Tinnitus is defined as a hearing illusion or endogenous auditory sensation that is not related to any external stimulation source. It is a frequent symptom among elderly people. To date, many authors have argued that the lack of knowledge about the tinnitus etiology, added to the subjectivity of this manifestation, and the overlap of other diseases and symptoms that often occur with aged patients make the obtainment of a good therapeutic result difficult. The objective of this review was to find the most used clinical treatment in clinical practice for primary tinnitus on adults and elderly. The status of the last five years of studies in free full texts on PubMed database was checked. Twenty-five articles showed clinical treatment for primary tinnitus, with four articles about acupuncture, two about acoustic coordinate reset neuromodulation, one about sound generator associated with conventional amplification, and one about body-psychotherapy which included adults and elderly with an average age between 51 to 54 years old showing satisfactory results. It is difficult to state that the proposed treatment is efficient on healing the tinnitus symptoms on adults and elderly but there are some low-cost therapies showing relatively satisfactory responses.

The virtues attributed to complementary therapies such as holistic and patient-centered approaches and stimulus for self-healing have been increasingly valued and could theoretically attenuate the current prevailing excessive social medicalization. Among such therapies, acupuncture has been highlighted due to its progressive institutionalization and acceptance. The objective of the current study was to analyze the experience of acupuncture patients in the Brazilian Unified National Health System and its relationship to their care, in light of social medicalization in terms of the constitutive aspects, representations, and users' explanatory models. Thirty patients were interviewed, selected from primary and secondary care services in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina State, Brazil. Important therapeutic results were observed in the principal complaints, sleep, disposition, emotional status, and decreased use of medication. Users' explanatory models and self-care were modified very little, or not at all, by acupuncture treatment. However, the study showed expanded and less iatrogenic care, especially in the primary care setting, in which there was little supply of other associated practices from Chinese medicine.

Bee venom acupuncture has been widely used as a method to treat chronic pain, multiple sclerosis, myalgia, arthritis, and neuralgia. However, bee stings can induce anaphylaxis in both children and adults. We experienced two cases of anaphylaxis after bee venom acupuncture. A 42-year-old woman who had received venom acupuncture on the head, neck and back, experienced facial edema, generalized urticaria, and dyspnea 10 min. after the treatment. High levels of serum specific IgE to honeybee venom measured by CAP method was noted. The other patient was a 39-year-old woman who also received venom acupuncture on the back and experienced facial edema, generalized urticaria, dyspnea, and lower abdominal pain 10 min. after the treatment. High levels of serum specific IgE to honeybee venom by CAP method was also noted. Therefore, due to its wide use, bee venom acupuncture could induce IgE-sensitization and anaphylaxis in this country.

RESUMO

In this paper, authors discussed the development of the traditional surgery of Choson Period(16th to 19th century), and analyzed the contents of their professional guide books on surgery, particulary, on abscess(Chong-Ki) excision. The invasive skill of Korean abscess healers was by far different from ones of the preservative traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine. Korean healers used specially designed acupuncture instruments(mess-like), and they advocated early excision of abscess(carbuncle, furuncle, liver abscess, pleurisy etc). Their achievement can be said to be comparable with that of Ambroise Pare. Generally, they were of low classes. Therefore, by treating horses and their neighbors of same classes, they could improve their invasive, rather dangerous skills and could invent new techniques of surgery. And it might be said that they inherited the traditional secret method of medicine-men and Buddhist-doctors of Koryo period.

We treated 200 cases with Spondylosis deformans using acupuncture and Qigong and achieved reasonably good effect.
Results: Clinical cure were 144 cases (72%), while 52 cases (26%) were rated effective. Four cases (2%) were invalid. The total rate of effectiveness was 98%. Twenty seven cases were cured in two courses of treatment, 110 in four courses and 7 in six courses.
Discussion: This disease belongs to the category krown as “Bi zheng” (arthralgiasyndrome) in tradional Chinese medicine. The disease results from “damage to the Governor Vessel” and “stagnancy of Qi and Blood”. The patients practised Shadow Qigong and Huanghai Qigong during the acupuncture treatment. The patients felt “De qi” (needling sensation by acupuncture) and “Qi gan” (Qi sensation of Qigong). The function of Qigong is to improve the circulation of Qi and Blood and to promote health.

RESUMO

Pain is one of the most complex human experience and the commonest cause of stress and the most frequent symptom that makes people seek medical help. The mechanism of its production and perception are poor understood. Since the past, various procedures have been tried to control or relieve pain. It had been observed that acupuncture stimulation has been effective in the relief of painful conditions. However, up to the present there had been no definite proof that acupuncture treatment has cured any pathological condition. Work is at present proceeding to make this a practical possibility. Recently, in modern medical science, several experiments are in progress and in some cases, cure had been obtained but until these studies are completed and proved to be effective, it is impossible at the present stage to evaluate whether these occasional cures are statistically significant. So, we launched studies and observations at our pain clinic at St. Paul's Hospital employing the "Somatosensory evoked Potential",(SEP) responses for chronic pain patient to relieve pain with acupuncture. The median and sural nerve of patients with chronic pain were stimulated and recorded using the SEP. Recordings were made before and after the acupuncture therapy was initiated. We analyzed the recorded SEP responses to see if ther are any physiological effects of the acupuncture therapy in patients with chronic pain. Findings: The important changes of the SEP responses recorded during acupuncture therapy in patients with chronic pain were the suppression of the amplitude of the SEP waves and delayed latency of the responses, similar to those manifested by patients, who are under morphine therapy. Then, naloxone an antagonist to morphine was administered. The effects were the same, that is the SEP responses were reversed in both the patients under morphine therapy and those under acupuncture therapy. So, we postulated that, since the meridian system is closely connected to the posterior column of the spinal cord conducting system, which is concerned in the somatosensory conducting system, peripheral stimulation by acupuncture may bring about the so called "pain suppression of descending system", which is closely connected to the meridian system of acupuncture. Though it is quite early to draw positive and definite conclusions, the results are very encouraging. More cases and further observations are advocated.

RESUMO

The experiments were carried out in mice to investigate the effects of acupuncturing Tsusanli (AT) on physical work capacity and neuroendocrino-immunological system. Mice were divided into four groups. The general health condition of the animals during the experimental period, the swimming duration, the content of hemoglobin and T, C, T/C, C 3, C 4 of alexin in the serum, the coefficients of spleen and thymus were observed. Results showed that AT could effectively improve the general health condition of the mice and strengthen the mice endurance as manifested by the prolonged swimming time, the increased content of hemoglobin and T, T/C, C 3, C 4 of alexin in the serum, and the higher coefficient of spleen and thymus gland. These indicated that AT was effective in elimination of fatigue and improving the endurance performance, showing the possibility of its appllication in the field of sports medicine.
