RESUMO

Detailed investigations on the Nubia sandstones in some exposures south of Safga at Wadi Safaga and Wadi Abu- Shiqili, Red Sea coast revealed that they represented by quartz arenites, composed mainly of medium to fine, very well sorted to moderately sorted components. The textural characteristics exhibited by the investigated sandstones strongly suggest that beach and aeolian conditions were most probably the dominating factors controlling transportation and accumulation of the investigated sandstones. The mineralogical composition of the studied sandstones reflect their derivation from acidic igneous rocks [granite and granodiorite] and to lesser extent from metamophic sources, as well as from recycling of the nearby sedimentary rocks. The sandstones under investigation have suffered some diagenetic alterations of which the paragenetic sequences, [as reflected from the petrographic and scanning electron microscopic studies] is;compaction followed by cementation by authigenic quartz, clay minerals and then iron oxy-hydroxides cement
