RESUMO

PURPOSE: The research was done to investigate the effectiveness of 2D bony morphometry and microstructure of micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) on the osteoporotic bony change. We performed the bone morphometric analysis of proximal femur in ovariectomized rabbits with BMD and micro-CT examination. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-one female (Newzealand, about 16 weeks old, 2.9-3.4 kg) rabbits were used. Three rabbits were sacrificed on the day when experiment began (Baseline). The remaining 18 rabbits were divided into two groups. One group was ovariectomized bilaterally (OVX) and the other animals were subjected to sham operation (Sham). Bone specimens were obtained from the right and left femur of sacrificed rabbits. At intervals of 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 months respectively, BMD tests were performed on the proximal femur by using PIXImus 2 (GE Lunar Co. USA), 2-dimensional bone morphometric analysis by custome computer program and 2D / 3D bone structure analysis by micro-CT (Skyscan1072, Antwerpen, Belgium). Statistical analysis was carried out for the correlation between bone morphometry , micro-CT and BMD RESULTS: BV/TV, Tb.Th, Tb.N of micro-CT parameters showed higher values in sham group than OVX group. N.Nd/Ar.RI, N.NdNd, N.NdTm, N. TmTm, PmB/Ar.RI, 3-D BoxSlope of 2D morphometric parameters showed higher values in Sham group than OVX group. The micro-CT parameters of Tb.Sp, Tb.N were statistically significant correlated with BMD respectively. Several 2D morphometric parameters were statistically significant correlated with BMD respectively. CONCLUSION: Several parameters of 2D bony morphometry and micro-CT showed effective aspects on the osteoporotic bony change.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Bony strength is dependent on bone mass and bony structure. So this study was designed to investigate the relationship between the bone mass and bony trabecular characteristics. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Study subjects were 51 females (average age 68.6 years) and 20 males (average age 66.4 years). Bone mineral density (BMD, grams/cm2) of proximal femur was measured by a dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Regions of interest (ROIs) were selected from the digitized radiographs of proximal femur. A customized computer program processed morphologic operations (MO) of ROIs. 44 skeletal variables of MO were calculated from ROIs on the Ward's triangle and greater trochanter of femur. WHO BMD classes were predicted by MO variables of the same ROI. Classification and Regression Tree analysis was used for calculating weighted kappa values, sensitivity and specificity of MO. RESULTS: The discriminating factors of morphologic operation were branch point, branch point [per cm sq]. Age also played important role in distinguishing osteoporotic classes. The sensitivity of MO at Ward's triangle and Greater Trochanter was 91.8%, 65.6%, respectively. The specificity of MO was 100% at Ward's triangle and Greater Trochanter. CONCLUSION: Bony trabecular characteristics obtained using radiological bone morphometric analysis seem to be related to bone mass.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the characteristics of the newly marketed, Insight dental X-ray film. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Kodak Ultraspeed (DF-58), E-speed, Agfa Dentus M2, and Kodak Insight (IP-21) films were radiographed using a Trophy intra-oral radiographic machine. 10 step exposure times were prepared and each step exposure was monitored using a FH 40G (ESM Eberline Instruments) dosimeter for each of the 4 types of intra-oral film. All films were manually processed and the radiographic densities at 6 sites of each processed film were measured, and the characteristic curves of each of the 4 types intra-oral films were created utilizing these dosimetric data and radiographic densities, based on ISO 5779. The film contrast, speed, and base plus fog density of Insight film were compared with those of the 3 other films examined in this experiment. RESULTS: E-speed film showed greatest average gradients followed by Insight film. E-speed and Ultraspeed film showed great average gradients at low density levels. Insight film showed the fastest speed followed by E-speed, Dentus M2 and Ultraspeed film. Dentus M2 film showed greatest base plus fog density level followed by Insight film. CONCLUSION: Kodak Insight film showed fastest film speed with comparable film contrast on characteristic curve.

RESUMO

Nowadays in the field of plastic surgery, operations with no general anesthesia have been much increased, using daily surgery center. We used "Propofol TCI system" to control exact target concentration of conscious sedation and to reduce any systemic complication of the other local anesthetics. Twenty of ASA Class I or II patients were scheduled for elective surgery using Diprifusor(R) TCI system at 0.8-1.9 ug/ml target concentration. We estimated the proper target concentration, time of awakening, postoperative patient satisfaction and presence of postoperative amnesia. All the patients was satisfied except one patients who underwent nasal tip plasty. The target concentration of the conscious sedation varies with age and the type of operation but average concentration was 1.4-1.6 ug/ml. The average time of awakening, which we estimated by the time of eye opening was 2.6 minutes. Postoperative systemic complication and unusual vital sign were not present. We present here our satisfactory results using propofol infused by TCI(Target controlled infusion) system. This system is called 'Diprifusor(R)' and has a benefit of excellent sedative effect, low complication rate, safety, and rapid awakening time which enables the patient to return to his normal life cycle.

RESUMO

A 16-year-old female was admitted to Wonkwang dental hospital with a chief complaint of painful ulceration on right buccal mucosa around mandibular 3rd molar area. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed relative large soft tissue mass on the infratemporal fossa and masseter muscle region. By the feature of T1-weighted and T2-weighted of MR imaging, we suspected this mass as a kind of myogenic sarcoma. Histopathological and immunohistochemical studies established a definitive diagnosis of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. A review of the literature was also presented.
