Objective: The aim of this study was to delineate the profile of users in the waiting list for specialized endodontic dental care in two Dental Specialty Centers (DSC) of the city of Curitiba, Paraná. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, data from 7,072 users were collected and classified according to gender, age, Sanitary District (SD), and date of entry in the waiting list. Data were submitted to Chi-square tests for independence, followed by Marascuilo's adjusted residuals test. Results: Of the users on the waiting list surveyed, 63.0% were women. The prevalent age group was 15- to 34 years (p<0.05). Statistical difference was found regarding attendance at the SD (p<0.05). The SD Matriz had the lowest frequency of inclusion in the waiting list compared to the others; SD Bairro Novo (13.5%), Cidade Industrial de Curitiba (13.7%), Boa Vista (14.5%), Boqueirão (14.8%) and Pinheirinho (15.2%) presented the highest frequencies. Finally, regarding the time series attendances, a significant difference between the months was identified (p <0.01). Conclusion: The profile of users found in the waiting list for endodontic care in Curitiba, during the analyzed period, has a higher prevalence of women, between 15 and 34 years old, and unequally distributed among the SD and months of the year, the latter being the result of actions of the Municipal Health Office.

RESUMO

Introduction and Objective: Tooth decay is one of the most common chronic oral diseases found in industrial countries and is a multifactorial disease which has sugar as a key dietary factor. The amount of saliva concentration and presence of cariogenic bacteria will favor the development of caries. Because of this, the aim of this study was to collect and analyze data on oral alterations referred to tooth decay, oral pH changes, and changes of the oral microbiota in two distinct groups of workers. Material and methods: 30 individuals belonging to two different groups of workers: group A (GA) - workers who maintain daily contact with the confectionery; group B (GB) - workers who do not have such contact. Saliva collection was done by analysis of the salivary pH in both groups, as well as cultivation of Lactobacillus spp and S. mutans. We also evaluate the dental status of individuals belonging to the two groups through the DMFT index. Results: After the examinations of 30 workers (17 from the GA [9 men and 8 women] and 13 in the GB [7 men and 6 women]), the mean DMFT of the individuals in the group A and group B, was 7.41 (SD 5.14) 7.08 (SD 5.56), respectively, without statistically significant differences (p < 0.05). The count of S. mutans and Lactobacillus spp, was not statistically significant. Conclusion: There was no statistically significant relationship between presence of dental caries and the fact that workers are in contact with sugar because they work on candy food industry, but new studies are needed for more precise research.

RESUMO

Introduction: The technical and scientific evolution is the greatest advance in dentistry since its regulation with the law 5.081/1966; however it is worth remembering that constant modernization of treatments brings along a proportional increase on the dentist's responsibilities with his patient. The professional should always keep in mind that along with his hand ability, innovative techniques and the best material applied there is Deontology evaluating three areas: civil, ethical-administrative and criminal. It is the dentist's obligation to follow and respect the deontological issue in a world where lawsuits against peers have increased exponentially. Objective and Conclusion: The presented study reports the relations in the Brazilian penal code concerning to criminal responsibility of the health professionals, analyzing the dental behaviors which, once applied, configure criminal types, subjecting the agent to the prosecution and trial of criminal justice. A little known subject hardly ever discussed in dentistry.

RESUMO

Introduction and objective: The aim of this study was to verify the professionals' perception about the accessibility to dental care establishments for three types of patients with special needs: Diabetes, AIDS, and Cerebral Paralysis patients, in the city of São Paulo. Material and methods: This was a descriptive, cross-sectional study with a non probabilistic sample. For the analysis, 107 dental care establishments were selected and divided into two categories (private and insurance). Each one of the establishments was randomly selected from a list containing a total of 3,234 private and 2,015 insurance establishments. The information for the study was based on phone conversations, when a semi-structured interview was accomplished to verify the accessibility for AIDS, Diabetes, and Cerebral Paralysis special need patients. The analysis of the interviews' content was executed according to the methodology of Lefèvre and Lefèvre (2000) and in agreement with the central idea. Results: From the total of participants, 55.14% were female and 53.27% worked at a private clinic. In relation to the patients' accessibility, 96.26% had already treated Diabetes patients, 55.14% AIDS patients, and 28.97% Cerebral Paralysis patients. Conclusion: It can be concluded that concerning to Diabetes patients, the main difficulty is the clinical practice, mainly related to problems in blood coagulation. For Cerebral Paralysis patients, the difficulties were related to personnel training, establishment structure, and also clinical practice. For AIDS patients, although difficulties in clinical practice were mentioned, prejudice still seemed to be the major difficulty.
