A extensão universitária é processo educativo, cultural e científico que articula o ensino e a pesquisa de formaindissociável e viabiliza a relação transformadora entre universidade e sociedade. Dentro desse contexto, o autorfaz um breve histórico da implantação da extensão universitária no Brasil. Discorre sobre os seus benefícios naformação profissional e na expansão do conhecimento oriundo das universidades. Conclui que a extensão universitáriaé fundamental para garantir a missão social da universidade de formar cidadãos comprometidos coma sociedade na qual vivem e profissionais capacitados a promover o diálogo construtivo dos saberes popularescom os conhecimentos técnicos e científicos, valorizando a diversidade sócio-cultural das regiões brasileiras ea apropriação das tecnologias sociais pelas comunidades.
The university extension is the educative, cultural, and, scientific process that articulates education and researchin an undissociable way and enables the transforming relationship between university and society. In thiscontext, the author concisely reports the historic of the university extension introduction in Brazil. He addressesits benefits in the professional formation and in the expansion of knowledge derived by universities. He concludesthat the university extension is fundamental to assure the social mission of the university to educate citizens compromisedwith the society where they live and capable professionals to foment a constructive dialogue betweenpopular and technical/scientific knowledge, increasing in value the socio-cultural diversity of the Brazilian regionsand the appropriation of social technologies by communities.
