RESUMO

Fibrous dysplasia is a slow growing fibro-osseous tumor, which is infrequent in craniofacial location and very rarely found in paranasal sinuses. Its occurrence is usually in children and young adolescents. The complications common in this location are related to the sinus ostia obstruction, like sinusitis or mucocele formation. Aneurysmal bone cyst formation has also been reported. We present a case of frontoethmoid fibrous dysplasia which extends to the nasal cavity and extraaxial frontal region. The peculiarity about the case is its association with the intradiploic CSF cyst formation, which to best of our knowledge has never been reported before

RESUMO

To compare EMG/NCS with MRI in diagnosis of lumbosacral radiculopathy. Cross-sectional comparative. The study was carried out at Armed Forces Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, for a period of six months, from January 2007 to June 2007. Fifty consenting patients with clinical lumbosacral radiculopathy were included, they underwent MRI and NCS/EMG, and then both procedures were compared for diagnosis of radiculopathy. MRI and NCS/EMG had comparable sensitivity but MRI was less accurately correlated with clinical estimated level of radiculopathy. Both NCS/EMG and MRI are time sensitive investigations which provide different information regarding the pathology. NCS/EMG reveal physiological etiology of radiculopathy, compared to MRI, which gives the anatomical information. Every patient with clinical lumbosacral radiculopathy should undergo NCS/EMG for confirmation of diagnosis. However, when anatomical lesion is suspected, or surgical intervention is planned, MRI should complement it

RESUMO

The study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of ultrasound in rotator cuff tears and to compare it with MRI. Descriptive study. The study was conducted in the radiology department of Combined Military Hospital Rawalpindi from July 2005 to January 2006. Total number of patients was thirty. All of these were above thirty years of age and were referred by clinicians, with shoulder pain for diagnostic workup. Post operative patients were excluded. Ultrasound and Magnetic Resonance Imaging [MRI] were performed on each patient. Same operator performed ultrasound in all patients. Ultrasound [US] and Magnetic Resonance Imaging [MRI] detected equal number of full thickness tears while two partial thickness tears were missed on US. Hypoechoic defect was the most important primary sign while cortical irregularity and fluid in subacromial and subdeltroid busra were the most important secondary signs on US. US was equally effective to MRI in detection of rotator cuff tears. It should be the primary investigation because of its availability, cost effective and real time evaluation provided significant expertise is developed, as it is highly operator dependent

RESUMO

Histological analysis of clinically diagnosed cases of oral leukoplakia for assessment of malignant potential. Observational descriptive study. Biopsies of 113 cases of clinically established oral leukoplakia were assessed for clinical appearance and correlated with histology to determine the frequency of epithelial dysplasia and carcinoma, at Department of Pathology, Dow Medical College, Dr. Ehsanullah's laboratories Pvt. limited and Dr. Tahir laboratory, Taj Medical Complex, Hamdard University Hospital during the period of 2003-2006. The histological spectrum of 113 cases revealed hyperplastic epithelium predominantly in 85 [75.22%] cases. 14[12.38%] cases displayed mild to moderate dysplasia. Severe dysplasia I carcinoma in situ was noted in 5[4.4%] cases and microinvasive carcinoma was detected in 6[5.3%] cases. This study confirms that oral leukoplakia is a precancerous lesion and that certain clinicopathological characteristics indicate greater risk to warrant prompt biopsy examination and aggressive management

RESUMO

Screening of twenty five large volume parenterals including dextrose, electrolytes, mannitol, metronidazole infusions, haemodialysis solution, water for injections and distilled water for the determination of pyrogen using Limulus Amebocyte Lysate [LAL] test has been carried out. Out of different preparations only one metronidazole injection exhibited positive LAL test, which was found pyrogen free with USP rabbit pyrogen test

RESUMO

To determine the spectrum of chronic liver disease and to study the morphology of chronic Viral Hepatitis B and C, a total of 120 patients with a clinico-pathological of Chronic liver disease were studied. Out of these equal number of seropositive cases for hepatitis B and C [n=60 each] the histopathology revealed that; respectively 25% and 6.6% had Chronic Persistent Hepatitis; 13.3% and 10% had Chronic Lobular Hepatitis; 38.3% and 60% had Chronic Active Hepatitis; 15% and 16.6% had Cirrhosis and 8.3% and 6.6 had Hepato-cellular carcinoma. The patients with Chronic Hepatitis C showed more portal lymphoid aggregates [82.6% versus 26%], Steatosis [76% versus 32%], Mallory body like material in hepatocytes [30.4% in HCV positive cases only], and activation of sinusoidal inflammatory cells [58.6% versus 21.7%]. Whereas the patients with Chronic Hepatitis B showed more of ground glass hepatocytes [54% versus 2.1%] multinucleated giant cells [50% of HBV positive cases only], and liver cell dysplasia [26% versus 15.2%]. In conclusion some these histological parameters were useful in diagnosis of chronic liver disease due to hepatitis B and C viruses
