RESUMO

The aim of the study was to evaluate the and effectiveness of caudal anesthesia used for conventional open haemorrhoidectomy and compare the with open haemorrhoidectomy done by general anesthesia. Material and This prospective study was carried out at the department of surgery, Saidu group of teaching hospitals, Swat and surgical department, Tehsil Headquarter hospital, Matta, Swat over a period of 18 months [April 2000-Sep 2001]. Pre and postoperative data of 100 patients was studied to establish the effectiveness of caudal anesthesia. Group 1 included 50 patients operated under caudal anesthesia and group 2 included 50 patients operated under general anesthesia. Age range was between 30 and 70 years. Postoperative bleeding, pain and constipation was less in patients who underwent haemorrhoidectomy with caudal anesthesia as compared with those who underwent general anesthesia. Caudal anesthesia is as effective as general anesthesia for haemorrhoidectomy. This does not have the hazards of general and spinal anesthesia and patients tolerate it very well

RESUMO

To evaluate the darning method of inguinal hernia repair with polypropylene.500 patients of unilateral inguinal hernia were admitted. After thorough investigations, all patients were operated for hernia repair by st and ard procedure using No.-l polypropylene. Patients were operated under local, spinal or general anaesthesia. Patients were followed up at one week, six weeks and six months after operation for wound healing and complications. Out of 500 patients, ranging in age from 20 to 70 years, 300 patients were given spinal anaesthesia, 100 patients [20%] were operated under local anaesthesia. 496 patients were discharged from the hospital on the following day. 3 patients went into urinary retention and one patient had large haemotoma requiring exploration. Recurrence rate was 0.8% [n=4]. Darning methods of inguinal hernia repair with polypropylene is a safe and cheaper method of hernia repair
