RESUMO

The word steroid - we all know these are life saving drugs. Steroids have different meanings. Steroids are chemicals, often hormones that your body makes naturally. They help your organs, tissues, and cells do their jobs. Steroids can also refer to man-made medicines. We all know misuse of anything could be fatal. Nowadays anabolic steroids are very common especially in young adults going to gym for making muscles. Gym trainers are giving them steroids by saying and assuring that it will help them to build their muscle and body mass index. In some cases it can become life threatening too. Here in this article I’m going to present such case in which a young boy of just 25 years of age has taken such steroids and lands himself in deep trouble. He was healthy but the moment he joined gym, everything was ruined. He was diagnosed with AVN (Avascular Necrosis) of hip joint. AVN is a deadly pathology in which death of bone tissue occur due to lack of blood supply. Now he is not able to walk on his own and using wheel chair. So this article is basically awareness to young generation who are running behind this stuff and making their life hell.

ABSTRACT Equigan is an anabolic steroid that has been developed for veterinary use and derived from endogenous sex hormone testosterone that plays a key role in the development of male reproductive tissue as well as in puberty and spermatogenesis. The current study is aimed to investigate the possible prophylactic effect of star anise extracts (SAE) on the toxicity of rat testes, sexual hormones alternations, sperm count, sperm abnormalities and testicular DNA damage by Equigan. Forty adult male rats were equally divided into four groups (1st Control group, 2nd SAE group, 3rd Equigan and 4th Equigan+SAE group). Food and fluid intakes, relative body weight, potassium, chloride, phosphorous, non-progressive and immotile sperms were significantly increased in Equigan group as compared to control group. In contrast; relative testes weight, sodium, magnesium, total calcium, testosterone, FSH, LH, PRL, sperm count, progressive motility, and viability showed a significant decrease in Equigan group as compared to control groups. The relative weight of epididymis, seminal vesicles, prostates and serum calcium ions didn't change significantly in different studied groups. Co-administration of SAE with Equigan improved the sexual toxicity, electrolyte alternations, sperm count, abnormalities and DNA damage induced by Equigan.

ABSTRACT Objective This study investigated the possible blood changes in wistar rats elderly with and without treatment with anabolic steroids submitted physical training. Materials and methods Elderly rats (32) were divided into four groups: normal (N), treated normal (NT), diabetic (D) and treated diabetic (DT). They were submitted to 20 sessions of swimming with overload (5% body weight), 40 min/day for four weeks. The NT and DT groups received application of testosterone twice a week. At the end of the sessions, the animals were subjected to swimming until exhaustion and then killed for removal of blood and visceral fat. We evaluated maximum swim time, weight of visceral fat, erythrogram, leukogram, lipidogram and serum levels of glucose, lactate, aspartate aminotransferase and creatine kinase. The results were compared using one-way ANOVA followed by the post hoc Tukey test. Results In elderly diabetic rats, the use of anabolic associated with physical training in older rats resulted in improvement in erythrogram, lipidogram and physical performance for high-intensity aerobic exercise. However, it was related to changes in leukocyte count, probably associated with inflammation. Conclusion The combination of the use of testosterone with physical training, followed by maximal effort test caused changes hematological and biochemical can be associated with improvement in physiological characteristics, with increase of the swimming time and decrease of visceral fat levels, improvement in aerobic metabolism of fatty acids and glucose in normal and diabetic animals.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos e os métodos de aplicação dos aditivos foliares decanoato de nandrolona (esteroide anabolizante) a 0,5%, ácido ascórbico (vitamina C) a 0,5%, palmitato de retinol (vitamina A) a 0,5% e acetato de retinol (vitamina A) a 1,0% em alguns parâmetros biológicos do bicho-da-seda. No experimento do modo de aplicação (pulverização foliar antes do fornecimento, depois do fornecimento e por imersão antes do fornecimento) foram utilizados: decanoato de nandrolona 0,5%; ácido ascórbico 0,5%; e palmitato de retinol 0,5%. No ensaio de desenvolvimento do inseto foram avaliados: duração e viabilidade larval; peso de casulo; taxa de encasulamento; teor líquido de seda; longevidade de adultos; número de ovos por fêmea; e duração do período de subida ao bosque. Para o modo de aplicação determinaram-se: ganho de peso, comprimento, diâmetro do tórax e diâmetro do abdome de lagartas de 5º ínstar, assim como comprimento, diâmetro e peso de glândula sericígena. Os resultados mostraram que, apesar de o ácido ascórbico proporcionar os melhores valores para o desenvolvimento corpóreo das lagartas, este não corresponde a incrementos significativos na produção; o palmitato de retinol não melhora o desenvolvimento das lagartas; o acetato de retinol e o palmitato de retinol prolongam o período larval, sem, no entanto, alterar significativamente os parâmetros de produção; a imersão de folhas antes do fornecimento às lagartas é mais viável para a aplicação dos aditivos.(AU)


The present study was aimed to evaluate the effects of different methods of foliar application of the additives nandrolone decanoate (anabolic steroid) 0,5%; ascorbic acid (vitamin C) 0,5%; retinol palmitate (vitamin A) 0,5%; and retinol acetate (vitamin A) 1,0% on some biological parameters of the silkworm. The experiment of application method (foliar spray prior to delivery, after delivery and soaking before feeding) used: nandrolone decanoate 0.5%, ascorbic acid 0.5%, and retinol palmitate 0.5%. The test of insect development evaluated: duration and larval viability, weight of cocoon, cocooning rate, liquid silk content, adult longevity, number of eggs per female and rising up time. For the application of foliar additives, the following were determined: weight gain, length, diameter and abdomen diameter of fifth instar larvae, and length, diameter and weight of silk gland. The results showed that although ascorbic acid provided the best value for the development of the caterpillars body, it did not correspond to significant increase in production; retinol palmitate did not affect the larvae body development; retinol acetate and retinol palmitate prolong the larval period, without, however, significantly altering the production parameters. The immersion method of leaves before being delivered to the caterpillars is the most feasible for the foliar application of additives.(AU)

O presente estudo avaliou a influência de diferentes doses de decanoato de nandrolona (DN) associado ao Treinamento de Força (TF) sobre o fenótipo de fibras e área de secção transversa (AST) do músculo extensor longo dos dedos (EDL) em ratos "Wistar". Os animais foram divididos em sete grupos: controle (GC) e grupos de acordo com a concentração de DN (0,1, 1, 2, 5, 10 e 20 mg/kg) administrada intramuscular 3 vezes/semana. O TF consistiu de saltos em meio líquido (carga 50-70% do peso corporal) 3x/semana, durante cinco semanas. A associação do TF e DN promoveu ação modulatória sobre os tipos de fibras. Houve hipertrofia das fibras de contração rápida (tipo II) em comparação com as fibras de contração lenta (tipo I). Em conclusão, apesar da associação do TF com DN aumentar a AST muscular e alterar o fenótipo das fibras, não houve efeito gradual das doses mais altas.


The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of different doses of nandrolone decanoate (ND) associated with Strength Training (ST) on the phenotype of fibers and cross-sectional area (CSA) of the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) in Wistar rats. The animals were divided into seven groups: control (CG) and the groups according to the dose of ND administered (0,1, 1, 2, 5, 10 e 20 mg/kg). The ST consisted of water jumping with loads of 50-70% of their body mass, three times per week during five weeks. The association of ST with ND promoted a modulatory role on the muscle fiber types. There was a hypertrophy of fast twitch fibers (type II) as compared with slow twitch (type I). In conclusion, although the association of ST with ND increased muscle CSA and modified fiber phenotype, there was no additional effect of higher doses.

A busca do aprimoramento no condicionamento físico é notória, visando melhorar a performance atlética ou com objetivos estéticos. Para isso, nem sempre se utilizam apenas técnicas de treinamento, sendo crescente a utilização de agentes ilícitos, como exemplo, os hormônios anabolizantes e substâncias estimulantes. Em relação aos hormônios esteróides anabólicos, sua utilização está alcançando níveis extremos entre os praticantes de atividades físicas, geralmente utilizadas de maneira incorreta, com doses inadequadas, colocando em risco a saúde do usuário. Esteróides anabólicos são derivados sintéticos da testosterona, tendo propriedades androgênicas e anabólicas, sua administração potencializa a síntese protéica e causa a hipertrofia da musculatura esquelética, respostas intensificadas quando combinadas com o exercício de força. Além da utilização no esporte, os esteróides anabólicos são empregados na clínica médica em situações onde é necessária a estimulação da síntese protéica.


The search for the improvement in the physical conditioning is widely known, aiming at improving the athletic performance or at aesthetic objetives. To get that, people do not always use only training techniques, being the use of agents, most of them illicit, for example, the anabolic hormone and stimulant substances. In relation to the use of anabolic steroids hormones we can say it is reaching extreme levels among people who practice physical activities, usually used wrongly, in inadequate doses, putting at risks the user's health. Anabolics steroids are synthetic from testosterone, having androgenic and anabolic properties, theis administrations increase the proteic synthesis and causes the skeletal musculature hypertrophy and these answers are highlighted when combined with strength exercise. Besides being used in sports, we find great utility in clinical medicine to the anabolic steroids, being used in situations in which it is necessary proteic synthesis increasing.

The effect of semi-synthetic steroid trenbolone acetate (TBA) on the ornamental fish Poecilia reticulata (guppy) was studied. The steroid at a dose of 300 mg/kg feed was administered to 30 days old juvenile specimens during 60 days. Forty days after treatment was ended, an evaluation aimed to determine the steroid residual effect was undertaken. Survival, masculinization ratio and the drug anabolic effect were analyzed. Results showed TBA to be effective to induce masculinization, differing (P < 0.001) with the control group, which registered 32% males and 68% females. TBA turned out to be an excellent anabolic as well, since treated fish showed weight increase, a larger body and an increased size of caudal fin. The steroid did not cause any damage on the treated population. The survival factor was 93.3% for the treated fish as compared to 83% for the control group.


Se investigó el efecto del esteroide semisintético acetato de trembolona (ATB) en el pez de ornato Poecilia reticulata (guppy). Especímenes juveniles de 30 días de edad fueron tratados con el esteroide a dosis de 300 mg/kg de alimento durante 60 días. Al término del tratamiento, 40 días después, se estimó el efecto residual del esteroide. Se analizó la sobrevivencia, la proporción de peces masculinizados, así como el efecto anabólico. Los resultados indicaron que el ATB es eficaz para inducir la masculinización, a diferencia del grupo testigo, donde se registraron 32% de machos. Asimismo, el ATB tuvo un efecto anabólico, ya que los peces tratados mostraron mayor peso y talla e incremento de la aleta caudal. El esteroide no causó daño en la población tratada, al sobrevivir 93.3% de los peces, comparado con 83% del grupo testigo.

RESUMO

A utilização de recursos ergogênicos, principalmente farmacológicos como os esteróides anabolizantes sintéticos, tem como objetivo proporcionar vantagem física e, ou estética ao usuário. Geralmente sua utilização está associada a esportes de força, pois, sua ação está relacionada ao aumento da síntese protéica gerando assim o aumento da massa muscular, melhorando a performance atlética ou atingindo o “corpo ideal”. O uso indiscriminado e os efeitos dos esteróides anabolizantes no esporte tem sido discutidos com freqüência, uma vez que a dosagem utilizada geralmente é incorreta, pois, a indicação nem sempre é feita por profi ssionais habilitados, possibilitando a utilização de doses excessivas, colocando em risco a saúde do usuário. Apesar de existirem muitos estudos indicando os possíveis efeitos benéficos dos esteróides anabolizantes, uma vez que também são utilizados na clínica médica, é importante salientar os efeitos indesejados produzidos pelo uso inadequado destas drogas.


The utilization of the ergogenic resource, mainly pharmacological like synthetical anabolic steroid, supply physical or an esthetics advantage to the user. Usually, its utilization is associated to strength sports, because it afford the protein synthesis rate, resulting in the muscular mass increase, improving the athletic performance or getting the perfect body. The abusive use of anabolic steroid at sports has been argued frequently, because the dosage is always wrong and the utilization is never done by qualifi ed professionals, making possible the high dosages utilization, putting on risk the user’s health. There are a lot of researches indicating the possible anabolic steroid useful effects, once they are used at medical clinic, is important emphasize the undesirable effects made by the wrong use of these drugs.

Protein-energy malnutrition is frequently observed in CAPD patients and is closely correlated with morbidity and mortality. We investigated the effects of AS on nutritional parameters in malnourished CAPD patients. Eleven CAPD patients who were proved to be malnourished by biochemical and anthropometric measurements, not admitted for 2 months recently, received intramuscularly 200mg of Nandrolone Decanoate, monthly. After AS was administered for more than 12 weeks, the nutritional parameters were checked. The mean age of patients was 53.5+/-9.8(SD) years, the sex ratio was 4:7. The mean duration of CAPD was 34.5+/-23.2 months. Three patients were diabetics. The mean duration of AS administered was 22.0+/-3.6 weeks. Eight of eleven patients improved their subjective symptoms such as appetite and muscle strength. There were significant increases in hemoglobin(7.0+/-0.9 vs. 7.8+/-1.1g/dl), hematocrit(20.3+/-2.8 vs. 23.0+/-2.8%), insulin-like growth factor I(165.9+/-71.6 vs. 207.1+/-69.5ng/ml), prealbumin(30.1+/-11.0 vs. 39.3+/-9.1mg/dl), transferrin(205.4+/-48.8 vs. 239.6+/-47.7mg/dl) and nPCR(0.75+/-0.15 vs. 0.84+/-0.15g/kg/day)(P<0.05). There were no changes in albumin, total lymphocyte, cholesterol, weeklky Kt/Vurea, weekly creatinine clearance and urea nitrogen appearance. On anthropometric measurements, midarm muscle circumference(21.8+/-3.2 vs. 22.7+/-3.5cm, P<0.05) and % lean body mass(57.6+/-12.7 vs. 60.5+/-11.4%, P<0.05) were increased, but triceps skinfold thickness, and body mass index were not changed. Edema was observed in 8 patients and acne was noted in a patient. Severe edema and ultrafiltration failure were observed in 2 patients. The mean time that edema developed was 17.6 4.6 weeks. In conclusion, AS seems to be useful in correcting malnutrition with their protein anabolic effect in malnourished CAPD patients.

To evaluate the effect of anabolic steroid(AS) on body composition and protein metabolism in malnourished CAPD patients, 7 CAPD patients who were proved to be malnourished by subjective global assessment received 200mg of AS, nandrolone decanoate, by intramuscular route monthly for 5 months. We analyzed the body composition, biochemical nutritional markers, plasma and dialysate amino acids(AA) before and after administration of AS. The mean age was 53.6+/-11.5 years, the sex ratio was 2:5, and the duration of CAPD was 28.5+/-18.7 months. Two patients were diabetics. Five months after AS administration, %lean body mass seemed to increase from 52.6+/-11.7 to 57.3+/-11.0%(P>0.05), but there were no significant changes in body weight and body mass index. Serum insulin-like growth factor-I (172.4+/-88.5 vs. 204.1+/-85.8ng/ml, P<0.05) and transferrin(213.6+/-55.4 vs. 239.0+/-55.3mg/dl, P<0.05) were significantly increased, and serum total CO2(31.1+/-4.5 vs. 25.9+/-2.5mM/L, P<0.05) were significantly decreased. Urea nitrogen appearance(4.0+/-2.0 vs. 3.6+/-1.6g/ day) seemed to be decreased. Both plasma essential AA(EAA) level(738.3+/-206.5 vs. 492.5+/-187.2micromol/L, P<0.05) and peritoneal EAA loss(565.0+/-186.1 vs. 377.4+/-113.9micromol/day, P<0.05) decreased significantly after administration. Plasma total and non- essential amino acids(NEAA) level tended to be increased and peritoneal total and NEAA loss seemed to be decreased without statistical significance. In conclusion, AS seems to have anabolic effect and be useful in the correction of malnutrition in CAPD patients.
