Quetelet, el hombre medio y el saber medico / Quetelet, the average man and medical knowledge

Analizo, a partir de dos libros de Adolphe Quetelet, su teoría del 'hombre medio' o que permite asociar la normalidad biológica y social a la frecuencia de aparición de determinadas características poblacionales. Los libros son: Sur l'homme et le développement de ses facultés y Du systeme social et des lois qui le régissent. Ambos muestran que las ideas de Quetelet están atravesadas por estrategias explicativas próximas a la física y a la astronomía, y también por estrategias discursivas próximas a la teología y a la religión. La estabilidad de la media por oposición a la dispersión de las características y hechos individuales servirá de fundamento para el uso de las estadísticas en las ciencias sociales y en la medicina.

Using two books by Adolphe Quetelet, I analyze his theory of the 'average man', which associates biological and social normality with the frequency with which certain characteristics appear in a population. The books are Sur l'homme et le développement de ses facultés and Du systeme social et des lois qui le régissent. Both reveal that Quetelet's ideas are permeated by explanatory strategies drawn from physics and astronomy, and also by discursive strategies drawn from theology and religion. The stability of the mean as opposed to the dispersion of individual characteristics and events provided the basis for the use of statistics in social sciences and medicine.

Adolphe Quetelet e a biopolitica como teologia secularizada / Adolphe Quetelet and biopolitics as secularized theology

Resgata-se a obra de um autor esquecido pelas ciências sociais na contemporaneidade, o polímata belga Adolphe Quetelet. Com foco em sua principal obra, Sur l'homme et le développement de ses facultés, ou Essai de physique sociale, destaca-se a importância da secularização de princípios teológicos para o âmbito da ciência na construção da obra queteletiana. Interessa aqui o duplo engajamento científico-político de Quetelet, por ter ele sido o principal propulsor, no século XIX, da incorporação da estatística enquanto ciência fundamental para o governo da população pelo Estado. Indica-se também o relevante papel por ele representado para a realização do projeto político hegemônico da modernidade, a biopolítica, e sua influência nos séculos XIX e XX no campo da biomedicina.

The article recaptures the work of an author who has been forgotten by the contemporary social sciences, that is, the Belgium polymath Adolphe Quetelet. Focusing on his main work, Sur l'homme et le développement de ses facultés, ou Essai de physique sociale, the study underscores how the secularization of theological principles within the realm of science was important to the construction of Quetelet's work. His dual engagement in science and politics is pertinent here, as he was the main nineteenth-century force behind the incorporation of statistics as a science essential to the State's ability to govern its people. He also played a relevant role in the realization of the hegemonic political project of modernity, biopolitics, and its influence in the field of biomedicine in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
