RESUMO

Perilla frutescens is a traditional medicinal and edible plant widely distributed in China and enjoys an extensive usage. P. frutescens contains multiple essential oils, which are composed of monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, and their oxygen-containing derivatives. Compared with other parts of P. frutescens, Perillae Folium produce more oils, with volatile oils as the main constituents. There are many active substances in the volatile oils from Perillae Folium, mainly including perillaldehyde, perillaketone, perillaalcohol, D-limonene, β-caryophylene, etc. Such factors as germplasm, growth environment, extraction method, cultivation time, and harvest period all can trigger changes in volatile oil constituents and content from Perillae Folium. The volatile oils from Perillae Folium have diverse pharmacological effects like anti-oxidation, anti-bacteria, anti-inflammation, vasodilation, anti-tumor, and anti-depression, implying its high clinical application value. However, the chemical constituents in volatile oils from Perillae Folium are complex and unstable and their pharmacological activities are affected by many factors, so the safety and effectiveness of clinical medication fail to be guaranteed, which may has impeded the rational and effective use of these volatile oils. Many scholars in China and abroad have conducted a lot of research on the volatile oils from Perillae Folium, but there is currently no systematic and comprehensive research report on the chemical constituents of volatile oils from Perillae Folium and their pharmacological effects. This paper reviewed the relevant domestic and foreign literature, analyzed the development status of volatile oils from Perillae Folium, and summarized their extraction process, chemical constituents, and pharmacological actions, aiming to provide a reference for their further development, clinical application, and risk assessment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND@#It is crucial to differentiate accurately glioma recurrence and pseudoprogression which have entirely different prognosis and require different treatment strategies. This study aimed to assess the diagnostic accuracy of dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) as a tool for distinguishing glioma recurrence and pseudoprogression.@*METHODS@#According to particular criteria of inclusion and exclusion, related studies up to May 1, 2019, were thoroughly searched from several databases including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Chinese biomedical databases. The quality assessment of diagnostic accuracy studies was applied to evaluate the quality of the included studies. By using the "mada" package in R, the heterogeneity, overall sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic odds ratio were calculated. Moreover, funnel plots were used to visualize and estimate the publication bias in this study. The area under the summary receiver operating characteristic (SROC) curve was computed to display the diagnostic efficiency of DCE-MRI.@*RESULTS@#In the present meta-analysis, a total of 11 studies covering 616 patients were included. The results showed that the pooled sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic odds ratio were 0.792 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.707-0.857), 0.779 (95% CI 0.715-0.832), and 16.219 (97.5% CI 9.123-28.833), respectively. The value of the area under the SROC curve was 0.846. In addition, the SROC curve showed high sensitivities (>0.6) and low false positive rates (<0.5) from most of the included studies, which suggest that the results of our study were reliable. Furthermore, the funnel plot suggested the existence of publication bias.@*CONCLUSIONS@#While the DCE-MRI is not the perfect diagnostic tool for distinguishing glioma recurrence and pseudoprogression, it was capable of improving diagnostic accuracy. Hence, further investigations combining DCE-MRI with other imaging modalities are required to establish an efficient diagnostic method for glioma patients.

RESUMO

@#Objective To analyze the treatment outcome and related influencing factors of Tibet- an nationality new smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis patients in Qinghai Province,so as to provide evidence for tuberculosis control and treatment among Tibetan population. Methods Statistical analysis was conducted on 5 564 Tibetan nationality new smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis cases in Qinghai province who were reported in the China Tuberculosis Information Management System and approved to receive treatment from 2008 to 2017. The main influencing factors were detected by unconditional Logistic regression model analysis, dependent variable was successful treatment or not, independent variables were other factors related to the treatment outcome. Results The treatment success rate of Tibetan nationality new smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis cases was 87. 1% ( 4 848 /5 564) ,and the adverse outcome rate was 12. 9% ( 716 /5 564) . Unconditional Logistic regression model analysis indicated that non-full- course supervision management, living in agricultural and pastoral area, having severe disease, floating population, and age older than 60 years were risk factors of adverse outcome. The odds ratio( OR) 95% confidence interval( CI) of the above risk factors were 13. 044( 10. 671-15. 944) ,2. 305( 1. 703-3. 119) , 2. 090( 1. 346-3. 243) ,1. 967( 1. 443-2. 682) ,and 1. 909( 1. 410-2. 586) . Clinical consultation, farmers and herdsmen were protective factors. The OR( 95% CI) were 0. 451( 0. 375-0. 543) ,and 0. 786( 0. 627- 0. 985) . Conclusions Treatment success rate of Tibetan nationality new smear positive pulmonary tuberculosis cases was low. Therefore, the directly observed treatment short-course ( DOTS) strategy should be strictly implemented and the full-course supervision management should be strengthened to improve the treatment success rate. More attention should be paid to the elderly, severe, floating, agricultural and pastoral populations among the Tibetan population.

RESUMO

Volatile oil of traditional Chinese medicine (VOTCM) is a plant volatile component obtained through distillation or supercritical fluid extraction. The volatile oil is rich in terpenes and phenylpropanoids, with many different effect. It is not only widely used in healthcare products, but also has a variety of pharmacological effect, such as analgesia, antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor effect. Malignant tumor is an important threat to human health. At present, the drugs commonly used in clinical treatment of tumors are expensive with certain toxic and side effect. Although new treatment technologies are also being promoted step by step, they have higher treatment costs than traditional chemotherapies, and the long-term efficacy remained to be further confirmed. The effect of volatile oil of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) on cancer is receiving more and more attention. In particular, it has a significant inhibitory effect on lung, liver, colon, and stomach cancer. Specifically, it can not only reduce the side effect of chemotherapy drugs, but also effectively prolong or stop the tumor recurrence, with special effects in treatment and adjuvant treatment. At the same time, various anti-tumor mechanisms of volatile oils have been discovered, such as inducing tumor cell apoptosis, inhibiting tumor blood vessel formation, inhibiting tumor cell proliferation, inducing tumor cell differentiation, interfering with multidrug resistance, and regulating the body's immune function. However, there are still some problems in the basic research, achievement transformation, and product development of volatile oil of TCM, which restricts its clinical and daily application. This paper summarizes the antitumor mechanism of volatile oil of TCM by consulting relevant domestic and foreign literatures, analyzes the current situation of volatile oils, and proposes improvement directions for its problems and development, in the expectation of laying the foundation for the research of volatile oil of TCM in anti-tumor research.

RESUMO

Leukemia is a hematopoietic hyperplastic disease with an increasing incidence year by year, involving bone marrow and lymphatic system. The disease is complex and a highly heterogeneous disease, including a variety of subtypes, with difficulties in treatment and a poor prognosis. Currently, retinoic acid and its derivatives, arsenic are commonly used in clinical treatment as leukemia cell differentiation inducers. However, their clinical range of treatment is mostly restricted to granulocytic leukemia, with a high price and certain toxic and side effects. With the development of molecular genetics, molecular biology, second-generation sequencing and other technologies, the etiology and pathology of leukemia has been significantly studied, but the specific pathogenesis of leukemia has still been unclear. With the further promotion of molecular targeted drugs, chimeric antigen receptor T-cell immunotherapy (CAR-T) and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, although the treatment of leukemia has entered a new field, compared with traditional chemotherapy, these therapies have high costs, and the long-term efficacy is yet to be further confirmed. After years of basic research and clinical research, traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) volatile oil in the treatment of leukemia has made remarkable achievements. Essential oil can alleviate the toxic and side effect of chemotherapy drugs, effectively prolong or prevent the relapse of leukemia, inhibit the proliferation of leukemia cells, and promote the apoptosis of leukemia cells. In this paper, the authors reviewed relevant domestic and foreign literatures by literature tracking method, summarized the anti-leukemia mechanism of essential oil of TCM, analyzed the characteristics and existing problems of essential oil of TCM, and proposed the improvement direction, in order to provide reference for accelerating the research and development and innovation of essential oil in the treatment of leukemia.

RESUMO

To evaluate hormesis induced by Yttrium (Y) nitrate in male rats, Y was offered to F0 mother rats and F1 offspring at concentrations of 0, 20, 80, and 320 ppm daily from gestational day (GD) 0 through postnatal day 70 (PND 70). The F1 offspring were evaluated with respect to motor function, learning and memory, and histopathology. Administration of Y improved motor function in a dose dependent manner. In the 20 ppm group, body weight and spatial learning and memory were increased, while the latter was decreased in the 320 ppm group. Additionally, in the 20 ppm and 80 ppm, but not the 320 ppm groups, Y reduced the anogenital distance, which indicated an anti-androgen effect. These results suggest that Y follows a hormetic concentration-related trend with an inverted U-shape.

RESUMO

No data were available on the acute oral toxicity, short-term oral toxicity of vegetable carbon in animals. This study was designed to evaluate the safety of two commercially available dietary bamboo charcoal powders (BCP1 and BCP2). The size distribution of the two powders was determined by a Mastersizer 2000 laser particle size analyzer prior to the in vivo safety studies. For the acute toxicity study, a single dose of 11.24 g/kg body weight of BCP1 and BCP2 was given once orally to healthy Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. Mortality and clinical symptoms were observed and recorded for the first 30 min after treatment, at 4 h post-administration, and then at least once daily for 14 days after administration. In the repeated dose 28-day oral toxicity study, BCP1 and BCP2 were administered orally at doses of 2.81, 5.62, and 11.24 g/kg body weight for 28 days to SD rats. Animals were sacrificed and organs and blood samples were analyzed. Results showed that both BCP1 and BCP2 were micro-sized and various in size. In the acute toxicity and the repeated dose 28-day oral toxicity studies, BCP caused neither mortality nor visible signs of toxicity in rats. No significant differences were found in the relative organ weights or in biochemical parameters in BCP treated groups compared to a control group. No treatment-related histological changes were observed in the organs of these animals. Based on these data, it is concluded that the median lethal dose (LD50) of BCP for both male and female rats is more than 11.24 g/kg body weight and the no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) is >11.24 g/kg body weight for 28 days.

RESUMO

Transient receptor potential vanilloid 4 (TRPV4) channel is a member of transient receptor potential superfamily. TRPV4 is selectively permeable to calcium. Activation of the TRPV4 channel induces an increase in intracellular calcium concentration and plays an important role under physiological and pathological conditions. Especially, there is evidence showing that TRPV4 is involved in cerebral ischemic reperfusion injury. The present paper reviewed some research progress about the role of TRPV4 in cerebral ischemic reperfusion injury.

RESUMO

Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite with a broad range of intermediate hosts. Chickens as important food-producing animals can also serve as intermediate hosts. To date, experimental studies on the pathogenicity of T. gondii in broiler chickens were rarely reported. The objective of the present study was to compare the pathogenicity of 5 different T. gondii strains (RH, CN, JS, CAT2, and CAT3) from various host species origin in 10-day-old chickens. Each group of chickens was infected intraperitoneally with 5 x 10(8), 1 x 10(8), 1 x 10(7), and 1 x 10(6) tachyzoites of the 5 strains, respectively. The negative control group was mockly inoculated with PBS alone. After infection, clinical symptoms and rectal temperatures of all the chickens were checked daily. Dead chickens during acute phage of the infection were checked for T. gondii tachyzoites by microscope, while living cases were checked for T. gondii infection at day 53 post-inoculation (PI) by PCR method. Histopathological sections were used to observe the pathological changes in the dead chickens and the living animals at day 53 PI. No significant differences were found in survival periods, histopathological findings, and clinical symptoms among the chickens infected with the RH, CN, CAT2, and CAT3 strains. Histopathological findings and clinical symptoms of the JS (chicken origin) group were similar to the others. However, average survival times of infected chickens of the JS group inoculated with 5 x 10(8) and 1 x 10(8) tachyzoites were 30.0 and 188.4 hr, respectively, significantly shorter than those of the other 4 mammalian isolates. Chickens exposed to 10(8) of T. gondii tachyzoites and higher showed acute signs of toxoplasmosis, and the lesions were relatively more severe than those exposed to lower doses. The results indicated that the pathogenicity of JS strain was comparatively stronger to the chicken, and the pathogenicity was dose-dependent.

RESUMO

The anti-tumor effect of R-Phycoerythrin (R-PE) from Porphyra haitanensis was studied using cell line HeLa as an in vitro model and Sarcoma-180 (S180) tumor-bearing mice as an in vivo model. The results showed that the combination treatment of R-PE and photodynamic therapy PDT) significantly inhibited the growth of HeLa cells up to 81.5%, with a fair dose-effect relationship, but did not inhibit endothelial cells. The annexin v-fitc/PI fluorescence staining experiments demonstrated that at doses between 0~60µg/mL, apoptosis cells and later stage apoptosis cells or necrosis cells increased significantly as the R-PE dosage increased. DNA electrophoresis showed that after R-PE+PDT treatment of HeLa cells for 24 hours, a light "smear" band between 100~400bp appeared to indicate the degradation of genomic DNA. The QRT-PCR results showed that R-PE+PDT treatment increased caspase-3 and caspase-10 gene expression and decreased the Bcl-2 gene expression level significantly as the R-PE dose increased, implying that R-PE promoted HeLa cell apoptosis. Compared with untreated S180 tumor-bearing mice, R-PE injection significantly inhibited the growth of S180 in tumor-bearing mice up to 41.3% at a dose of 300mg-kg-1. Simultaneously, the significant increase of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in serum (p < 0.01) and the decrease of the malondialdehyde (MDA) level in liver suggests that R-PE improved the anti-oxidant ability of the S180 tumor-bearing mice, which may related to its antitumor effect. In addition, the R-PE caused a significant increase (p < 0.05) in the spleen index and thymus index, and a significant increase (p < 0.01) in lymphocyte proliferation, NK cell kill activity and the TNF-α level in the serum of S180 tumor-bearing mice. These results strongly suggest that the antitumor effect of R-PE from Porphyra haitanensis functioned by increasing the immunity and antioxidant ability of S180 tumor-bearing mice, promoting apoptosis by increasing protease gene expression and TNF-α secretion.

RESUMO

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To evaluate the effect of short-course kidney-invigorating therapy on near-term semen quality in asthenozoospermic men with kidney deficiency.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Based on the differential types in traditional Chinese medicine, 121 asthenozoospermia patients received at our clinic of andrology were divided into groups A (kidney-yin deficiency), B (kidney-yang deficiency) and C (spleen and kidney deficiency), and treated with Yougui Decoction plus Wuziyanzong Pills, Jinkuishenqi Pills plus Wuziyanzong Pills, and Shizi Decoction plus Liujunzi Decoction, respectively, all given once daily for 4 weeks. Sperm parameters of the patients were analyzed with the computer-assisted sperm analysis system before and after treatment and compared among the three groups.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The baseline sperm concentrations in groups A, B and C ([70.4 +/- 38.6], [73.5 +/- 40.2] and [56.0 +/-34.4] x 10(6)/ml) showed no significant differences from those after medication ([74.4 +/- 32.6], [67.0 +/- 30.8] and [58.6 +/- 24.6] x 10(6)/ml) (P > 0.05). The percentages of grade a sperm in the three groups were (12.9 +/- 5.3)%, (13.7 +/- 7.7)% and (12.9 +/- 6.4)% respectively after treatment, significantly higher than (9.9 +/- 6.7)%, (9.3 +/- 5.4)% and (9.0 +/- 6.8)% before treatment (P < 0.05), and so were the percentages of grade a + b sperm ([37.4 +/- 10.2 ]%, [35.7 +/- 13.7]% and [35.9 +/- 12.3]% after treatment versus [29.6 +/- 13.2]%, [27.5 +/- 10.4]% and [28.3 +/- 12.1]% before treatment, P < 0.05). All the three groups showed significantly increased sperm motility after treatment ([53.8 +/- 10.5]%, [52.6 +/- 15.2]% and [51.1 +/- 13.1]%) as compared with the baseline levels ([44.3 +/- 14.0]%, [43.5 +/- 15.0]% and [42.4 +/- 14.9]%) (P < 0.05). The cure rate and total effectiveness rate were significantly higher in group B than in A (P < 0.05), but had no significant differences between either A and C or B and C (P > 0.05).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Short-course kidney-invigorating therapy can significantly improve near-term semen quality in asthenozoospermic men with kidney asthenia, especially in those with kidney-yang deficiency, and it has no obvious adverse effects.</p>

RESUMO

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To observe the effects of interleukin-8 monoclonal antibody on smooth muscle cell proliferation and balloon inflation-induced abdominal aorta stenosis in rabbits.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Thirty-six New Zealand white rabbits were randomly assigned to balloon inflation group (group A, n = 12), interleukin-8 monoclonal antibody pre-treated rabbits (2 mg/kg for 3 days before balloon inflation, group B, n = 12) and sham-operated control group (group C, n = 12). Peripheral blood was collected before experiment and at 4 h, 1, 3, 7, 14, and 28 days post balloon inflation or sham operation and the levels of IL-8 were measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The ratio of positive and negative masculine cells in the high power microscopic field was determined in proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) stained slide. Histopathologic examination was performed in abdominal aorta and luminal area, intima and tunica media area were measured.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>Plasma interleukin-8 began to rise at 4 h and peaked at 1 day and remained increased up to 28 days after balloon inflation in rabbits of group A, plasma interleukin-8 level in group A was significantly higher than in group B and C at 4 h and thereafter post operation. The ratio of positive and negative masculine cells was significantly increased in group A compared to group C and was significantly lower in group B than in group A. Abdominal aorta stenosis, luminal area, intima and tunica media area were significantly reduced in group B than in group A. Correlation analysis indicated that there were positive relations between plasma IL-8 level and intima thickness, area of intima and tunica media, respectively (r = 0.894, 0.783, 0.801, 0.912, all P < 0.01).</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>Plasma IL-8 level is increased in this abdominal aorta stenosis model and is positively correlated to the severity of abdominal aorta stenosis. IL-8 monoclonal antibody could significantly reduce abdominal aorta stenosis in this abdominal aorta stenosis model.</p>
