Se han reportado cambios en la distribución y frecuencia de los genotipos del virus de hepatitis C (VHC) en algunos países, incluyendo a Venezuela. Analizamos la frecuencia del VHC en nuestro país evaluando un posible cambio en la frecuencia de los genotipos a nivel nacional. Ochocientas nueve muestras de suero de pacientes infectados por VHC provenientes de Caracas y de 11 estados venezolanos, fueron investigadas mediante PCR-RLFP. En 527 identificamos el genotipo 1 (65,1%), 34,4% de los pacientes mostraron genotipo 2 mientras genotipos 3, 4 y 5 fueron altamente infrecuentes. De 316 pacientes infectados con genotipo 1, el 56% mostró dinteles de ARN VHC <600.000 UI/mL y 44% viremia mayor que este dintel. Demostramos que la frecuencia de los genotipos del VHC permanece inalterada en Venezuela, con predominio del genotipo 1b y cerca de la mitad con carga viral elevada.
Changes in hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotypes distribution and frequency have been reported in some countries including Venezuela. We analyze the frequency of the HCV genotypes in our country evaluating a possible distribution change at national level. Eight hundred and nine sera of patients infected by HCV coming from Caracas and of 11 Venezuelan states were investigated by means of PCR-RFLP. In 527 sera we identified the genotype 1 (65.1%), 34.4% showed genotype 2 while genotypes 3, 4 nd 5 were highly uncommon. Of 316 patients infected with genotype 1, 56% showed levels of HCV RNA < 600.000 IU/mL and 44% levels superior to this cut-off. We demonstrate that the distribution and frequency of HCV genotypes remains unaffected in Venezuela, with prevalence of the genotype 1b and near the half with high viral load.
