RESUMO

Background: Photic sneeze reflex (PSR) also known as autosomal dominant compelling helioophthalmic outburst is a rare condition characterized by uncontrolled sneezing in response to bright light. The exact mechanism causing this is poorly understood. However, various hypotheses have been proposed. Ophthalmic examination involves exposing the patient to bright light like slit lamp, indirect ophthalmoscopy and surgical microscope, which can trigger sneezing in PSR patients. Purpose: The purpose of this video is to draw light to this rare phenomenon and its implication in ophthalmic surgery. Synopsis: A 74?year?old male patient presented with diminution of vision in left eye. On routine slit lamp and IDO examination, patient had repeated sneezing. We diagnosed him to have photic sneeze reflex. He had pseudophakic bullous keratopathy in the right eye and senile immature cataract in the left eye. Taking into consideration his one eyed status and PSR, measures were taken accordingly and cataract surgery was performed uneventfully. We describe in this video the challenges encountered with this phenomenon and approach in such cases. Highlights: In this video, we tried to give an idea about photic sneeze reflex and its theories. Also, we tried to bring out the impact of PSR on ophthalmologic practice.

RESUMO

Aim: To explore the potential role of Punica granatum ethanolic extract (PGEE) in Cyclophosphamide (CP) induced testicular toxicity. Methods: Healthy male Wistar rats were allotted to 4 groups (N=6, each) Group I: Control, Group II: CP 15mg/kg twice a week, Group III: PGEE 100mg/kg, Group IV: CP and PGEE for 28 days. At the end of the treatment period, organ weight, body weight, epididymal sperm count, motility, morphology, SOD, catalase, GSH, ACP & testosterone level in the testis were evaluated. Results: The CP treated rats showed toxicity evidenced by decreased organ and body weight, decreased sperm quality and testosterone level also increase in MDA and decrease in antioxidants SOD, GSH indicating oxidative stress. In contrast PGEE co-treatment with CP resulted in significant restoration of the above mentioned parameters. Conclusion: These results indicate that PGEE attenuates CP induced testicular toxicity through its ROS scavenging activity.

RESUMO

Decalcification and its effect on microhardness of root canal dentin by an aqueous solution of 17% EDTA at different time intervals were studied.Single rooted forty extracted human premolar teeth after adequate processing and embedded with acrylic resin were randomly divided into 8 groups based on different time intervals. Each sample group was assessed for Ca2+ release into the test solution by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, respectively and then were subjected for microhardness testing.17% EDTA and 0.9% Saline, test solutions were used; EDTA was adjusted to 7.5 pH. Data analysis was done by One Way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the comparison of means was done by using Tukey’s multiple comparison tests. The decalcifying activity of 17% EDTA solution was time dependent and increased immersion time showing very high significant influence on the amount of calcium extracted (<strong>F=154.304, p). The reduction in microhardness for 17% EDTA solution was time dependent and increased immersion time showing very high significant decrease in the microhardness among the different time intervals tested (<strong>F=249.925, p < 0.0005</strong>).Effect of 17 % EDTA solution as root canal irrigant is time dependent as evidenced by dentin microhardness reduction.
