, 132 mmol/L, respectively. Basal plasma ACTH and cortisol levels were low and other pituitary hormone showed normal response to combined pituitary stimulation test except growth hormone. Plasma ACTH concentration remained low even after intravenous injection of ovine corticotropin releasing factor. It suggest that the defect of ACTH secretion was apparently due to intrinsic pituitary rather than hypothalamic disease. The sellar CT showed the fossa to be filled by cerebrospinal fluid. After treatment with glucocorticoid, he had no further evidence of hypoglycemia and hyponatremia. In conclusion, we report a case of isolated ACTH deficiency with empty sella.

RESUMO

This is a retrospective review of our experience with endoscopic extraction of 20 cases of foreign body on the upper gastrointestinal tract at sanggye paik hospital from Oct. 1989 to Nov. 1993. Among 20 cases, 3 cases were under 5years of age and 17 cases were over 27years of age. 9 cases (45%) were located in the esophagus, 8 cases (40%) were in the stomach and 3 cases (15%) were in the duodenum. All children (100%) have true foreign body, almost of all adults (82%) have food-related foreign body. Dysphagia with chest pain or vomiting was the most common symptom in the esophageal foreign body. Epigastric pain and vomiting or hematemesis were common symptoms in the stomach or duodenal foreign body, All of the esophageal foreign body (100%) were extracted within 72 hours, most of all (91%) stomach and duodenal foreign body were extracted after 72 hours.
