RESUMO

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a highly prevalent joint disorder characterized by progressive degeneration of articular cartilage, subchondral bone remodeling, osteophyte formation, synovial inflammation, and meniscal damage. Although the etiology of OA is multifactorial, pro-inflammatory processes appear to play a key role in disease pathogenesis. Previous studies indicate that electroacupuncture (EA) exerts chondroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic effects in preclinical models of OA, but the mechanisms underlying these potential therapeutic benefits remain incompletely defined. This study aimed to investigate the effects of EA on OA development in a rat model, as well as to explore associated molecular mechanisms modulated by EA treatment. Forty rats were divided into OA, EA, antagomiR-214, and control groups. Following intra-articular injection of monosodium iodoacetate to induce OA, EA and antagomiR-214 groups received daily EA stimulation at acupoints around the knee joint for 21 days. Functional pain behaviors and chondrocyte apoptosis were assessed as outcome measures. The expression of microRNA-214 (miR-214) and its downstream targets involved in apoptosis and nociception, BAX and TRPV4, were examined. Results demonstrated that EA treatment upregulated miR-214 expression in OA knee cartilage. By suppressing pro-apoptotic BAX and pro-nociceptive TRPV4, this EA-induced miR-214 upregulation ameliorated articular pain and prevented chondrocyte apoptosis. These findings suggested that miR-214 plays a key role mediating EA's therapeutic effects in OA pathophysiology, and represents a promising OA treatment target for modulation by acupuncture.

RESUMO

During the COVID-19 outbreak, there was a sharp increase in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Acupuncture therapy has the advantages of accurate clinical efficacy, safety and reliability, few adverse reactions, and no dependence, and is gradually becoming one of the emerging therapies for treating GAD. We present a study protocol for a randomized clinical trial with the aim of exploring the mechanism of brain plasticity in patients with GAD and evaluate the effectiveness and reliability of acupuncture treatment. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) will be used to assess cortical excitability in GAD patients and healthy people. Sixty-six GAD patients meeting the inclusion criteria will be randomly divided into two groups: TA group, (treatment with acupuncture and basic western medicine treatment) and SA group (sham acupuncture and basic western medicine treatment). Twenty healthy people will be recruited as the control group (HC). The parameters that will be evaluated are amplitude of motor evoked potentials (MEPs), cortical resting period (CSP), resting motor threshold (RMT), and Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) score. Secondary results will include blood analysis of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), glutamate (Glu), glutamine (Gln), serotonin (5-HT), and brain-derived nerve growth factor (BDNF). Outcomes will be assessed at baseline and after the intervention (week 8). This study protocol is the first clinical trial designed to detect differences in cerebral cortical excitability between healthy subjects and patients with GAD, and the comparison of clinical efficacy and reliability before and after acupuncture intervention is also one of the main contents of the protocol. We hope to find a suitable non-pharmacological alternative treatment for patients with GAD.

ObjectiveTo observe the clinical effectiveness and safety of She medicine (畲药) Diren Zishen Formula(地稔滋肾方) combined with acupuncture as adjunctive treatment for primary biliary cholangitis with liver and kidney yin deficiency syndrome. MethodsSeventy patients of primary biliary cholangitis with liver and kidney yin deficiency syndrome were randomly divided into a control group and a treatment group, with 35 patients in each group. The control group received oral ursodeoxycholic acid capsules (250 mg per dose, three times daily). The treatment group received She medicine Diren Zishen Formula oral decoction (one dose daily, 200 ml per dose in the morning and evening, served warm) and acupuncture [bilateral Sanyingjiao (SP6), Taichong (LR3), Ganshu (BL18), Zusanli (ST36), Fenglong (ST17), once daily, 5 consecutive days per week] in addition to the same treatment as the control group. The treatment duration was three months for both groups. Comparisons were made between the two groups before and after treatment for the following parameters, which were four traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) symptoms scores (skin itching, fatigue, jaundice, and flank pain), TCM syndrome scores, liver function indicators including aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) and total bilirubin (TBiL), liver fibrosis markers including serum laminin (LN), serum hyaluronic acid (HA), serum type Ⅳ collagen (Ⅳ-C) and serum type Ⅲ procollagen (PC-Ⅲ), and inflammatory factor indicators including serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α). The effectiveness of TCM syndrome between the two groups was compared and safety evaluations were also conducted after treatment. ResultsA total of 32 cases were finally analyzed in the treatment group, while the control group had 31 cases. The total effective rate of TCM syndrome in the treatment group (87.50%, 28/32) was higher than that in the control group (67.74%, 20/31) (P<0.05). After treatment, the TCM symptom scores, syndrome scores, liver function, and liver fibrosis markers in both groups signi-ficantly decreased, while in the treatment group, the inflammatory factor indicators decreased after treatment, and more decreases were found than those in the control group (P<0.05 or P<0.01). Both groups had good safety, and no adverse reactions were observed. ConclusionThe combination of She medicine Diren Zishen Formula and acupuncture as an adjunctive treatment for primary biliary cholangitis can significantly improve the clinical effectiveness, improve liver function, reduce inflammatory response, and alleviate liver fibrosis, with good safety.

RESUMO

ObjectiveTo observe the clinical efficacy of modified Shenqi Pill (肾气丸) plus Tongdu Tiaoshen Acupuncture (通督调神针刺) in the treatment of neurogenic bladder after spinal cord injury of kidney-yang deficiency syndrome. MethodsForty-six patients were randomly divided into 23 cases each in the control group and the treatment group. Both groups were given conventional treatment, i.e. oral methylcobalamin tablets (0.5 mg each time, 3 times a day) and paraplegic conventional acupuncture (once a day, 6 consecutive days a week). The control group was given simple bladder function rehabilitation training on the basis of the conventional treatment; and the treatment group was given modified Shenqi Pill orally (1 dose a day, 150 ml each time, taken warmly in morning and evening) and Tongdu Tiaoshen Acupuncture (once a day, 6 consecutive days per week) in addition to what were given to the control group. The treatment course lasted for 4 weeks. The 24 h urination frequency, 24 h urine leakage frequency, 24 h single urine volume, bladder residual urine volume, international lower urinary tract symptom (LUTS) score, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome score were compared between the two groups, and clinical effectiveness and TCM syndrome effectiveness were compared between the two groups after treatment. ResultsTwenty patients in each group were finally analyzed in this study. The number of 24 h urination, the number of 24 h urine leakage, bladder residual urine volume, LUTS score, and the TCM syndrome scores decreased after treatment in both groups, and the 24 h single urine volume increased (P<0.01); and much more improvement was found of each index in the treatment group than in the control group (P<0.05 or P<0.01). The total clinical effectiveness and TCM syndrome effectiveness in the treatment group was 85.00% (17/20) respectively, which were statistically significantly higher than 45.00% (the total clinical effectiveness, 9/20) and 60.00% (TCM syndrome effectiveness, 12/20) in the control group (P<0.01). ConclusionModified Shenqi Pill plus Tongdu Tiaoshen Acupuncture can signi-ficantly improve the clinical symptoms of neurogenic bladder patients after spinal cord injury of kidney-yang deficiency syndrome, having better effectiveness than simple bladder function rehabilitation training, and its mechanism may be related to the improvement of the injured nerve function innervating the bladder.

RESUMO

ObjectiveTo observe the effect of acupuncture “Zhibian (BL 54)-to-Shuidao (ST 28)” on the reproductive function of asthenospermia model mice and to explore the possible mechanism. MethodsForty-two male C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into blank group, model group, and acupuncture group, with 14 mice in each group. Cyclophosphamide 30 mg/(kg·d) was injected intraperitoneally for 7 days to establish model of asthenospermia for the model group and the acupuncture group, while 0.9% sodium chloride solution 10 ml/(kg·d) was injected intraperitoneally for 7 days in the blank group. After successful modeling, mice in the acupuncture group received acupuncture at “Zhibian (BL 54)-to-Shuidao (ST 28)” once a day for 20 minutes, 6 times a week for 3 weeks; the remaining two groups were fixed without acupuncture. Daily observations were made on the general conditions of mice in all groups, and changes in body weight after intervention were recorded. On the next day after completing the treatment, 6 male mice selected randomly from each group to test the sperm quality as well as testicular and epididymal weights, and calculate the corresponding indices; ELISA was used to test the levels of testosterone (T), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH) in serum; HE staining and TUNEL staining were performed to observe the pathological morphology and apoptosis of testicular and epididymal tissues; fluorescence quantitative PCR and western blot were used to detect changes in the expression of apoptosis-related factors (Fas), Fas-associated death domain protein (FADD), B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2), Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax), and cysteine-aspartic acid protease (caspase)-3 mRNA and protein in testicular tissue. The remaining 8 male mice in each group were housed with estrus-cycling mice of the same strain at 1∶1 ratio, and the pregnancy rate and number of embryos per litter in each group were determined after mating. ResultsIn comparison with the blank group, mice in the model group exhibited reduced body weight, decreased testicular mass, testicular index, epididymal mass, and epididymal index. Additionally, there was a decrease in total sperm count, sperm motility, and sperm viability. Serum levels of T, FSH, and LH were reduced. The apoptosis rate increased, and the expression levels of Fas, FADD, Bax, and Caspase-3 mRNA and proteins were elevated, while Bcl-2 mRNA and protein expression levels decreased (P<0.01). Pathological abnormalities were observed in testicular and epididymal tissues, with disrupted arrangement of seminiferous tubules and a decreased number of spermatogenic cells within the tubular lumen. Furthermore, the pregnancy rate and the number of embryos per litter decreased significantly after mating (P<0.01). In comparison with the model group, mice in the acupuncture group showed improvements in testicular mass, testicular index, epididymal mass, epididymal index, total sperm count, sperm motility, and sperm viability. Serum levels of T, FSH, and LH increased. The apoptosis rate decreased, and the expression levels of Fas, FADD, Bax, and Caspase-3 mRNA and proteins decreased, while Bcl-2 mRNA and protein expression levels increased (P<0.05 or P<0.01). Morphological improvements were observed in testicular and epididymal tissues, with a compact arrangement of seminiferous tubules and an increased number of spermatogenic cells within the tubular lumen. Furthermore, the pregnancy rate and the number of embryos per litter increased significantly after mating (P<0.01). ConclusionAcupuncture “Zhibian (BL 54)-to-Shuidao (ST 28)” can improve testicular tissue apoptosis and enhance reproductive function in a mouse model of asthenospermia. Its mechanism may be associated with the modulation of key factors in the extrinsic membrane receptor pathway (Fas-mediated pathway) and the intrinsic mitochondrial pathway (Bcl-2/Bax-regulated pathway) in testicular tissue.

RESUMO

Dry eye disease(DED)refers to a condition characterized by reduced stability of the tear film or an imbalance in the microenvironment of the ocular surface, resulting from abnormalities in quality, quantity and kinetics of tear. This condition leads to various ocular discomforts and even visual impairment. The pathogenesis of DED is multifactorial and current treatment mainly focuses on symptom relief and preservation of visual function. Acupuncture has shown effectiveness in treating dry eye, although its underlying mechanism remains incompletely understood. Proteomics technology offers a comprehensive and systematic approach to studying the functions, structures and interactions of proteins. Its application in DED research can provide valuable insights into the dynamic changes in protein levels associated with different etiology or the course of DED and facilitate the identification of potential biomarkers. Furthermore, proteomics can systematically explore the regulatory mechanisms underlying acupuncture treatment for DED, providing a theoretical basis for acupuncture treatment research and contributing to the understanding of its effects at a fundamental level. This paper aims to explore the potential application of proteomics in both clinical and basic research on DED. Ultimately, it strives to offer scientific and effective strategies for the diagnosis and treatment of DED and advance our knowledge of the mechanisms underlying acupuncture therapy.

RESUMO

ObjectiveTo observe the effect of enriched environment (EE) combined with acupuncture at head point (HA) on behavior in rats with autism spectrum disorder. MethodsHealthy female Wistar rats were given peritoneal injection of sodium valproate at 12.5 days of gestation. Twenty-four male offspring rats were randomly selected and then randomly divided into model group (n = 6), EE group (n = 6), HA group (n = 6) and EE combined with HA group (the combined group, n = 6). Six male offspring rats born from female mice injected with the same amount of saline intraperitoneally were as control group. After four weeks of treatment, all the five groups were tested with three-chamber test and marble burying test, and the sociability index, the social novelty index and the number of buried marbles were recorded. The levels of interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-6 in peripheral blood were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). ResultsAfter treatment, compared with the model group, the sociability index and the social novelty index improved (P < 0.05), the number of buried marbles reduced (P < 0.05), and the levels of IL-6 and IL-1β in peripheral blood decreased in EE group, HA group and the combined group (P < 0.05); while the combined group was the best (P < 0.01). ConclusionBoth EE or acupuncture at HA could improve behavioral symptoms, and reduce the expression of inflammatory factors in rats with autism spectrum disorder. The combination of the two methods showed the best result.

RESUMO

Acupuncture, a therapeutic treatment defined as the insertion of needles into the body at specific points (ie, acupoints), has growing in popularity world-wide to treat various diseases effectively, especially acute and chronic pain. In parallel, interest in the physiological mechanisms underlying acupuncture analgesia, particularly the neural mechanisms have been increasing. Over the past decades, our understanding of how the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system process signals induced by acupuncture has developed rapidly by using electrophysiological methods. However, with the development of neuroscience, electrophysiology is being challenged by calcium imaging in view field, neuron population and visualization in vivo. Owing to the outstanding spatial resolution, the novel imaging approaches provide opportunities to enrich our knowledge about the neurophysiological mechanisms of acupuncture analgesia at subcellular, cellular, and circuit levels in combination with new labeling, genetic and circuit tracing techniques. Therefore, this review will introduce the principle and the method of calcium imaging applied to acupuncture research. We will also review the current findings in pain research using calcium imaging from in vitro to in vivo experiments and discuss the potential methodological considerations in studying acupuncture analgesia.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE@#To evaluate the effect of manual acupuncture on endometrial blood flow parameters by three-dimensional (3D) power Doppler ultrasound in women undergoing in vitro fertilization embryo transfer (IVF-ET).@*METHODS@#Seventy patients undergoing IVF-ET were equally randomized into traditional or sham acupuncture treatment group for totally 4 days (from the day of oocyte aspiration to the day of embryo transfer) of treatment by random envelope method at the Reproductive Medicine Center and Outpatient Department of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medicine College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology from January 2013 to December 2015. Patients in the traditional acupuncture group accepted traditional acupuncture methods with manual acupuncture, and Zhongji (CV3), Qihai (CV 6), Sanyinjiao (SP6), Taichong (LR 3), Tianshu (ST 25), Guilai (ST 29) and Zusanli (ST 36) were chosen. Patients at the sham acupuncture group accepted shallow acupuncture methods at 4 non-meridian points at each shoulder and upper arm. Outcome measures included endometrial ultrasonic indices such as vascularization index (VI), flow index (FI) and vascularization flow index (VFI), endometrial thickness and volume, subendometrial VI (sVI), subendometrial FI (sFI), subendometrial VFI (sVFI), implantation rate, clinical pregnancy rate, abortion rate, live birth rate and number of live births.@*RESULTS@#Finally, 34 patients in the traditional acupuncture group and 35 in the sham acupuncture group completed this trial. VI, FI and VFI of the traditional acupuncture group were significantly higher than those in the sham acupuncture group (P<0.05). No significant differences were found in endometrial thickness, endometrial volume, sVI, sFI, sVFI, implantation rate, clinical pregnancy rate, abortion rate, live birth rate and number of live births (P>0.05).@*CONCLUSIONS@#Manual acupuncture performed after oocyte aspiration and before transplantation improved the endometrial blood flow parameters VI, RI and VFI in women who underwent IVF-ET, instead of sVI, sFI and sVFI. Therefore, acupuncture might be beneficial in women undergoing IVF-ET by increasing endometrial blood flow and endometrial receptivity. (Registration No. ChiCTR2100053354).

RESUMO

BACKGROUND@#The effects of acupuncture have varied in different randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and there are many factors that influence treatment effect of acupuncture in different outcomes, with conflicting results.@*OBJECTIVE@#To identify factors and their impact on the treatment effect of acupuncture in different outcomes.@*METHODS@#Acupuncture RCTs were searched from 7 databases including Medline (PubMed), Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Database, VIP Database, and China Biology Medicine disc between January 1st, 2015 and December 31st, 2019. Eligible studies must compare acupuncture to no acupuncture, sham acupuncture, or waiting lists, and report at least 1 patient-important outcome. A multi-level meta-regression was conducted using a 3-level robust mixed model and univariate analyses were performed for all independent variables, even those excluded from the multivariable model due to collinearities. We used thresholds of 0.2 and 0.4 for the difference of standardized mean differences (SMDs), categorising them as small (<0.2), moderate (0.2-0.4), or large (>0.4) effects.@*RESULTS@#The pain construct analysis involved 211 effect estimates from 153 studies and 14 independent variables. High-frequency acupuncture treatment sessions produced larger effects compared to low-frequency sessions [large magnitude, the difference of adjusted SMDs 0.46, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.07 to 0.84; P=0.02]. The non-pain symptoms construct analysis comprised 323 effect estimates from 231 studies and 15 independent variables. Penetrating acupuncture showed moderately larger effects when compared to non-penetrating acupuncture (0.30, 95% CI 0.06 to 0.53; P=0.01). The function construct analysis included 495 effect estimates from 274 studies and 14 independent variables. Penetrating acupuncture and the flexible acupuncture regimen showed moderately larger effects, compared to non-penetrating acupuncture and fixed regimen, respectively (0.40, 95% CI 0 to 0.80; P=0.05; 0.29, 95% CI 0.06 to 0.53; P=0.01).@*CONCLUSIONS@#High-frequency acupuncture sessions appear to be a more effective approach to managing painful symptoms. Penetrating acupuncture demonstrated greater effect in relieving non-painful symptoms. Both penetrating acupuncture type and flexible acupuncture regimen were linked to significant treatment effects in function outcomes. Future studies should consider the factors that are significantly associated with the effects of acupuncture in patient-important outcomes.

RESUMO

ObjectiveTo investigate the clinical efficacy of Huangqi injection combined with Buzhong Yiqi acupuncture in the treatment of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) with Qi deficiency and its effects on TCM syndromes, fatigue symptoms, serum superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), and oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) levels. MethodA total of 200 patients with CFS of Qi deficiency were randomly divided into a control group (100 cases) and an observation group (100 cases). The control group was treated with vitamin B compounds, and the observation group was treated with Huangqi injection combined with Buzhong Yiqi acupuncture for two weeks. The scores of TCM syndromes, fatigue symptoms, levels of serum SOD, MDA, and ox-LDL and the incidence of adverse reactions were observed and compared before and after treatment in two groups. ResultAfter treatment, the total effective rate of the control group was 54.34% (50/92), while that of the observation group was 88.54% (85/96). The total effective rate of the observation group was higher than that of the control group (χ2=27.13,P<0.05). Compared with those in the two groups before treatment, scores of fatigue self-assessment scale (FSAS), physical fatigue and mental fatigue, and sleep/rest response scores of fatigue in the two groups after treatment were significantly decreased (P<0.05). After treatment, scores of FSAS, physical fatigue and mental fatigue, and sleep/rest response scores of fatigue in the observation group were significantly decreased compared with those in the control group (P<0.05). Compared with those in the two groups before treatment, TCM syndrome scores in the two groups after treatment were significantly decreased (P<0.05). After treatment, TCM syndrome scores in the observation group were significantly decreased compared with those in the control group (P<0.05). Compared with those in the two groups before treatment, MDA levels in the two groups were significantly decreased (P<0.05), ox-LDL levels in the observation group were significantly decreased (P<0.05), and SOD levels were significantly increased (P<0.05). After treatment, compared with those in the control group, the serum MDA and ox-LDL levels in the observation group were significantly decreased (P<0.05), and the serum SOD was significantly increased (P<0.05). No serious adverse events or adverse reactions occurred during this clinical trial. ConclusionHuangqi injection combined with Buzhong Yiqi acupuncture has a good clinical curative effect in the treatment of CFS with Qi deficiency, which can effectively improve the fatigue symptoms of patients, increase the level of SOD, and reduce the level of serum MDA and ox-LDL. The patients in the control group were administered orally with prednisone acetate tablets and methylcobalamin tablets until the 28th day of illness. In the observation group, the staging comprehensive treatment with acupuncture-moxibustion was adopted. On the affected side, Qianzheng (EX-HN 16), Yifeng (TE 17), Sibai (ST 2), Yangbai (GB 14), Jiache (ST 6), Dicang (ST 4) and Touwei (ST 8), etc. were stimulated. In the acute stage (Day 1 to 7 of illness), the routine acupuncture and the point-toward-point needle insertion were delivered, no any manipulation was exerted at acupoints, and the needles were retained for 30 min. In the subacute stage (Day 8 to 14 of illness), on the base of the treatment as the acute stage, the depth of needle insertion was adjusted at a part of acupoints and the even needling technique was operated by twisting needle. Besides, electroacupuncture (EA) was attached to Qianzheng (EX-HN 16) and Dicang (ST 4), with continuous wave of low intensity and high frequency, 100 Hz, for 20 min. In the recovery stage (Day 15 to 28 of illness), on the base of the treatment as the subacute stage, the heavy stimulation of acupuncture was given, in which, the sticking and lifting needle techniques were delivered after the needles were inserted from Sibai (ST 2) toward Dicang (ST 4), and from Dicang (ST 4) toward Jiache (ST 6), separately; warm needling was operated at Yifeng (TE 17), and EA changed to stimulate the acupoints with the intermittent wave of high intensity and low frequency, 2 Hz, for 30 min. Acupuncture-moxibustion was given once every other day until the end of the 28th day of illness. The level of House-Brackmann facial nerve function rating scale (H-B grade),the score of Sunnybrook facial nerve grading system (Sunnybrook), the score of facial disability index (FDI), the temperature difference in the infrared thermal imaging facial area and electromyogram (EMG) situation of the affected muscle group were observed before and after treatment in the two groups. Using musculoskeletal ultrasound, the facial nerve diameter was detected and the clinical effect was compared between the two groups.@*RESULTS@#After treatment, the level of H-B grade, Sunnybrook score, the scores of physical function and social life function in FDI were improved when compared with those before treatment in the patients of either group (P<0.01, P<0.05), and the results of these evaluations in the observation group were better than those of the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, the temperature difference of the frontal area, the eye area, the zygomatic area and the mouth corner was declined in comparison with that before treatment in the two groups (P<0.05), and the temperature difference in each area in the observation group was lower than that of the control group (P<0.05).The root mean square (RMS) of the frontal muscle group, the zygomatic muscle group and the orbicularis muscle group on the affected side increased in comparison with that before treatment in the two groups (P<0.01), and RMS of the observation group was higher than that of the control group (P<0.05) after treatment. Before treatment, the diameter of the facial nerve on the affected side was larger than that on the healthy side (P<0.01), and after treatment, the diameter on the affected side was reduced when compared with that before treatment in the two groups (P<0.01); the diameter of the facial nerve on the affected side in the observation group was smaller than that of the control group (P<0.05), while, the diameter on the affected side was larger when compared with the healthy side in the control group (P<0.05). The total effective rate of the observation group was 93.3% (28/30), higher than that of the control group (83.3% [25/30], P<0.05).@*CONCLUSIONS@#The staging comprehensive treatment with acupuncture-moxibustion is clearly effective on Bell's facial palsy in the acute stage, which affirms the effectiveness of acupuncture-moxibustion for the acute stage of Bell's facial palsy in comparison with conventional western medication.

Abstract Acupuncture is offered in the Brazilian National Health System (SUS), but its practice is matter of legal disputes. This study analyzes aspects of this practice by different professionals of the field of health. An analysis of scientific and institutional literature (Brazilian and international), whose selection was intentionally guided, was carried out. The results address aspects of the dispute over the practice of acupuncture; the teaching of acupuncture and its regulations; and the operationalization of records of acupuncture practice in the SUS. The absence of unified rules for this exercise generated infra-legal regulation of governmental institutions and professional corporations in Brazil, admitting multidisciplinary practice, in accordance with the guidelines of the World Health Organization.

RESUMO

Abstract Objective Hip osteoarthritis (HO) causes pain and deranges functioning. Surgical treatment is the preferred approach in severe cases, but clinical comorbidities, age and the long waiting list may compromise quality of life. This study aimed to describe the results of acupuncture for the control pain and improvement of functioning in subjects with HO. Method Twelve severe HO patients were treated with ten weekly sessions of a standardized acupuncture point protocol. Pain intensity was assessed with the Visual Analog Pain Scale (VAS) and quality of life with WOMAC Index. Results Pain intensity (VAS) reduced from 75.8 ± 18.8 mm to 20.0 ± 22.6 mm after 10 acupuncture sessions and 48.3 ± 26.6mm in the follow-up (ANOVA F = 7.99; p < 0.001). WOMAC Index values reduced from 74.7 ± 12.7 to 45.7 ± 22.1 and 54.6 ± 22.9 at the same timepoints. Conclusion Acupuncture is an effective conservative rehabilitation strategy to reduce pain and improve quality of life in subjects with severe HO.

Introduction: Complementary traditional medicine acquires an essential value from the diversity and pluralism of care and therapy. In this logic, it is up to people to search for alternatives when it comes to caring for and improving their own health. Specifically, acupuncture has had rapid growth, largely due to processes derived from globalization, migration and cultural exchange, which in some way force countries to modify their health system towards one that takes into account the transculturality of its population and treatment preferences. Development: With the establishment of a comprehensive health model, physicians can assess the person as a homeodynamic process (information exchange process between environment and man, to keep an internal and external homeostasis to the individual) and pandimensional (spiritual and energetic care) that allows to identify the health problem's origin and thus determine an intervention more in line with the person's needs during the health-disease, life-death processes, with the corresponding conventional or non-conventional therapy. Conclusions: The value and interest of acupuncture in the population derives from the degree of development of a country, its origin and the incorporation of the West as part of the diagnostic and therapeutic arsenal, in order to respond to the population needs by incorporating low-cost complementary treatments with proven effectiveness, without ceasing to consider its unquestionable cultural heritage.

Background: psoriasis affects approximately 2 % of the world population, with extensive biopsychosocial repercussions. Objective: to determine the effectiveness of the combined catgutpuncture-ozone therapy treatment in patients with psoriasis vulgaris. Methods: quasi-experimental intervention study of the type before and after without a control group carried out at the Lucia Íñiguez Landín Hospital, from April 2019 to 2021. 55 patients were the population; 29 patients were the sample who met the inclusion criteria.
