O Centro de Memória e Museu Histórico da Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto: contribuições para a história e a educação médica / The Center for Memory and Historical Museum at the Ribeirão Preto Medical School: contributions to history and medical education

Resumo Problematizando o lugar da história e da memória na educação médica, apresentamos a trajetória de constituição e o acervo do Centro de Memória e Museu Histórico da Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto. Reunindo objetos tridimensionais, fotografias, fitas cassete e coleções resultantes de doações, o centro pretende viabilizar pesquisas históricas e promover formação cultural dos estudantes, particularmente de medicina. A iniciativa afirma o potencial das humanidades para desenvolver espírito crítico e preserva rico acervo que testemunha criatividade dos pioneiros da pesquisa básica em medicina no Brasil. Concluímos que a experiência em curso na instituição carrega o potencial de contribuir para a história e a educação médica ao vincular-se à visão ampla de ciência e universidade.

Abstract This investigation of the role played by history and memory in medical education involves the establishment of the Center for Memory and Historical Museum at the Ribeirão Preto Medical School. By bringing together three-dimensional objects, photographs, cassette tapes, and collections of donated objects, the Center facilitates historical research and promotes the cultural formation of students, particularly in the area of medicine. This initiative affirms the function of the humanities in developing a critical spirit, and preserves a rich collection that bears witness to the creativity of Brazil's pioneers in medical research. We conclude that this institution has the potential to contribute to history and medical education through its connection to a broad vision of science and university.

Pavilhão Mourisco: desafios para sua preservação / Moorish Pavilion: preservation challenges

Resumo O artigo analisa os desafios para a preservação do Pavilhão Mourisco do ponto de vista da equipe do Departamento de Patrimônio Histórico da Casa de Oswaldo Cruz. Apresenta as principais vulnerabilidades do edifício e acervos móveis nele abrigados e a mudança gradual de abordagem em relação à atuação do departamento - da intervenção pontual de restauração à definição de estratégias globais com foco na conservação preventiva. Para tanto, traça um breve panorama das principais obras realizadas na edificação nos últimos trinta anos, bem como das ações contínuas de conservação implementadas, apresentando a metodologia adotada para a elaboração do Plano de Conservação Preventiva do conjunto formado pelo edifício, bens integrados e acervos móveis.

Abstract The challenges facing the team from the Department of Historical Heritage at Casa de Oswaldo Cruz in the preservation of its main building, the Moorish Pavilion, are discussed. The main weaknesses of the building and the collections of artifacts it contains are presented, and the gradual change in approach adopted by the department - from ad hoc restoration interventions to the setting of broad strategies for its preventive conservation - is discussed. To this end, a brief overview is given of the main work done on the building in the last thirty years and the ongoing conservation actions undertaken, including the methodology adopted for the design of the Preventive Conservation Plan of the building, its integrated heritage, and its collections of artifacts.

Diversidade e controle de insetos-praga no arquivo judicial da Câmara Municipal de Pitangui, MG / Diversity and control of pest insects in the judicial archive of the city council of Pitangui, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil

A destruição de livros e documentos por organismos-praga é um problema antigo, enfrentado principalmente por bibliotecários e arquivistas. O trabalho teve como objetivo descrever suscintamente as principais ações e resultados do Manejo Integrado de Pragas (MIP) implementadas no Arquivo Judicial da Câmara Municipal de Pitangui, MG, durante os meses de janeiro de 2004 a agosto de 2005. Dentre estas ações, realizou-se um levantamento dos organismos-praga presentes tanto na área física do acervo, quanto no material bibliográfico. Todo o material bibliográfico foi tratado através do método do congelamento controlado, que consiste em acondicionar o material bibliográfico em um congelador (freezer) a temperaturas negativas, por um tempo pré-determinado. No caso desse método, foi avaliada a efetividade do controle, através da verificação da presença de indivíduos mortos e vivos, logo após o tratamento, três e seis meses depois. O levantamento dos organismos-praga na área física do acervo evidenciou a presença do cupim de madeira seca Cryptotermes brevis (Walker) e das formigas Tapinoma melanocephalum (Fabricius) e Camponotus sp. No material bibliográfico, além do cupim C. brevis, foram identificados besouros da espécie Tricorynus herbarius (Gorjam), traças Lepisma saccharina Linnaeus e piolhos-do-livro do gênero Liposcelis sp. As medidas de controle evidenciaram a efetividade dos métodos adotados, não ocorrendo reincidência das pragas durante o período de estudo.

Destruction of books and documents by pest organisms is an age-old problem, faced mainly by both librarians and archivists. The present study provides a brief report on the main actions and the results of the Integrated Management of Pests (IMP) implemented in the Judicial Archive of the City Council of Pitangui, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, during the months of January 2004 to August 2005. These actions included a survey of the pest organisms present both in the physical area of the archive and in the bibliographical material. All the material was treated through the controlled freezing method, which consistsin putting the bibliographical material into a freezer at negative temperatures for a predetermined time period. In the case of this method, the effectiveness of the control was evaluated through the verification of the presence of dead and living individuals, soon after the treatment and at three and six months later. The survey of the pest organisms in the physical area of the archive revealed the presence of the termite Cryptotermes brevis (Walker) and the ants Tapinoma melanocephalum (Fabricius) and Camponotus sp. In the bibliographical material, in addition to the termite C. brevis there were identified beetles of the species Tricorynus herbarius (Gorham), silverfish Lepisma saccharina Linnaeus, and book lice of the genus Liposcelis sp. The control measures evidenced the effectiveness of the methods used, with no reoccurrence of the pest during the study period.

Pelo resgate da memória documental das ciências e da agricultura: o acervo do Instituto Biológico de São Paulo / Towards a recovery of the documental memory of sciences and agriculture: the Instituto Biológico de São Paulo's collection

O presente trabalho faz um breve inventário do acervo documental do Instituto Biológico de São Paulo, de como se constituiu e sua relevância para as pesquisas em história das ciências no Brasil. A partir de um sucinto histórico da instituição, torna-se possível visualizar sua atuação no campo da pesquisa agronômica em São Paulo. Além de permitir dimensionar o papel das ciências na modernização da agricultura paulista, o acervo do Instituto Biológico reúne documentos de cientistas importantes de nossa história, como Arthur Neiva, Henrique da Rocha Lima e José Reis.

This brief inventory of the Biological Institute of São Paulo's documental collection describes how the archive came to be and explains its relevance to history of sciences research in Brazil. A short history of the institution provides insight into its activities in the field of agronomic research in São Paulo and the role that sciences played in modernizing agriculture in that state. The collection contains documents by scientists whose names occupy a special place in the history of Brazil, such as Arthur Neiva, Henrique da Rocha Lima, and José Reis.
