RESUMO

The change of the vertical dimension is of fundamental importance to the orthodontist. However, the choice between the two methods of treatment, extraction versus nonextraction, is not clear. It is not verified that the extraction method decreases vertical dimension, or nonextraction methods result in an increase in vertical dimension. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the changes of vertical dimension of face after the orthodontic treatment with standard edgewise technique, and to compare them in relation to facial types and bicuspid extraction. The subjects consisted of 165 orthodontic patients (77 of adolescents, 88 of adults), and was divided into vertical nonextraction (VN) group, vertical extraction (VE) group, horizontal nonextraction (HN) group, horizontal extraction (HE) group. Pre-and Post-treatment cephalograms were taken with standard method, traced, and digitized for each subject. The comparison of the measurements were statistically executed with Student's t-test. The results were as follows : 1. The facial height and molar height were increased after orthodontic treatment in the all groups. 2. No significant difference was found in the facial height change between the vertical and horizontal groups. 3. No significant difference was found in the facial height change between the extraction and nonextraction groups. 4. As the upper molars were extruded in adolescents group and lower molars were extruded in adults group, lower anterior facial height (LAFH) was increased. 5. None of the pretreatment variables correlates to the change of lower anterior facial height (LAFH).

RESUMO

Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) is a main cause of failure in retinal reattachment surgery. There have been many studies about the inhibition of proliferative vitreoretinophthy with several drugs. Authors investigated the inhibitory effect of proliferative vitreoretinopathy and retinal toxicity with various concentration of daunorubicin after intravitreal injection into the eyes of the pigmented rabbit. 7 pigment rabbit (11eyes) were used as subjects. After lensectomy and vitrectomy, control group was injected dermal fibroblast and F-BSS, and treatment group was injected dermal fibroblast and 5, 10, 15, 30 nmol Daunorubicin. At two weeks after intravitreal injection, both group were enucleated and examined with gross finding, light--microscopy, and electronmicroscopy. In all control group, proliferative vitreoretinopathy was found, but only preretinal membrane formation was found in 5, 10 nmol Daunorubicin injected group. In 15 nmol Daunorubicin injected group, the retina structure was preserved normally. In 30 nmol Daunorubicin injected group, the retinal outer segment was degenerated in microscopic finding. These results show that Daunorubicin has a potent effect on proliferative vitreoretinopathy, especially in 15 nmol, but retinal toxicity is suspected in marethan 30 nmol.

RESUMO

We measured the near point of accommodation in 59 patients (59 eyes), who were implanted with 3M diffractive multifocal intraocular lens, in order to evaluote the pseudoaccommodation Average amount of pseudoaccommodation were 3.65 diopter (standard deviation was 1.75) and it was greater than that of monofocal intraocular lens Far vision and age did not affect the pseudoaccommodation. Near visual acuity alone appeared to have a positive correlation with pseudoaccommodation.

RESUMO

We followed up the 100 patients (104 eyes) who had undergone cataract extraction and PCL implantation into the bag with 3M diffractive multifocal intraocular lensee for at least 2 month, in order to evaluate the function of this lens. 92 eyes (88.5%) had the far corrected vision more than 0.5 and 94 eyes (90.4%) had the near vision with far correction more than J3. We added additional adds (-0.25, +0.25, +0.50, +0.75D) in order to ascertain the adequacy of +3.50D add in this lens and it was found that the additional add of +0.75D was most preferred. This means that more add is necessary for near vision. There was, also, no more remarkable side effects or difficulties associated with this lenses. So, multifocal Intraocular lenses enable good near vision without any severe disadvatages but the amount of near add is cuntroversial.

RESUMO

A solitary lid mass was identified as a primary solitary plasmacytoma. A 71 year old male presented with a left upper lid mass. The mass was found to be firmly intermingled with the underlying tarsal plate. A total excision was successfully performed and the lid margin was reconstructed with a good cosmetic result. There were no positive findings in the systemic work-up. The light microscopic findings suggest that the mass is of tarsal plate origin. It is the first case of plasmacytoma of tarsal plate origin presented as a lid mass.

RESUMO

Pseudoexfoliation syndrome is characterized by the presence of gray-white flakes on the pupillary borders and anterior lens capsule, increased trabecular meshwork pigmentation, and association with glaucoma. We describe 3 patients with this syndrome seen at Asan Meidcal Center Department of Ophthalmology in 1989, and we focus on their clinical features and management. We believe that patients with this syndrome are not as rare in Korea as has been thought, judging by scant report of cases in the past.

RESUMO

We evaluated one of the new non-contact tonometers, the Pulsair non-contact tonometer, to assess its accuracy and reliability. Measurements on 101 eyes were used to assess its accuracy against Goldmann tonometry measurements, and another 24 eyes were used to assess its reliability (reproducibility). The results showed the instrument to be highly accurate and reliable in measurement.
