RESUMO

This study was carried out on total number of 24 New Zealand rabbits to investigate the feasibility of intestinal elongation using an omentum pedicled intestinal segment. Animals were divided into 4 groups to determine the optimum time for sufficient revascularization of the newly fashioned intestinal loop. The study was carried out in 2 laparotomies with intervals ranging from 5 to 8 weeks between both. From the study, it was evident that the omentum could be used successfully for intestinal elongation. The optimum time for sufficient revascularization was 7 weeks after the first laparotomy

RESUMO

Previous studies have shown that dietary supplements of vitamin E or intraperitoneal administration of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose [SCMC] solution reduced postoperative adhesions by approximately 50%. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose [SCMC] [Hercules cellulose gum, grade 7H4F, Food Grade, Hercules Inc., Wilmington, D.E.] to prevent adhesions and to compare this solution with cortisone and vitamin E and to determine whether there is synergistic beneficial effect of vitamin E and SCMC in reducing postoperative adhesions

RESUMO

A total of 240 infants and children having abdominal tumors was admitted to the Pediatric Surgery Unit, Mansoura University Hospital, during the period from 1989 to 1994. Their ages ranged from 1 month to 12 years with a mean age 3.1 years. They included 135 males [56.3%] and 105 females [43.7%]. They were presented mainly by abdominal enlargement with other symptoms varying from simple dyspepsia to acute abdomen. This study discussed 5-year experience in different abdominal tumors in infancy and childhood

RESUMO

This study was a retrospective analysis of seven patients with adrenal gland tumors. Patients with pheochromocytoma presented mainly with headache, persistent hypertension with paroxysmal severe attacks. Three patients with adrenal cortical adenoma presented mainly with trunkal obesity and mild hypertension, the remaining patient was a child with virilizing manifestations. Different methods of investigations were done that included estimation of catecholamines and cortisol levels in blood. Unilateral flank approach with resection of the last rib was done in all patients. The tumor was resected with the least possible manipulations after ligation of the adrenal vessels. Postoperative improvement was noticed in all patients where there was marked sustained reduction in blood pressure in cases of pheochromocytoma, and manifest reduction in body weight and blood pressure in patients with cortical adenoma showed marked amelioration of the virilizing features

RESUMO

Functional results after surgical correction of anorectal anomalies were assessed in 45 patients clinically and manometrically, in addition to 5 control children. The clinical assessment followed Kelly score. Continent patients had marked high pressure zones. Thus, anorectal pressure profile was found to correlate well with continence. Patients with high anomalies had lower pressure zones whatever the operation done if compared to patients with intermediate or low anomalies yet the results varied according to the operation done. Manometry was compared to defecography and was found to be more accurate

RESUMO

The use of bladder mucosa for repair of proximal hypospadias offers several advantages. Twenty-four children suffering from proximal hypospadias, their ages ranged from 4 to 12 years, were included in the study. The repair was completely successful in 18 patients without minor or major complications. However, 2 children developed fistula at the site of the anastomosis and were in need for further closure. Three children developed meatal sticking and stenosis, two of them responded to regular meatal dilation and the 3rd was in need for meatoplasty. One child developed extensive infection and complete wound disruption that was in need for refashioning
