RESUMO

Statement of Problem: Verrucous carcinoma [VC] is a rare type of squamous cell carcinoma [SCC]. These two lesions have many biological and clinical differences and proper diagnosis of these tumors has a great influence on the patient's treatment

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the expression of p53 and Bcl-2 in VC, SCC and pseudoepitheliamatos hyperplasia [PEH]

Methods and Material: In this study, expressions of p53 and Bcl-2 markers in 20 samples of paraffin blocks of VC, 23 samples of SCC, and 22 samples of PEH were examined by immunohistochemistry method. Immunoreactiv-ity was diagnosed for p53 in the nucleus and for Bcl-2 in the cytoplasm of cells. Then, the mean percentage of the expression of p53 and Bcl-2 was compared. The collected data were analyzed, using SPSS Ver. 7.5. For statistical analysis, ANOVA and Tukey tests were used for Bcl-2, and Kruskal-Wallis was used for comparison of the markers

Result: There was a significant difference in the mean of Bcl-2 expression between the lesions which the VC was significantly lower than the others. There was also a significant difference in the mean of p53 expression between the lesions

Conclusion: p53 and Bcl-2 are two immunohistochemical markers which can be helpful in differential diagnosis of VC and SCC

RESUMO

Leishmaniasis is a common cutaneous disease which is due to the infection with protozoan parasite named leishmania. This parasite is transmitted to a human by an infected sand fly. Both clinical forms of cutaneous leishmaniasis [dry-wet] are endemic in Khorasan province. The purpose of this study was to report two leishmaniasis cases with just lip involvement. This report is about two patients with lip leishmaniasis, without any skin or mucusal involvement in which the clinical features were diffuse lip swelling and ulcer in lower lip vermelion. These patients had been referred to oral medicine department of Mashhad dental school where a smear and biopsy were obtained which confirmed the clinical diagnosis of leishmaniasis. Thereafter, the patients were referred to a dermatologist for treatment. In later follow up, complete healing of lesions was observed. The city of Mashhad is one of the centers with high frequency of dry cutaneous leishmaniasis and facial involvement in this disease is common. So it is necessary for dentists to consider leishmaniasis in differential diagnosis of lip and nose swellings and ulcers

RESUMO

Lipoma is the most common benign tumor which composed 25-50% of soft tissue tumors. This tumor can undergo a variety of changes, one of which is ossification. Osteolipoma is a rare benign tumor which is especially uncommon in the oral cavity. This is a case report of an osteolipoma of the oral cavity in a 68-year-old male who was referred for a painless mass on the mandibular alveolar mucosa since about four years ago. Histopathologically, the lesion was composed of trabeculae of bone and mature adipose tissue confirming to be an osteolipoma. The patient recovered after resection. Osteolipoma can originate from osseous metaplasia within a long-standing lipoma following permanent stress, repeated microtrauma and prolonged ischaemia.Osteolipoma has the same prognosis as simple lipoma. The treatment of choice is excision. There have been no reports of recurrence

RESUMO

Since remaining impacted teeth may result in pathologic lesions, prophylactic extraction of third molar-which is the most frequent impaction-is among the most common surgical procedures. Our study was performed to evaluate the histopathoiogical changes of impacted molar teeth follicles. In this descriptive study, 54 impacted molar teeth follicles of 50 patients with age range of 15-38, and examined in the surgery ward of Mashhad dental school from June to November 2005, were extracted by a surgeon and pathologic evaluation were performed. In this study, the most commonly extracted teeth were mandibular molars [79%] and 74% of patients were under 25. The most frequent location of the extracted teeth was mesioangular [46%]. In microscopic evaluation of specimens, 61% were unchanged dental follicles, 12.9% were odontogenic cysts and 24% had inflammation. Considering the low incidence of pathologic changes in impacted third molar follicles, it is better not to extract them except in a clear indication. These teeth are better to be monitored by imaging with the 6-12 month intervals
