The use of explicit diagnostic criteria and the multiaxial approach of DSM-III are presented. They were applied to a random sample at 265 case records corresponding to adult and geriatric patients admitted to the INSM from 1982 to 1986. The most frecuent disorders found were: Anxiety States, 15%, Adjustment Disorders, 14% and Dysthymia, 13%. The characteristics of the population that is assisted at the INSM are presented: residents of Lima's northern suburban area, some of them living in slum areas. The sample was conformed by young patients, secondary education, and student and homemaker occupation. The findings are compared with ICD-9 and the differences between both classification systems are commented. The five DSM-III axes were used plus a VI Axis about current functioning.
