RESUMO

Background/Aims@#Constipation is a common gastrointestinal disorder. Prucalopride is a dihydrobenzofurancarboxamide derivative with gastrointestinal prokinetic activities and is recommended as an appropriate choice in patients unresponsive to laxatives. This study assessed the safety and efficacy of prucalopride in Korean patients with chronic constipation, in whom laxatives were ineffective. @*Methods@#This prospective, non-interventional post-marketing surveillance of prucalopride was conducted from 2012 to 2018 at 28 hospitals in Korea. Adults who received prucalopride for the symptomatic treatment of chronic constipation were included. The patients received 2 mg of prucalopride once daily or 1 mg once daily in patients older than 65 years. The baseline characteristics, adverse events (AEs), and seven-point scale of Clinical Global Impression-Improvement were collected. @*Results@#Of 601 patients, 67.7% were female, and the mean age was 62.3 years. Three hundred patients (49.9%) were older than 65 years. At the baseline, 70.0% of patients reported less than two instances of spontaneous complete bowel movements per week. AEs were reported in 107 patients (17.7%), including headache (3.2%) and diarrhea (2.8%). Seven serious AEs (SAEs) were reported in five patients (0.8%). The SAEs were resolved without complications; there were no cases of death. All SAEs were assessed as ‘unlikely’ causality with prucalopride. In 72.7% of patients, chronic constipation was improved by the prucalopride treatment during the study period. @*Conclusions@#This study demonstrated the promising safety and efficacy profile of prucalopride in clinical practice. Thus, prucalopride should be considered in patients with chronic constipation when bowel symptoms are refractory to simple laxatives.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify patient safety awareness and emergency response ability and affecting factors perceived by nursing homes and home visiting caregivers. METHODS: This study was a descriptive study that conveniently extracts nursing caregivers who care for elderly patients in S and G provinces, Korea. Data collection was done by structural questionnaires from April to May 2018. A total of 204 responses consisting of 103 nursing homes and 101 home visiting caregivers were used for data analysis in SPSS Win 22.0. RESULTS: Patient safety awareness and emergency response ability of nursing homes caregivers with each 4.24±0.50, 74.26±09.57 was each higher than that of the home visiting caregivers with 3.68±0.49, 68.02±12.12 (p < .001). The affecting factors of the patient safety awareness were working place, safety education, and daily average working hours with 12 or more (F = 27.30, p < .001) and that of emergency response ability were number of patients per personnel with 9 or more and emergency situation experience (F=14.00, p < .001). CONCLUSION: These results suggest that it is necessary to develop a safety education program that can share indirectly experience emergency situations that occur on the job site.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to explore the effects of imagery training on outcomes of clinical competence, voluntary practice time and basic nursing skills performance during a core basic nursing skills course. METHODS: The design was a pre-post test design with two groups consisting of 88 nursing 3rd-year students. Clinical competence was assessed with a pre-post test, and basic nursing skills' performance and voluntary practice time were assessed at the post-test point. Data were collected from March, 2016 to June, 2016. RESULTS: The pre-post differences of all subcategories of clinical competence were significantly improved in the experimental group (p.05). The experimental group practiced 1.33 hours more than the control group in voluntary practice. The two groups showed no significant difference in basic nursing skills' performance (p>.05). CONCLUSION: Imagery training during a core basic nursing skills course showed positive effects on nursing students' clinical competence improvement and increase of voluntary practice time.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify the quality of recovery and influential factors on the quality of recovery after cardiac surgery. METHODS: 198 patients undergone cardiac surgery were asked to fill in a self-reported questionnaire about the quality of recovery, anxiety, depression including social support at discharge. The collected data were analyzed with mean, standard deviation, correlation and stepwised multiple regression. RESULTS: The mean scores of quality of recovery at discharge after cardiac surgery was 2.04 on a 3 point scale. Influential factors on the quality of recovery after cardiac surgery were depression(p=.001) and anxiety(p=.027), which disclosed 44.2% of explanation. Depression was the most influential factor. CONCLUSION: The influential factors on the quality of recovery at discharge after cardiac surgery were depression and anxiety. More studies will be required to reduce depression and anxiety in patients undergone cardiac surgery.

RESUMO

Isolated small bowel intussusception accounts for 10% of all pediatric intussusception. It is more common in children older than 2 years of age. Presentation usually is with vomiting and abdominal pain. Currant jelly stool and palpable mass are less frequent than typical intussusception. There are few reported cases of children with transient small bowel intussusception. We describe 3-year-old boy presented with intermittent cyclic crampy abdominal pain for 6 months was diagnosed as having recurrent transient small bowel intussusception by abdominal ultrasonography and small bowel series.
