RESUMO

The nature of memory and the search for its localization have been a subject of interest since Antiquity. After millennia of hypothetical concepts the core memory-related structures finally began to be identified through modern scientifically-based methods at the diencephalic, hippocampal, and neocortical levels. However, there was a clear temporal delay between the finding of these anatomic structures ignoring their function, and their identification related to memory function. Thus, the core structures begun to be identified with a pure anatomical view in the late Middle Ages on, while the memory function related to them was discovered much later, in the late Modern Period.

ABSTRACT The nature of memory and the search for its localization have been a subject of interest since Antiquity. After millennia of theoretical concepts, shifting from the heart to the brain, then from the ventricles to solid parts, the core memory-related structures finally began to be identified through modern scientifically-based methods at the diencephalic and cortical (hippocampal and neocortical) levels, mostly in the late Modern period, culminating in the current state of knowledge on the subject.

RESUMO

For identifying the pathological findings in magnetic resonance images (MRIs), normal anatomical structures in MRIs should be identified in advance. For studying the anatomical structures in MRIs, a learning tool that includes the followings is necessary. First, MRIs of the entire body; second, horizontal, coronal, and sagittal MRIs; third, segmented images corresponding to the MRIs; fourth, three dimensional (3D) images of the anatomical structures in the MRIs; fifth, software incorporating the MRIs, segmented images, and 3D images. Such a learning tool, however, is hard to obtain. Therefore, in this research, such a learning tool which helps medical students and doctors study the normal anatomical structures in MRIs was made as follows. A healthy young Korean male adult with standard body shape was selected. Six hundred thirteen MRIs of the entire body were scanned (slice thickness 3 mm, interslice gap 0 mm, field of view 480 mm x 480 mm, resolution 512 x 512, T1 weighted), and transferred to the personal computer. Sixty anatomical structures in the MRIs were segmented to make segmented images. Coronal, sagittal MRIs and coronal, sagittal segmented images were made. On the basis of the segmented images, forty-seven anatomical structures' 3D images were made by manual surface reconstruction method. Software incorporating the MRIs, segmented images, and 3D images was composed. This learning tool that includes horizontal, coronal, sagittal MRIs of the entire body, corresponding segmented images, 3D images of the anatomical structures in the MRIs, and software is expected to help medical students and doctors study the normal anatomical structures in MRIs. This learning tool will be presented worldwide through Internet or CD titles.

RESUMO

Medical students and doctors should study the appearance of normal anatomical structures in the magnetic resonance images (MRIs). For this purpose, horizontal, coronal, sagittal MRIs of a healthy entire body and corresponding segmented images were prepared. However, it is inconvenient to select interesting MRIs and segmented images; and it is difficult to understand how stereoscopic anatomical structures appear in the MRIs. Therefore, in this research, a software, on which interesting MRIs can be conveniently displayed among the horizontal, coronal, sagittal MRIs and corresponding segmented images can be displayed together, was composed. And after stacking the segmented images, three-dimensional (3D) image of each anatomical structure was manually reconstructed by surface rendering. Then another software, on which interesting 3D images of anatomical structures can be displayed and rotated, was composed too. These softwares are expected to help medical students and doctors understand normal anatomical structures in the MRIs and read pathological findings in the MRIs of patients.

RESUMO

In the present study, the wood treatability of the Amazon species Brosimum rubescens Taub., Moraceae (pau-rainha) was evaluated. The tests were carried out on three different positions of the tree stem (lower end, middle and upper end) with CCA type A at 2% concentration, using the Full-Cell process, also known as "Bethell" process. The data showed that the sapwood is moderately difficult to preserve, whereas the heartwood is refractory. The results of absorption at different positions of the tree stem did not present significant differences. There was a significant difference between sapwood and heart-wood, with the retention ranging from 7,95 to 8,84 kg/m3 for sapwood and from 0,13 to 0,27 kg/m3 for heartwood. Although the vessels are considered structures of major importance related to conduction, the fibres played a relevant role in the process of preservative distribution. The rays and the axial parenchyma, even in the sapwood, were not efficient due to extractive deposits present in these elements. These results suggest that the refractory property of the heartwood, as well as the limited permeability of the sapwood of this specie is related to the extractive contents present in the wood, and especially due to the presence of tyloses inside the vessels.

PURPOSE: To compare radiographic images of Digora system and Ektaspeed Plus film obtained from normal adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Storage phosphor plate(SPP) was placed in a film holder behind Ektaspeed Plus film package without lead foil. The effect of film on SPP was studied in a separate in vitro experiment. Forty-seven sets of images were prepared for the evaluaton. The regions of interest(ROI) for evaluation were designated at seven sites including normal anatomical structures. The image quality for each ROI was evaluated on enhanced and unenhanced storage phosphor(SP) images and Ektaspeed Plus film. RESULTS: Two film-SPP configurations showed significantly different grey levels at each step of the aluminum step wedge(p<0.05). The contrasts were comparable. Enhanced SP images were significantly superior to unenhaned images and film in all anatomical sturctures(p<0.01). The differences between unenhanced SP images and film were significant(p<0.05) except root canal and cortical bone on alveolar crest. For anatomical items, there were statistically significant difference among five observers(p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The image quality of enhanced SP images were superior to Ektaspeed Plus film, and Digora system is potentially applicable to clinical diagnosis.
