RESUMO

Aspergillosis of the paranasal sinuses appears to be relatively rare in occurrence, but there is a growing incidence of it in accordance with the increasing use of antibiotics, steroid hormones, anticancer drugs, and radiation therapy. We have seen 15 cases of aspergillosis of the paranasal sinuses in which computed tomography (CT) was helpful for diagnosis. The characteristic feature of CT findings was the intermixture of high and low density areas in the affected paranasal sinuses, apparently caused by increased X-ray absorption due to calcification. These findings indicate that CT is useful in the preoperative diagnosis of aspergillosis of the paranasal sinuses.

RESUMO

High resolution computed tomography (CT) of the middle ear and mastoid, when properly performed and interpreted, is valuable to the otologic surgeon prior to exploration of the cholesteatomatous ear. Fifty one patients with cholesteatomatous otitis media underwent CT examination of both ears one to four weeks prior to surgery. These CT findings were then compared with operation findings. We analysed sixteen parameters of the anatomical and pathological features of the temporal bone affected by cholesteatoma. In conclusion, a high degree of correct correlation was noted between CT findings and those of the operation. Our study showed the usefulness and accuracy of preoperative computed tomographic study in cholesteatomatous otitis media.

RESUMO

Tuberculosis of the larynx and the tonsil were not relatively uncommon diseases in the past, but they have become rare disease with the advent of effective antituberculous chemotherapy. Especially cases secondary to tuberculosis elsewhere in the body are indeed uncommon. We have recently seen a case of tuberculosis of the larynx associated with that of the tonsil which is thought to have developed secondary to miliary tuberculosis.
