RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the validity of two kinds of physical activity trackers (PAT) during treadmill exercise. METHOD: 14 healthy people performed cardiopulmonary exercise test by means of Bruce protocol. The omnidirectional PATs were placed onto the right wrist and ankle, and the temperature sensing PATs were placed onto the right arm and lower leg. Simultaneous measurement of body motion was continuously recorded during cardiopulmonary exercise test. Then we checked total calorie expenditure and duration above moderated intensity activity (>3 METs) from each PATs and gas analyzer. RESULTS: Total calorie expenditures of PAT were significantly underestimated than gas analyzer, except the temperature sensing PAT applied onto the leg, but all of them showed significant correlation. The duration above moderate intensity activity of the PAT did not show significant difference comparing with gas analyzer, except the omnidirectional PAT applied onto the arm, but all of them showed significant correlation. CONCLUSION: Both omnidirectional PATs and temperature sensing PATs could estimate the total calorie expenditure and the duration above moderate intensity activity. But it is necessary to apply exercise-specific protocol to PAT to enhance the accuracy of estimating energy expenditure during periods of exercise.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the peak torque of shoulder according to the size of the rotator cuff tear. METHOD: With 26 patients of unilateral rotator cuff tear, we measured the concentric isokinetic peak torque of shoulder, using Con-Trex isokinetic dynamometer (CMV AG, Deubendorf, Switzerland). We measured flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, external rotation, and internal rotation torques and calculated the peak toque ratio of flexion/ extension, abduction/adduction and external rotation/internal rotation. Before the test, we injected 1% lidocaine to the subacromial bursa to minimize the error that can be caused by pain. The difference of peak torque according to the size of tear was compared. RESULTS: Comparing the peak torque between affected and sound side, significant difference in flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, internal rotation, and external rotation were shown, but there were no difference in peak torque's ratio in flexion/extension, abduction/adduction, and internal rotation/external rotation. When we compared the peak torque according to the tear size, it didn't show significant difference and also there were no difference of peak torque's ratio in flexion/extension, abduction/adduction, internal rotation/external rotation. CONCLUSION: When we measured the shoulder's strength of rotator cuff tear, peak torque decreased in all motion. But the peak torque's loss and peak torque's ratio is not related with size of tear.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: We examined changes in the corneal curvature and recurrence rate following pterygium surgery with relation to pterygium size and morphology. METHODS: One hundred eyes with primary nasal pterygia were graded as atrophic(Group 1), intermediate (Group 2), or fleshy(Group 3) according to morphology and grouped as small area group or large area group according to an assessment of pterygium length from and along the limbus. Corneal curvature was measured with autokeratometer at 3 days, 1 week, 1 month, and 6months preoperatively and postopera-tively as well. Recurrence was evaluated at the same periods. RESULTS: Each group had no significant difference(p>0.05) to preoperative corneal curvature when pterygia were divided according to morphology. Large area group had significantly smaller corneal curvature than the preoperative one(p0.05). The angle of astigmatism had the tendency of against-the-rule at 3 days postoperatively(163.3degrees), more strikingly in small area group(159.1degrees). The recurrence rate was 10% totally with no significant difference among each group(p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The magnitude of the corneal curvature following pterygium surgery was smaller than the preoperative one and the change of angle had the tendency of against-the-rule astigmatism. Surgically induced changes in the corneal curvature and recurrence rate related to morphology had no significant difference, but preoperative corneal curvature and postoperative changes were related to pterygium size.

RESUMO

Assessment of the optic nerve head or the retinal nerve fiber layer is essential for the early diagnosis and monitoring of glaucoma. We compared mean retinal nerve fiber layer[RNFL]thickness with Average, and compared RNFL CSA with Integral between Heidelberg Retina Tomograph[HRT] and GDx nerve fiber analyzer[GDx]at global, superior, inferior, nasal and temporal area. Mean RNFL thickness in HRT was significantly greater than Average in GDx at all quadrants[p<0.001], and correlated with Average at global, superior and inferior area[p<0.05]. RNFL CSA in HRT was significantly greater than Integral in GDx at superior, inferior and nasal quadrants[p<0.001], and correlated with Integral at superior and inferior quadrants[p<0.05]. In conclusion, the two parameters related to nerve fiber layer in HRT were measured greater than those in GDx. Correlations of the above parameters between HRT and GDx were mainly present at superior and inferior quadrant. These results may come from regional difference in measurement between HRT and GDx, and uncorrected disc tilting in HRT appears to have adverse effects on the correlations of the above parameters between HRT and GDx at nasal or temporal quadrant.

RESUMO

To investigate the relationship between psychological behavior and the development of central serous chorioretinopathy, we performed a study on stress and personality characteristics on 39 central serous chorioretinopathy patients and 38 healthy subjects as a control group. We used Life Change Inventory(MMPI) for personality characteristics. As a result, the mean stress scale in the patients group was significantly higher than in the normal control group(p<0.05) and the mean T-xcore of three neurotic scales such as hypochondriasis, depression and hysteria in the patients group were significantly higher than in the normal control group(p=0.029, 0.004, 0.012).

RESUMO

The use of angiographic embolization gas been well described for the control of gynecologic bleeding. Recently, we have experienced the successful embolization in two case of serons bleeding related to giynecologic malignancy. Clinical evaluation revealed a gynecologic cancer with active bleeding. Becaause we judged that conservative management was unable to cuntrol the bleeding, we underwent an angiographic embolization. The result presented here indicates that angiographic embolization is a relatively safe, effective and rapid procedure that should be considered early in management of gynecohogic cancer bleeding that is unresponsive to conservative management.
