RESUMO

Abstract Erythrina × neillii Mabberley & Lorence, Fabaceae, is a sterile hybrid between E. herbacea L. and E. humeana Spreng. Nothing was traced about its genetic, macro and micromorphology. Therefore, it was deemed of interest to study its botanical characters, in addition to the DNA fingerprint to help in the identification of the plant. The anatomical characters of the old stem and its bark are characterized by the presence of cork cells, bast fibers and sclereids. Pericycle is sclerenchymatous forming crystal sheath. The epidermises of the leaf and young stem are characterized by the presence of anomocytic and paracytic stomata, non-glandular, unicellular and multicellular two armed hairs, and glandular club shaped hair. Calcium oxalate is present in the form of crystal sheath and prisms. Secretory cavities are distributed in the phloem and cortex. Sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) was used as one of the molecular methods to differentiate between the samples of Erythrina. The DNA of Erythrina was extracted and analyzed using seven-mer random primers. Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA were recognized. This characterization allows certification of the authenticity of Erythrina × neillii, in order to provide quality control for the plant.

RESUMO

The estrogenic activity of petroleum ether extract of Citrus medica L. leaves as well as the chemical constituents responsible for the biological activity was studied. The petroleum ether extract proved to retain high estrogenic activity in immature female rats. The extract was saponified and its components (saponifiable part 23% and the unsaponifiable matter 77%) were identified using GC/MS technique. The extract proved to be safe (LD50< 2g/kg.bw). Oral administration of petroleum ether extract of C. medica in ovariectomized immature female Wistar rats for 7 days in a dose of 400 mg/kg resulted in significant increase in the uterine weight (g) (1.7±0.11) when compared with ovariectomized control rats (1.3±0.07). GC/MS analysis of both saponifiable and unsaponifiable matters revealed the presence of thirty three components (28 hydrocarbons and 5 sterols) in the unsaponifiable fraction, the major hydrocarbon was n- Heneicosane (16.7%) while the major sterol was β-sitosterol (4.03%) and 15 components in the saponifiable matter it's major component was hexadecanoic acid (19.93%). As a conclusion petroleum ether extract of Citrus medica L. leaves possess a significant estrogenic activity.

RESUMO

Accelerated atherosclerosis is the major cause of mortality in patients on chronic haemodialysis [HD]. Inflammation and endothelial activation or dysfunction might be the major factors leading to high cardiovascular mortality rate in HD patients. Also, C667T mutation of methyltetrahydrofolate reductase [MTHFR] might be associated with accelerated athcrosclerosis. The present study was designed to clarify the role of inflammation, endothelial activation or dysfunction and genotyping of MTHFR enzyme which affect the level or homocysteine and their relation to carotid artery intima-media thickness [CIMT] as an indicator of atherosclerosis. Forty four [44] chronic haemodialysis [HD] patients and 40 healthy subjects were included in the study. Serum highly sensitive C reactive protein [hs-CRP] and IL-6 were measured as inflammatory markers, soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 [sVCAM-1] was measured as a marker of endothelial activation and dysfunction. Common carotid intimal media thickness [CC-IMT] was assessed by carotid artery ultrasonography. genotyping of MTHFR enzyme which affect the level of homocysteine was analyzed by PCR RFLIP technique. Chronic HD patients had elevated levels of inflammatory markers [hs-CRP and IL-6], enhanced endothelial activation or dysfunction demonstrated by elevated VCAM-1 as compared by healthy controls. Haemodialysis patients had significantly higher CC-IMT levels. There is a significant positive correlation between inflammatory cytokines [hs-CRP and IL-6], and each with VCAM-1 and CC-IMT There is no difference in the genotype of C667T MTHFR found between patients and controls, but this mutation especially the TT genotype is associated with development of atherosclerosis as indicated by the increase of CC-IMT

RESUMO

To compare the results of autonomic function tests obtained from diabetic patients who had no symptoms or signs of somatic or autonomic neuropathy with those obtained from control subjects. We studied 32 diabetic Saudi patients [17 males, 15 females] and 34 control subjects [17 of either gender] at King Khalid University Hospital, Riyadh, in the period 2004-2005. The mean age of patients was 50.3 +/- 5.04, and of controls was 49.9 +/- 5.86 years. In diabetics, the mean duration of the disease was 8.7 +/- 3.1 years [range 5-15 years], and the mean glycated hemoglobin was 7.76 +/- 1.14. The same observer performed the autonomic function tests. In diabetics, the resting heart rate [beats/min] was 80.5 +/- 4.13, mean orthostasis ratio was 1.06 +/- 0.035, mean Valsalva ratio was 1.19 +/- 0.036, mean forced sinus arrhythmia was 12.66 +/- 0.8 beats/min, mean diastolic blood pressure increase in response to isometric exercise was 13.03 +/- 1.36 mm Hg, and sympathetic skin response was present in only 18 [56.3%] out of 32 patients. These results were significantly different from the control group [p<0.001]. Diabetic patients, with no symptoms or signs of neuropathy, can have impaired autonomic function. We consider this subclinical autonomic neuropathy

RESUMO

Hepatitis C virus [HCV] is involved in an increasing number of non hepatic diseases. Mixed cryoglobulinemia [MC] is considered a lymphoproliferative disorder. It is characterized by arthralgia, generalized weakness, purpura and organ involvement such as membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, peripheral neuropathy, vasculitis and chronic liver diseases. Cryoglobulinemia is quite frequent in chronic HCV infection and especially when appropriate techniques of cryoglobulin detection are applied. Its frequency is usually higher in older male cirrhotic patients and who have a longer duration of HCV infection. The term essential mixed cryoglobulinemia [EMC] has been used to describe the syndrome with no evidence of underlying disease. Chronic HCV infection is the main cause [90%] of EMC type II and III with or without clinical or biochemical evidence of liver damage. In addition, HCV was described as a lymphotropic virus and may play a direct role in the development of low grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma which is usually associated with EMC. Aiming to estimate cryoglobulins in patients with CHC viral infection to identify the possible correlation between cryoglobulinemia and CHC viral infection, we conducted this study on 40 patients with CHC viral infection. Another group of 10 normal persons was considered a control group. Among our patients, there were 32.5% positive patients for cryoglobulinemia, those patients had increased incidence of cirrhosis and low C4. We suggested that EMC associated with HCV infection should no longer be referred to as essential but rather as hepatitis C associated with MC. In addition, every patient with chronic HCV infection may have MC, so that serum cryoglobulins and complement components must be evaluated repeatedly during the course of chronic HCV infection for avoiding their complications

RESUMO

164 hypercalcemic patients were examined to determine the co-relation, frequency and mode of presentation of primary hyperparathyroidism. Primary hyperparathyroidism was diagnosed in 11 patients (6.7%). All of them presented late with renal and bony complications. The incidence of primary hyperparathyroidism appears to be lower than that of the western countries, and the introduction of routine serum calcium estimates can be expected to yield more cases of primary hyperparathyroidism especially asymptomatic cases.
