RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Difference between recumbent length and stature in an individual has been observed by many researchers in the past in European and American populations. The present study explores the intra-individual differences between recumbent length and stature (R.L.-Stature). METHODS: A sample of 920 school-going children was considered in Chandigarh city. RESULT: These differences are found to be statistically significant and have definite relationship with age and weight of the children. The mean difference between recumbent length and stature is found to be greater in males than in females between 5 through 10 years and between 15 through 18 years of age. However, between 10 through 15 years, it was greater in females than in males. CONCLUSION: This was largely due to the fact that adolescent spurt in stature preceded by two to three years in girls than that of boys. This difference was also found to be significantly correlated with age, weight and stature in both the sexes. Two regression equations are derived separately for the two sexes, from which, one can convert recumbent length into stature and vice-versa.

RESUMO

Serum samples obtained from 25 patients of mycetoma caused by Madurella mycetomi in 18, Streptomyces somaliensis in 5, Streptomyces madurae and streptomyces palletierii from 1 each and also from 25 healthy controls were evaluated for immunoglobulins IgG, IgM and IgA by radial immunodiffusion method using tripartigen plates. All the three classes of immunoglobulins showed increased concentration in cases of mycetoma by M. mycetomi and S. pelletierii. The raised levels of IgG and IgM in cases of mycetoma caused by S. madurae and S. somaliensis where bones were involved, were not statistically significant. IgA was consistently high in all cases of mycetoma irrespective of causative agent and tissue involved. These alterations may possibly reflect relatively poor IgG and IgM response in individuals with extension of mycetoma lesion to bones.

RESUMO

The pattern of muscle paralysis and paresis in the lower limbs has been studied in 1356 children with 1800 poliomyelitic limbs, revealed that more than two-third (68 = 55%) muscles were affected, with the ratio of paresis and paralysed muscles were 1.89:1.00. The muscles most frequently affected were tibialis anterior (1516), quadriceps (1465) and tibialis posterior (1435) while tibialis anterior (1070), tibialis posterior (820) and quadriceps (766) were most commonly paralysed in descending order. The tibialis anterior which leads in paralysis group, has come last in order of frequency of paresis. The highest segmental incidence of affection of muscles found in second to fourth lumbar segments while muscle paralysis is found in fourth lumbar spinal segment. The commonest deformities encountered in residual poliomyelitis are flexion-abduction contracture hip, flexion contracture knee and valgus deformity foot.

RESUMO

Seventy-five cases of tibial condylar fractures irrespective of type of fractures were treated on a purely conservative line of management, consisting of traction and early mobilisation. The follow-up ranged from 6 months to 10 years; 67 cases had satisfactory results. Causes of unsatisfactory results were stiff knee, flexion deformity, osteo-arthritis and ligamentous instability.
