RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess and compare the clinical and radiographic outcomes of guided tissue regeneration therapy for human periodontal intrabony defects using two different collagen membranes: a porous nonchemical cross-linking collagen membrane (NC) and a bilayer collagen membrane (BC). METHODS: Thirty subjects were randomly assigned and divided into the following 3 groups: a test group (NC+BM), in which a NC was used with xenograft bone mineral (BM), a positive control group (BC+BM), in which a BC was used with xenograft BM, and a negative control group (BM), in which only xenograft BM was used. The following clinical measurements were taken at baseline and 3 months after surgery: plaque index, gingival index, probing pocket depth, gingival recession, and clinical attachment level. Radiographic analysis was performed at baseline, 1 week and 3 months after surgery. RESULTS: Membrane exposure was not observed in any cases. Significant probing depth reduction, attachment-level gain and bone fill were observed for both test and control groups compared to baseline at 3 months after surgery (P0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Within the limitations of this study, the results suggest that both NC and BC were comparable in terms of clinical and radiographic outcomes for the treatment of periodontal intrabony defects in human subjects.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to explore root shape abnormalities, to investigate the influence of root form abnormalities on periodontal attachment loss, and to gather basic data to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of aggressive periodontitis. METHODS: From January 2010 to June 2012, a survey was conducted of all 3,284 periodontitis patients who visited the Department of Periodontology, Daejeon Dental Hospital, Wonkwang University School of Dentistry. Clinical parameters (probing depth, periodontal attachment loss, missing teeth) were measured and a radiographic examination was performed at the baseline. We classified the root shape abnormality of bicuspids and molars based on Meng classification. RESULTS: The periodontal attachment loss was the highest at the maxillary first molar (6.03 mm). The loss of the second molar was prominent. Type V deformity was shown to be the most common in the second maxillary and mandibular molars (P<0.05). Type V root shape was associated with the highest attachment loss (P=0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Considering the small population and limited design of this study, definitive conclusions cannot be drawn. We suggest larger scale, methodologically more sophisticated studies that include normal controls and chronic periodontitis patients to clarify whether root form abnormalities are a potential risk factor for aggressive periodontitis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There are several options for choosing a graft in CABG, we routinely chose LIMA for LAD and great saphenous vein for other target vessels. To evaluate the posoperative graft patency, we have studied the results using a 16 slices multi-detector computed tomography. MATERIAL NAD METHOD: From 1995 to 2003, 80 CABG patients who did not complain any event of MACE have been examined by 16-MDCT, mostly in an out patient clinic. RESULT: There were 61 men and 19 women. MDCT was used as early as 7 days to 9 years postoperatively with a median follow-up period of 6.5 years, and mean follow-up peiod of 31.5+/-25.4 months. Mean age was 58.4+/-12.6 years old in men and 61.5+/-17.2 years old in women. 72/80 patients received LIMA to LAD, and all other patients received vein grafts for bypass. The target vessel of vein grafts were 8 in LAD, 47 in RCA, 60 in diagonals, and 61 in obtuse marginals. Among them 42 sequential anastomoses were performed. The mean graft number was 3.1+/-1.8 grafts. 5 year graft patency rate of each grafts was as followings; 93.1% in LIMA to LAD, 94.9% in vein to diagonals, 92.1% in vein to obtuse marginals, and 79.2% in vein to RCA. Sequential grafting showed better graft patency than the isolated grafting (95.2% vs 78.7~95.0%). CONCLUSION: In this study, CABG with LIMA and saphenous veins showed satisfactory longterm results. 16-MDCT provided good images for follow-up study after CABG. Additionally, as radiologic tools (64-MDCT, MRI) improve more in the future, they can be used for diagnosing preoperative anatomical coronary disease as well as cardiac functions.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study was undertaken to compare the mental and motor development, unsing Bayley Developmental Scale, during infancy(6-8 months of age) according to the choice of feeding, either breast milk of formula, as well as to evaluate its influence on physical growth. METHODS: The study population was 43 normal infants between 6 and 8 months of age, of birth at gestational ages between 37 and 42 weeks, and with birth weights greater or equal to 2500g and below 4000g, excluding high risk infants who were liable for poor neurological prognosis. The breast-fed group was defined as those whoe were breast-fed for at least 3 months after birth. Bayley Developmental Test was performed using Bayley Scales of Infant Development(BSID) test kt. To obtain the data for the analysis of factors influencing the choice of feeding, we used questionnaires. We also measured height, weight, and head circumference for the evaluation of physical growth. RESULTS: We analysed statistically the influence of the educational status of mother or father, the occupational status of mother, birth rank, sex and the mode of delivery on the choice of fedding, but there were no factors causing and significant difference between the breast-fed group(n=22) and the formula-fed group(n=21). The MDI's of the breast-fed and the formula-fed were 101.0 and 103.0, respectively, while the PDI's were 104.2 and 107.0, respectively, There was no statistical difference. The mean height, weight, and head circumference were greater in the breast-fed group but wighout statistical significance. CONCLUSIONS: We may cautiously conclude from the given results that the choice of feeding would not have a great impact on the growth and development of infants.

RESUMO

From April to September 1992, 40 infants with age 6 months to 8 months who had been born in Yongdong Severanve Hospital were studied for evaluation of their development using Bayley developmental test. The result obtained were as follow: 1) Mean mental developmental index(MDI) is higher than mean psychomotor developmental index (PDI) and the values are 101.9+/-8.2 and 105.5+/-9.8 respectively. 2) As age increases, both raw score are increased but mean standard scores are decreased and there is statistical significance in PDI 3) The correlation coefficient of age and psychomotor scale is 0.77 and that of age and mental scale is 0.83. 4) Mean correlation coefficient between PDI and MDI is 0.44 and correlation coefficient in 6 months is 0.54 and it decreased to 0.31 in 7,8 months. 5) Among the physical measurement indices, there is high correlation between height and weight but not with head circumference. 6) There is no statistical significance between each developmental scale with mode of delivery and mother' working status.
