RESUMO

The skin window test was used to study the state of immunity in patients with Streptococcal pyogenes tonsillitis associated with rheumatic myocarditis and arthritis. It was found that deficiency of the cellular immune response can be considered as a contributing factor in the development of rheumatic arthritis or myocarditis. Application of this test in patients with chronic Streptococcal pyogenes tonsillitis can be used as a diagnostic tool for these complications

RESUMO

Thirty patients with different pathological lesions of the paranasal sinuses were studied to show the value of CT in the diagnosis of these lesions. It was found that CT provides better soft tissue discrimination, demonstration of minor degrees of bone erosion and a reliable, noninvasive method of pretreatment evaluation

RESUMO

The ultrastructural changes in the human mast cells in patients with allergic rhinitis were studied before, immediately after treatment and one month after cessation of treatment with ketotifen. Mast cells were full of granules after treatment, which started degranulation after cessation of treatment. This proves the value of ketotifen as mast cell stabilizer in the treatment of allergic rhinitis patients

RESUMO

Sixty patients with external otitis were studied to define the different clinical patterns, establish the relative incidence of bacteria and fungi, and to investigate the role of some predisposing factors in the development of otitis externa in Alexandria. Associated skin disease was found to be the most predisposing factor and Staph. aureus was the commonest isolated [46%], Pseudomonas aeruginosa [8.3%] and fungi [25%]

RESUMO

120 infants at risk admitted to NICU were screened to detect the possibility of hearing loss using BERA. The incidence of hearing loss was found to be 0.83%, which emphasized the early detection of hearing impairment for timely intervention. The use of BERA can reveal auditory impairment in neonates. False positive rates for normal, healthy term babies were insignificant, which recommended its use for early auditory evaluation

RESUMO

The effect of diabetes mellitus on the hearing function was studied. Thirty known diabetic patients and 30 control subjects of same age and sex were chosen and investigated by pure tone audiometry, speech discrimination, acoustic reflex threshold and decay. A retrocochlear sensorineural hearing loss was found as a result of the diabetic state with an incidence of 63.3%
