RESUMEN Los residuos sólidos urbanos (RSU), al ser vertidos sin tratamiento apropiado, ocasionan daños severos al medio ambiente influyendo en la calidad de vida de la población; por esta razón actualmente se le presta atención al adecuado manejo de estos residuos. En este trabajo se estudia la reducción de la fracción orgánica (FORSU), de residuos sólidos generados por un grupo poblacional, tomando como referente una de las residencias estudiantiles de la Universidad de Oriente. La generación de FORSU en la residencia es de 0,06 kg/habdía, con un contenido de sólidos totales de 30,9 ± 5,3 %, de los cuáles el 81,7 ± 0,6 % son sólidos volátiles. Se evalúa la digestión anaerobia la FORSU, mediante un sistema de tratamiento en dos etapas. La primera etapa se realiza en un reactor en lote de lecho escurrido, que permitió un tratamiento discontinuo e in situ de la FORSU, en co-digestión anaerobia con un 25 % de estiércol vacuno. En una segunda etapa, se evalúa el tratamiento anaerobio para los lixiviados que se generan en el reactor en lote, empleando un reactor UASB. En el reactor en lote se alcanzó una remoción de sólidos volátiles del 44,1 %, mientras que en el reactor UASB se removió un 81,2 % de DQO. Como resultado la evaluación del sistema de tratamiento, se alcanzó una productividad total de 5,37 LCH4-kgSV -1-d-1.


ABSTRACT Urban solid waste (MSW), when are discharged without proper treatment, causes severe damage to the environment, influencing the population's quality of life. For this reason, attention is currently paid to the proper handling of this waste. This paper studies the reduction of the organic fraction of solid waste (OFMSW), generated by a population group, taking as reference one of the Student Residences of the Universidad de Oriente. The generation of OFMSW in the residence is 0.06 kg/inhabday, with a total solid content of 30.9 ± 5.3%, of which 81.7 ± 0.6% are volatile solids. The anaerobic digestion of OFMSW is evaluated through a two-stage treatment system. The first stage is performed in a drained-bed batch reactor, which allowed discontinuous and in-situ treatment of OFMSW, in anaerobic co-digestion with 25% of cow manure. In a second stage, the anaerobic treatment for the leachates generated in the batch reactor is evaluated, using a UASB reactor. In the batch reactor a removal of volatile solids of 44.1% was achieved, while in the UASB reactor 81.2% of COD was removed. As a result of the evaluation of the treatment system, total productivity of 5.37 L CH4 -kgSV -1-d-1 was achieved.

RESUMEN La vinaza es un residuo derivado de la producción de alcohol carburante, que posee elevada carga orgánica disuelta (46%), bajo pH que oscila entre 3-5 y alta demanda química de oxigeno (DQO) de 200-300 mgDQO/L, dichas características hacen de la vinaza un potencial contaminante. Hoy en día, se han buscado métodos que contribuyan a un adecuado manejo de este residuo, como su aprovechamiento para generar energía. En esta investigación se determinó el efecto de la concentración de vinaza y el tipo de lodo inoculante sobre la tasa global de producción de biogás, actividad metanogénica y reducción de carga orgánica durante el proceso de digestión anaerobia. Se utilizaron lodos como fuente de inóculo, provenientes de una PTAR, de una laguna de vinaza, y de laguna de oxidación y enfriamiento; la producción de biogás se cuantificó con la técnica de desplazamiento de líquido, se determinó la actividad metanogénica específica (AME), se determinó la tasa de remoción de DQO y sólidos totales y se aislaron microorganismos metanogénicos. Se encontró que la concentración de 90% de vinaza con lodos de la laguna de oxidación obtuvo los mejores rendimientos, se cuantificó 674.5 mL de biogás durante 1 8 días en un volumen de trabajo de 400 mL y se calculó la AME de 0.2 gDQOCH4/gSSV.d. Se demostró que a partir de la digestión anaerobia reduce un 25.2% de la DQO y 22.4% de sólidos; los resultados del análisis microbiológico permitieron evidenciar la presencia de microorganismos metanogénicos en el biorreactor anaerobio.


ABSTRACT Sugarcane vinasse is a residue derived from the production of fuel alcohol, that has a high dissolved organic load (46%), pH ranging from 3 to 5, and chemical oxygen demand (COD) from 200 to 300 mg/l. These characteristics make of the vinasse a potential contaminant. Therefore, methods have been sought that contribute to an adequate management of this waste, such as its use to generate energy. In this research, the process of anaerobic digestion of sugarcane vinasse and sludge as inoculant was evaluated based on the global rate of biogas production, methanogenic activity and reduction of organic load. Different concentrations of vinasse and different sources of sludge were tested; WWTP biosolids, vinasse sludge, and sludge from oxidation and cooling lagoon. Biogas production was quantified by technique liquid displacement, was determined the specific methanogenic activity (SMA), removal of COD and total solids were also determined, and isolation of methanogenic microorganisms. It was determined that the concentration of 90% of vinasse with sludge from the oxidation and cooling lagoon produced the highest yield; 674.5 mL of biogas was quantified during 18 days in a work volume of 400 mL and the SMA of 0.2 g DQOCH4 / gSSV.d was calculated. It was demonstrated that the anaerobic digestion it reduces 25.2% of COD and 22.4% of solids, the results of the microbiological analysis allowed to demonstrate the presence of methanogenic microorganisms in the anaerobic biorreactor.

ABSTRACT The present paper aimed to evaluate the impact of microaeration on both the removal performance of some emerging micropollutants (pharmaceuticals, hormones, and bisphenol A) and the microbial community structure of an anaerobic reactor treating synthetic wastewater. Under anaerobic conditions, the removal efficiencies of the micropollutants were very low (< 10%). However, the microaeration (1.0 mL air·min-1 at 27 °C and 1 atm, equivalent to a QAIR/QINF ratio of 0.1) expressively improved the removal efficiencies of all compounds (> 50%). Therefore, supplementing anaerobic reactors with low amounts of oxygen seems to be an interesting strategy to enhance the removal of the micropollutants tested. However, further studies should be carried out with other compounds in order to evaluate the wide applicability of microaeration to different classes of micropollutants in lab- and full-scale treatment systems. Concerning the microbiota structure, both bacterial and archaeal communities were not compromised by the different operational conditions and preserved their functional organization with high richness during the whole experiment.


RESUMO O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o impacto da microaeração tanto no desempenho de remoção de alguns micropoluentes emergentes (fármacos, hormônios e bisfenol A) quanto na estrutura da comunidade microbiana de um reator anaeróbio tratando uma água residuária sintética. Sob condições anaeróbias, as eficiências de remoção dos micropoluentes foram muito baixas (< 10%). Entretanto, a microaeração (1,0 mL de ar·min-1 a 27 °C e 1 atm, equivalente a uma relação QAR/QAF de 0,1) melhorou expressivamente as eficiências de remoção de todos os compostos (> 50%). Portanto, a suplementação de reatores anaeróbios com baixas quantidades de oxigênio parece ser uma estratégia interessante para melhorar a remoção dos micropoluentes testados. Entretanto, mais estudos devem ser realizados com outros compostos para avaliar a ampla aplicabilidade da microaeração a diferentes classes de micropoluentes em sistemas de tratamento em escala laboratorial e real. Com relação à estrutura da microbiota, tanto as comunidades de bactérias quanto as de arqueias não foram comprometidas pelas diferentes condições operacionais e preservaram sua organização funcional com elevada riqueza durante todo o experimento.

The brewing industry generates large amounts of wastewater which are released into surface water after treatment. The aim of this study is to evaluate the performance of the anaerobic treatment of brewery wastewaters in a UASB bioreactor containing activated sludge. After six-weeks operation, 30 samples were taken. Physicochemical analyzes were carried out on activated sludge (T, pH, VFA) and raw and treated waters (T, pH, AT, CAT, TSS, and COD). These analyzes showed that the conditions of the environment were favorable to an optimal growth of the bacteria: temperatures and pH were mostly mesophilic. the ionization of VFA was continuous and their concentration increased at the exit of the bioreactor thus revealing a significant conversion of organic materials by bacteria. The average values ​​of the physicochemical parameters of the raw and treated wastewaters respectively increased from 31.5°C to 35°C for the temperature, from 8.9 to 7.5 for the pH, to 5.54 mg/l at 0 for AT, from 12.35 mg/l to 3.45 mg/l for TAC, from 234.08 mg/l to 129.61 mg/l for TSS and from 1637 mg/l to 282, 46 mg/l for COD. The effectiveness of the treatment allowed a COD reduction ranging from 70 to 94%.

ABSTRACT The main objective of this study was to evaluate the anaerobic conversion of vinasse into biomethane with gradual increase in organic loading rate (OLR) in two upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors, R1 and R2, with volumes of 40.5 and 21.5 L in the mesophilic temperature range. The UASB reactors were operated for 230 days with a hydraulic detection time (HDT) of 2.8 d (R1) and 2.8-1.8 d (R2). The OLR values applied in the reactors were 0.2-7.5 g totalCOD (L d)−1 in R1 and 0.2-11.5 g totalCOD (L d)−1 in R2. The average total chemical oxygen demand (totalCOD) removal efficiencies ranged from 49% to 82% and the average conversion efficiencies of the removed totalCOD into methane were 48-58% in R1 and 39-65% in R2. The effluent recirculation was used for an OLR above 6 g totalCOD (L d)−1 in R1 and 8 gtotalCOD (L d)−1 in R2 and was able to maintain the pH of the influent in R1 and R2 in the range from 6.5 to 6.8. However, this caused a decrease for 53-39% in the conversion efficiency of the removed totalCOD into methane in R2 because of the increase in the recalcitrant COD in the influent. The largest methane yield values were 0.181 and 0.185 (L) CH4 (gtotal COD removed)−1 in R1 and R2, respectively. These values were attained after 140 days of operation with an OLR of 5.0-7.5 g totalCOD (L d)−1 and total COD removal efficiencies around 70 and 80%.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar os efluentes gerados em cabines de pintura de uma indústria moveleira e avaliar a eficiência de sistemas biológicos (anaeróbio e aeróbio) para o seu tratamento. O efluente industrial apresentou elevado teor de matéria orgânica (DQO total de 634 a 2.790 mg.L-1; DBO5 total de 360 a 972 mg.L-1) e baixos teores de macronutrientes (NTK de 1,9 mg.L-1 e Ptotal de 0,5 mg.L-) e metais tóxicos. Os ensaios de tratabilidade em reator UASB (~25ºC e tempo de detenção hidráulica - TDH = 10 horas), indicaram uma eficiência máxima de remoção de matéria orgânica de 90 por cento na composição volumétrica 70:30 (efluente industrial:esgoto sanitário). A alimentação do reator UASB só com efluente industrial resultou em acúmulo de ácidos graxos voláteis e inibição microbiana, mas o uso de pós-tratamento aeróbio (TDH = 96h) garantiu elevada eficiência global (~88 por cento) de remoção de matéria orgânica.


The main objective of this work was to characterize the wastewater from the dying hood of a woven furniture industry, and to assess the efficiency of biological processes (anaerobic and aerobic) for its treatment. The physical-chemical characterization of the industrial wastewater showed a high organic matter content (total COD from 634 to 2,790 mg.L-1; total BOD5 from 360 to 972 mg.L-1), low content of macronutrients (NTK of 1.9 mg.L-1 and P of 0.5 mg.L-1) and toxic metals. The anaerobic degradation tests in a bench-scale UASB reactor (25ºC and hydraulic retention time - HRT = 10 hours) showed that a maximum removal efficiency of 90 percent was obtained when the reactor was fed with 30 percent raw sewage and 70 percent industrial wastewater. The feeding of UASB reactor with only industrial wastewater resulted in volatile fatty acids accumulation and microbial inhibition; however, the use of aerobic post-treatment (HRT = 96 hours) granted a high (~88 percent) organic matter removal efficiency.

A água residuária do café (ARC), originada no processamento dos frutos do cafeeiro, produz quantidade considerável de biogás que pode e deve ser utilizado como fonte de energia alternativa e complementar. Neste trabalho, foi estudada a variação da concentração de metano do biogás produzido a partir das ARC, por tratamento anaeróbio, em reator UASB, em escala laboratorial. As amostras foram coletadas durante 86 dias. As análises da concentração de metano foram realizadas por cromatografia gás-sólido (CGS). A produção de biogás e de metano, foi de 0,545 a 0,602 m³ kg-1DQO removida e de 0,382 a 0,421 m³ kg-1 DQO removida, respectivamente. Os resultados da concentração de metano no biogás variaram de 48,60 a 68,14 por cento, influenciados pela variação dos parâmetros temperatura, pH, acidez e compostos fenólicos presentes nas ARC. Como havia sido previsto, as maiores concentrações de metano foram verificadas nos períodos em que o pH estava mais próximo da neutralidade.


The wastewater produced from wet coffee processing (WCP), originated from the coffee fruits, can produce great quantities of biogas, which, in turn, can be also used as an alternative or complementary energy source. In this research, we studied the variation of methane concentration produced by WCP in a laboratory-scale UASB reactor with anaerobic treatment. The samples were collected during a period of 86 days. The methane concentration was measured through gas solid chromatography (GSC). The production of biogas and methane ranged from 0.545 to 0.602 m³ kg-1DQO removed and from 0.382 a 0.421 m³ kg-1 DQO removed, respectively. Methane presence in the biogas ranged from 48.60 percent to 68.14 percent. This variation was influenced by the following parameters: temperature, pH, acidity, and phenol compounds present in the WCP. As expected, greater concentrations of methane gas were verified during the periods when the pH close to neutral.

O trabalho investigou a influência do uso do extrato de levedura, fonte dos mediadores redox riboflavina e nicotinamida, na remoção de cor de solução de corante azo Drimaren Azul HF-RL em condições anaeróbias. O trabalho envolveu a execução de ensaios em batelada, em frascos-reatores mantidos a 25 ºC, incubados com o azo-corante e lodo anaeróbio na presença e ausência de fontes de carbono (extrato de levedura ou glicose) e de mediadores redox (riboflavina ou extrato de levedura). O monitoramento da variação temporal de cor, a demanda química de oxigênio (DQO) e ácidos graxos voláteis (AGV) mostraram que a adição de extrato de levedura (0,5 g/L) resultou em eficiências de remoção de cor de 80 a 85 por cento nas primeiras 24 horas de incubação, e que os produtos da degradação do azo-corante foram tóxicos para todo o consórcio anaeróbio, o que resultou em baixas eficiências de remoção de DQO na presença e ausência do extrato de levedura. Os resultados indicaram, ainda, que as eficiências de remoção de cor foram inferiores a 30 por cento na presença de apenas glicose (fonte de carbono) ou riboflavina (mediador redox), indicando que o extrato de levedura atuou simultaneamente como fonte de carbono e de mediadores redox.


This paper investigated the influence of using yeast extract, which is the source of redox mediators riboflavin and nicotinamide, in the decolorization of solutions containing the azo dye Drimaren Blue HF-RL in anaerobic conditions. It involved the incubation of serum bottles kept at 25 ºC and inoculated with the azo-dye, and anaerobic sludge in the presence and absence of carbon source (glucose or yeast extract) and redox mediators (riboflavin and yeast extract). The monitoring of color, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and volatile fatty acids (VFA) showed that the addition of yeast extract (0.5 g/L) resulted in 80 to 85 percent color removal in the first 24 hours of incubation; and that the metabolites of dye degradation were toxic to the anaerobic microorganisms, which led to low COD removal efficiencies either in the presence or absence of yeast extract. The results also showed that the efficiencies of color removal were below 30 percent in the presence of only glucose or riboflavin, indicating that the yeast extract acted simultaneously as source of carbon and redox mediators.

The Rayon grade pulp (RGP) drain effluent of pulp and paper mill was studied to find out pollutant loading and its control measures by low cost and efficient treatment method. Upflow anaerobic fixed packed bed reactor (UAFPBR) with brick ballasts as packing material was used for this purpose. This was compared with conventional anaerobic treatment method. The digested slurry was taken as inoculum from the active cow dung biogas plant. After stabilization of the reactors the reduction in pollutant loading was found to be higher in UAFPBR than conventional anaerobic reactor (CAR). Hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 12 hr was optimum for the treatment of effluent when 74.5% COD and 81% BOD reduction was obtained. 30% inoculum concentration was best for the anaerobic treatment of RGP colour drain effluent. The maximum biogas production (1.37 l l-1 of effluent) was when the effluent was inoculated with 30% seeding material. Thus, UAFPBR system was very efficient in terms of BOD, COD, TSS and TDS removal from RGP drain of paper mills in ambient environmental conditions.

In this work, an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR) was operated for 8 months to treat low strength sewage with high suspended organic matter content. Three phases of operation with increasing organic loading rates (OLR) were performed: 0.4 kg COD/m³ x d (phase I), 0 .8 kg COD/m³ x d (phase II) and 1.2 kg COD/m³ x d (phase III). Adequate stability parameters (pH, total alkalinity) were obtained through all three experimental phases. During phases I and II, the removal efficiencies of organic matter (expressed as total chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total suspended solids ranged between 50-60 percent. However, these values decreased to 15-25 percent in phase III. In addition, a non-complex model, including hydrolysis, acidogenesis and methanogenesis, was applied to predict the reactor behavior.

A presente investigação teve como objetivo estudar o efeito do nitrato na descoloração de corantes em reatores anaeróbios suplementados ou não com mediadores redox. Dois reatores anaeróbios em paralelo foram operados com tempo de detenção hidráulica (TDH) de dez horas, utilizando-se etanol como cossubstrato. Os resultados provaram que os reatores eram eficientes na remoção de cor, sendo o composto etanol um eficiente doador de elétrons para sustentar a redução do corante azo nos reatores mesofílicos. O mediador redox AQDS aumentou as taxas de redução do corante azo, mas o seu efeito não foi tão marcante comparado aos experimentos realizados anteriormente. Contrariamente às hipóteses levantadas de que a adição de nitrato poderia interferir nas taxas de remoção de cor e propriedades catalíticas do mediador redox, não se verificou nenhum efeito desse composto.


This paper aimed at evaluating the effect of nitrate on anaerobic azo dye reduction by using mesophilic bioreactors, in the absence and in the presence of redox mediators. Two anaerobic bioreactors were operated in parallel with a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of ten hours; ethanol was used as co-substrate. The results showed that the bioreactors were efficient on dye reduction, and the ethanol showed to be a good electron donor to sustain it. The redox mediator AQDS increased the rates of reductive decolourisation, but its effect was not so remarkable compared to the previous experiments conducted. Contrary to the raised hypothesis that nitrate addition could decrease the colour removal efficiency and catalytic properties of the redox mediators, no effect of nitrate was observed in the bioreactors.

Estudou-se a produção de biogás proveniente do tratamento das águas residuárias do processamento por via úmida do café (ARC) coco em sistema de tratamento anaeróbio em escala laboratorial. O sistema foi composto de um tanque de acidificação e equalização (TAE), um reator anaeróbio de manta de lodo e fluxo ascendente (UASB), uma lagoa aerada facultativa (LAF), um equalizador de pressão e um gasômetro. O tratamento foi realizado durante 190 dias e o pH foi controlado por certos períodos de tempo, pela adição de NaOH no TAE ou no reator UASB. No reator UASB, os valores máximos e mínimos obtidos na entrada foram de 235 a 7.064 mg.L-1 para DQO; 200 a 3.913 mg.L-1 para DBO5, 500 a 11.153 mg.L-1 para STV e 4,57 a 7,75 para o pH. Na saída do reator UASB, os valores foram de 39 a 2.333 mg.L-1 para DQO; 15 a 1.300 mg.L-1 para DBO5, 272 a 2.749 mg.L-1 para STV e 6,16 a 7,93 para o pH. Os valores mínimos e máximos de vazão afluente foram de 0,18 a 1,56 L.h-1. O biogás apresentou uma produção teórica de 0,545 a de 0,602 m³.kg-1DBO5 e porcentagem de metano de 48,60 a 68,14 por cento.


It was studied the biogas production through the treatment of the wet processing coffee wastewaters (ARC) in an anaerobic treatment system in laboratorial scale. The system used was composed by one acidification and equalization tank (TAE), one anaerobic upflow sludge blanket reactor (UASB), one facultative aerated pond, one equalization tank and one gas tank. The treatment was carried out for 190 days and the pH was controlled for some periods by adding NaOH inside of the TAE or in the UASB. In the UASB reactor the maximum and minimum values obtained in the inlet were 235 to 7064 mg.L-1 for COD; 200 to 3913 mg.L-1 for BOD5, 500 to 11.153 mg.L-1 for TVS and 4,57 to 7,75 for pH. In the outlet of the UASB, the values were 39 to 2333 mg.L-1 for COD; 15 to 1300 mg.L-1 for BOD5, 272 to 2749 mg.L-1 for TVS and 6,16 to 7,93 for pH. The minimum and maximum values of the inlet flow were 0,18 to 1,56 L.h-1. The biogas presented a theoretical production of the 0,545 to 0,602 m³.Kg-1BOD5 and methane percentage from 48,60 to 68,14 percent.

Avaliou-se o potencial de uso reator anaeróbio operado em bateladas seqüenciais com biomassa imobilizada (ASBBR), em escala piloto, no tratamento de água residuária industrial contendo elevadas concentrações de sulfato. O ASBBR, com volume total de 1.2 m³, foi preenchido com carvão mineral como meio suporte para imobilização da biomassa (leito fixo). Foram aplicadas cargas de 0,15; 0,30; 0,65; 1,30 e 1,90 kg SO4-2/ciclo (ou batelada) com duração de 48 h, correspondendo, respectivamente, às concentrações de sulfato no afluente de 0,25; 0,50; 1,0; 2,0 e 3,0 gSO4-2.l-1. Utilizou-se etanol como doador de elétrons para a redução do sulfato. O reator foi operado à temperatura ambiente (29±8ºC), tendo sido obtidas eficiências médias na redução de sulfato entre 88 e 92 por cento em 92 ciclos (275 dias). Os resultados obtidos permitem concluir que o uso de reatores ASBBR constitui-se em alternativa eficiente para a remoção de sulfatos de águas residuárias com características semelhantes às utilizadas neste trabalho.


The potential use of an anaerobic sequencing batch biofilm reactor (ASBBR) in pilot-scale for the treatment of a sulfate-rich industrial wastewater was evaluated. The pilot 1.2 m³ ASBBR reactor was filled with mineral coal for biomass immobilization (fixed film). The sulfate loading rates applied were 0.15; 0.30; 0.65; 1.30 and 1.90 kg SO4-2/cycle (or batch). Each cycle lasted 48 h. The influent concentrations were, respectively, 0.25; 0.50; 1.0; 2.0 and 3.0 gSO4-2.l-1. Ethanol was used as electron donor for sulfate reduction. The reactor operated at ambient temperature (29±8ºC), and the mean efficiencies of sulfate removal were in the range 88 to 92 percent in the 92 run cycles. The total operating period comprised 275 days. Based on the results obtained in this research, it could be concluded that the ASBBR can be an efficient alternative for the removal of sulfate from other industrial wastewaters with similar characteristics.
