RESUMO

Deep palmoplantar warts (Myrmecia), which are induced by human papilloma virus type I (HPV-1) commonly occur on the palms and soles, but occasionally are found on the lateral aspects and tips of the finger and toes. We met 12-year-old girl, who presented with round shape hyperkeratotic erythematous to brownish colored papule on the Achilles tendon area. The skin lesion was considered clinically as a verruca vulgaris, but confirmed finally as myrmecia by histopathologic findings. It is very rare and interesting case, which is presented in unusual site.

RESUMO

A 45-year-old woman presented with keloidal nodules induced by moxibustion, which is made from mugwort powder. Keloids are benign hyperproliferative tumors of dermal connective tissue which usually result from excessive responses to cutaneous trauma in predisposed individuals. The lesions tend to occur on the upper part of the body as firm, raised tumors with a glassy surface and well demarcated borders. There are several available methods of treatment including intralesional corticosteroid injection, cryotherapy, surgical excision, laser therapy, pressure, radiotherapy and interferon-alpha injection. We report a case of a moxibustion-induced keloid in a 45-year-old female patient, who presented with multiple, round-shaped, erythematous to skin-colored, firm, cicatricial nodules on the moxibustion-applied sites.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Although sun-caps are widely used to shun hazardous solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation in Korea, little is known about their protective efficacy. OBJECTIVE: We tried to measure and compare sun-cap protection from UV radiation. METHODS: Seventeen commercially available sun-caps (products 1~17) were evaluated against UV-protection by spectrophotometerically measuring absorption and transmission spectra, percent protection of solar UVB and UVA photometerically, and solar UV-spectra spectroradiometerically. RESULTS: The absorption and transmission spectra of 17 different sun-caps were different, and they were not related to either price or their stated UV-guarantee. Percent protection showed some correlation, particularly with that of UVB. Protection against solar UV-spectra was similar to that of the absorption ond transmission spectra. CONCLUSION: Protection of sun-caps were highly varied, and this was not related to their price or stated UV- guarantee. Among three evaluation methods, absorption and transmission spectra seemed to be more objective. Further studies would be necessary to provide proper information and guidelines to dermatologists and consumers on the UV- protection of sun-caps.

RESUMO

Leukoplakia is a fixed, predominantly white-lesion of the mucosa. It is most often seen on the oral and anogenital mucosa. Leukoplakia should be biopsied to determine the true histopathologic diagnosis. Verruciform xanthoma is composed of asymptomatic, usually solitary, flat plaques or warty lesions. They may vary in color from gray to pink or yellow. Its pathogenesis is still unknown and usual site is the oral cavity. Histopathologically, it is characterized by verrucous epidermal hyperplasia with aggregates of foam cells in the dermal papillae. A review of literature indicated that verruciform xanthoma presenting as a whitish plaque on the lower lip was very rare. We describe a 70-year-old woman with verruciform xanthoma who presented with a whitish plaque on her lower lip.

RESUMO

Schwannoma (neurilemmoma) is a common, benign, nerve-sheath tumor, and has classically been described as having a biphasic histologic appearance with alternating areas of cellular (Antoni A) and loose myxoid (Antoni B) tissues. Neuroblastom-like schwannoma is an extremely rare variant, which shows giant rosette-mimicking neuroblastoma. It must be differentiated from neuroblastoma, hyalizing spindle-cell tumors with giant rosettes, peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors, dendritic cell neurofibroma with pseudorosette, and malignant changes of schwannoma. To the best of our knowledge, there have been no reports of neuroblastoma-like schwannoma in Korea. We herein report a case of neuroblastoma-like schwannoma, along with a review of pertinent literature.

RESUMO

We report a case of type IIa hyperlipoproteinemia associated with xanthoma planum and xanthoma striatum palmare. The laboratory findings showed increased serum cholesterol and triglyceride on the lipid profile, and an increased beta fraction on electrophoresis of lipoprotein, suggesting type IIa hyperlipoproteinemia. The biopsy specimens of orange yellow colored plaques on the left axillary area of a 54-year-old female showed characteristic findings of xanthoma.

RESUMO

Pityriasis amiantacea is a scaly condition of the scalp. This is usually seen in women or children. It is associated with various underlying primary dermatoses, such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, tinea capitis, pyoderma, pediculosis, alopecia areata, lichen simplex chronicus and lichen planus. To our knowledge, there have been no other reports of pityriasis amiantacea in Korea. With scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image of the disease, we report a typical case of pityriasis amiantacea.
