RESUMO

Breast hamartoma has a low incidence (0.1-07%). It is a benign lesion of uncertain origin. The main concern about hamartoma is that it can present as either palpable breast lump or apparent breast mass on mammographic examination, and this naturally leads to follow up investigations to rule out possible breast malignancy. Here is a case of a clinically suspected fibroadenoma in a 35 year old female. The histopathological examination proved it to be a hamartoma.

RESUMO

Background: Knowledge of the culture and sensitivity pattern is necessary, for the institution of appropriate empirical antibiotic therapy in orbital abscess. Objective: The objective of this study is to describe culture and sensitivity patterns of specimens from the orbit and surrounding structures. Materials and Methods: Retrospectively the medical records of 56 cases of orbital abscess were reviewed. Results: Cultures were positive in 38/56 (68.8%) orbital specimens and the organisms included Staphylococcus aureus 18, Streptococci 7, Pseudomonas aeruginosa 3, 2 each of Enterobactersp, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Acinetobacter sp. and 1 each of Actinomyces israelii, Diptheroids, Coagulase negative Staphylococcus, Citrobacter freundii, Methicillin-resistant S. aureus and Enterococcus faecalis. Four had polymicrobial infection. Culture of purulent nasal discharge, swabs taken from foci of infection on the face, and blood cultures were done in 26/56, and positive cultures were obtained in 16/26 (61.5%) specimens. In 12 patients, there was a concurrence in the organism cultured from the orbit and from cultures from other sites. Gram-negative organisms were associated with increased ocular morbidity. Conclusion: Gram-positive cocci, especially S. aureus are the most common organisms isolated from orbital abscesses. Infections by Gram-negative organisms were associated with more complications. Empirical intravenous antibiotic therapy should have a broad spectrum of activity effective against a wide range of Staphylococcal organisms and Gram-negative bacilli.

RESUMO

One hundred thirty soil samples from agricultural fields and animal-inhabited areas were examined for the presence of Listeria. The microorganism was identified in 23 (17.7%) samples. L. monocytogenes was detected in 7 samples (5.4%), L. ivanovii in 2 (1.5%), L. innocua in 10 (7.7%) and L. welshimeri in 4 samples (3.1%). Prevalence of Listeria in soil from agricultural fields (17.5%) did not differ considerably from that in the soil and animal-inhabited area (18.0%), but L. ivanovii was isolated only from the latter source. Frequency of occurrence of different species of Listeria differed from place to place.

RESUMO

Dietary fiber isolated as neutral detergent residue from unripe banana altered the concentration of aortic glycosaminoglycans in rats fed cholesterol free and cholesterol diet. Concentration of hyaluronic acid (9.9%), heparan sulphate (53.4%), chondroitin 4-sulphate (32.6%), chondroitin 6-sulphate (17.9%), dermatan sulphate (18.8%) and heparin (10.1%) increased in the aorta in rats fed cholesterol free diet. In rats fed cholesterol diet, concentration of heparan sulphate (23.3%), chondroitin 4-sulphate (9.8%) and heparin (42.4%) increased while hyaluronic acid showed a decrease (29.7%). The activity of beta-glucuronidase (9.5%) and beta-hexosaminidase (19.7%) decreased in the aorta in rats fed cholesterol free diet and given dietary fiber, while only beta-hexosaminidase (19.3%) decreased in rats fed cholesterol diet.

RESUMO

Effect of feeding isolated dietary fiber from M. paradisiaca on the metabolism of carbohydrates in the liver has been studied. Fiber fed rats showed significantly lower levels of fasting blood glucose and higher concentration of liver glycogen. Activity of glycogen phosphorylase, glucose-1-phosphate, uridyl transferase and glycogen synthase was significantly higher while phosphoglucomutase activity showed lower activity. Activity of some glycolytic enzymes, viz. hexokinase and pyruvic kinase was lower. Glucose-6-phosphatase showed higher activity while fructose 1-6 diphosphatase activity was not affected. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase on the other hand showed higher activity. The changes in these enzyme activities have been attributed due to the effect of higher concentration of bile acids produced in the liver as a result of feeding fiber. Evidence for this has been obtained by studying the in vitro effect of cholic acid and chenodeoxy cholic acid.
